When I say blown away... Wowzers!!!! Presented by FEVER the neo-soul candle light concert in a museum of planes!!! We found out about this on facebook. Very romantic, very beautiful and intimate. A 60 minute show that you can even join along and sing. Program selection was Jill Scott, Maxwell, Sza and more. We were on the last row but when I say.... It wasn't a bad seat in the house. The view and angles for everything. The museum is open to all whom purchased tickets before and after the concert. Drinks and refreshments are served as well. They advise you to wait for photographs and videos at the end. And if you are late by any chance... they do have you wait on the side to not interrupt the artist. read more

Wonderful museum to visit if you're way, way, way out here (at least for me it's way, way out) and if you're an aviation enthusiast you will totally love it. Lots of airplanes to see and a tribute to Aztec Eagles which I love since very little is known about this small group of brave Mexican Aviators who helped the U.S. during WWII. Thank you for this acknowledgment of those forgotten heroes. We spent about two hours here including our visit to the coffee shop and souvenir shop. We love the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, so we thought we would give the Lone Star Flight Museum a try on our recent vacation to the Houston Bay Area. It reminded us a lot of the Pensacola Museum, but maybe on a smaller scale. There are 2 hangars with old planes that are always cool to see up close. Lone Star does a great job of combining history with flight and one section, the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame, did an especially great job of honoring locals who had a part in promoting and/or trailblazing in aviation. Another very interesting section was the history of flight, with a winding maze of floor-to-ceiling maps, photos, and descriptions. The Flight Academy, an interactive, hands-on section with 27 exhibits, is good for kids. They also offer rides in the planes, 20 minute in the air with a total of 45 minutes including takeoff and landing, but at $300/person, we skipped on this event. We decided the Pensacola Naval Aviation Museum is bigger and has more planes and exhibits, but Lone Star holds its own with their history, photo, and interactive exhibits. This flight museum is located on Ellington Air Force base. Our TX Air National Guard is stationed there. Free ample parking with designated bus spaces is provided. Tour groups are greeted at the entrance by friendly and knowledgeable docents. Large tour groups are divided to allow for a better tour experience in the well maintained hangar. It's perfect for families of all ages and school tours are available. Some of these war and privately owned and donated planes are operational and available for flight experience prices. There's a slight smell in the hangar which is caused from the airplane oil drip pans. I noticed a maintenance person completing airplane punch lists. The hangar is filled with many detailed placards and stanchions all around for your safety. It's a great place to visit. read more

A great museum for plane lovers and for those that enjoy and want to learn a little bit more about planes. Parking right outside of the facility and free. Kids under 3 are free! I recommend before purchasing a ticket here, look on Groupon for a deal. For 2 adults I saved $12.50. There is a Minuti coffee shop located right inside and you can access it directly outside or right through the main doors of the museum. It's right before you approach the ticket booth so a ticket isn't required to get to the coffee shop. Once you get past the ticket booth there is a simulation area to the left then two main plane galleries on both sides. If you take a right there are more information galleries and event rooms to book private parties. I would follow them on Instagram to keep up with all the special events that they have. What a find! This place is clean and well lit and has a variety of activities for adults to children. My three year old had a great time learning about what he could, watching the planes and helicopters take off, and then the different hands on activities. Very interesting museum to visit. You get to see up close what any kind of airplane, aircraft, spaceship, helicopter, and even the planes used in wars. The museum also displays and educate on how airplanes fly, what the pilot sea, and historical events with each aircraft you see. I went on a Tuesday so it wasn't crowded at all. They do have a few stimulations, but they won't working when I went. It took about an hour to see everything, definitely recommend coming here. read more

This museum is a must see....over and over again. They are EXCELLENT about changing the museum displays with regularity. The ticket prices were higher than I expected (isn't everything today?) but after going through the facilities I was happy to support it. I honestly would consider getting a membership if I lived nearby and wanted a cool place to walk during our Texas summers. I was here for a huge gala hosted by Asian Chamber of Commerce. The venue attracted almost a thousand people to the entire facility. The main event was held at Heritage Hangar. The location is relative to Ellington Airfield, which has its own attraction. I didn't get a chance to tour around the museum because I was stuck in a long line to get into the parking lot. I blame it in the design of driveway to the parking lot with lack of signage and lack of coordination to accommodate overflow. The one-and-only parking lot entrance created a chaos when cars waiting on valet, I only found out I was behind them as I walked in. After waiting in this line for 25 minutes when my car barely moved 2 car length to realize it went nowhere. So, I jumped out of the line and drove to the parking lot across the street. Hell with the rain. I was totally pissed at this point. I missed an hour of program. Being said, that means I'll be back to your around the museum during the operating hours. read more

First time here and it was a great experience. So many great things to see and do. The amount of history in one place is unbelievable. This trip was on Labor Day and free hot dogs were being barbecued outside. These hot dogs were served with chips and a drink. The stall was super friendly and very engaging. Amazing to see the "parade" of warbirds that battled to help end WWII on the 75th anniversary of VE Day. Although "The Fight to the Finish Flyover" was delayed due to weather, it was a perfect distraction from the global battle that we are currently facing on a beautiful sunny Mother's Day afternoon. Over thirty antique planes took a 120 mile hour long, FAA-approved journey that allowed Houstonians to safely view the historic aircraft socially distanced from the safety of our backyards. It was amazing to hear the roar of the engines as the planes crossed the horizon. Army, Navy and Marine historic military aviation planes included bombers like the twin-engine North American B-25/PBJ-1, the single-engine fighter North American P-51 Mustang, the single-engine Ryan L17 Navion, the B-25 bomber, also known as "The Devil Dog," the Beechcraft BE-18 that was equipped for water landings, Vultee BT-13 Valiant, T-34 Mentor and others. The single-engine North American T-6 Texan was used to train pilots of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF), United States Navy, Royal Air Force, and other air forces of the British Commonwealth during World War II. Although the museum is currently closed, check out the museum virtually. 3.5 Like others have mentioned if you're really into airplanes this place is the place for you. There are two giant wings full of WWII planes and more modern planes on the other hanger. There's a learning center for kids to learn how plans work flight simulators and some other cool facts about pilots and aviators of the past. There's even a display for female pilots and the Wasps from the wars. Unfortunately, if you're not super into airplanes you probably will get done with this Museum in less than 40 minutes switch for the price could be a little iffy but otherwise, if you love playing this place is for you. I had the pleasure to attend a Fever Candlelight event for Valentine's Day and it was the perfect venue for me. I loved this museum so much. I am a fan of aviation and like learning more about the history of aviation. Seeing different types of aircrafts (from warbirds, dive-bombers to fighter jets, and much more) from decades ago was fascinating. The hangar is also currently hosting three artifacts from NASA. This is a really beautiful, clean, friendly and informative facility. Every single staff member we encountered was so kind and seemed happy to be at work. The new Toddler Terminal was perfect for my 1.5 year old and there was plenty to do throughout the museum to keep him entertained. Met the CEO who was so kind and even showed my son the inside of a helicopter. Could not recommend this place enough! We went at 11:00am on a Saturday and beat the crowd, which seemed to start pouring in around 1:30pm. Minuti coffee cafe on-site, which was delicious. Really cool place! read more

This museum is an absolute gem. Located in Ellington Field just outside of Houston, it in no way compares to the great flight museums like the Udvar-Hazy in Northern Virginia or the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in DC. They are the world's leading flight museums. But it also does not aspire to do so. Instead, it provides ample examples of extremely important aircraft but amazingly all of them have oil pans under them - meaning they are not museum pieces but are actually each of them flight-worthy. This is the real deal, even if in highly curated form. The docents are not drones, hired to warn you against touching anything, but are in fact informed experts eager to share their passion and experience with you every step of the way. If they see you staring at an exhibit, they will engage you with additional information and share their own experiences. It is interactive not in a dead-eyed digital way, but in a most human way. After a short and very interesting talk on the Vought F4U Corsair, our son explained to the docent that he was an upper-classman Aggie in aerospace engineering and wondered whether he might be allowed to have a closer look behind the chains at the legendary tail-gunner position at the back of the spectacular Grumman TBF Avenger plane next door to the Corsair. After gaining permission from those in charge, the docent welcomed him behind the chain to take some photos of a part of history that had always fascinated him but that he had never seen up close. That is the difference between decent, intelligent museum management and the horrors of bureaucratic empty-headed rules. This is partly helped by the fact that unlike the Smithsonians, the Lone Star is not cheap to get into. In fact for a family of five it was upward of seventy bucks. But you get what you pay for. In this case it was a not overcrowded museum with informed and friendly docents and extremely intelligent displays not affected by the current over-politicized zeitgeist. You will learn something at the Lone Star Flight Museum and you will have fun doing so. All three of our kids, oldest to youngest, loved the paper airplane making station, complete with very helpful guidance. And, again, the docents took an interest in their endeavors and added their own advice and suggestions. Our son pointed out that the display on flight proceeded exactly according to his experience as an aerospace student. Semester by semester. It was intelligent and informative. Not sappy and dumbed-down. The history was presented in an objective manner, without the jingoism that often infests museology these days. This technology could save but could also destroy. If you are interested in flight and flight history and especially if you have children, do not miss this wonderful Houston gem. They really do deserve your patronage... read more

This is a very nice aviation museum. This was my first visit and it was for a friends wedding. They had the whole facility open for the guest. They staff are friendly and very knowledgeable of the different aircraft. They have interactive exhibits that will allow you fly a sim and various other things. These weren't open but they definitely look like a non pilot could have fun. From what I could tell they have some that are motion sims which oven done but another visit would be in order. They have a gift shop to get those flying souvenirs. I was able to go through there and they have some very nice aviation related items. I was able to go through 2 hangers and view a lot of different aircraft from prop planes to jets. They have some military war birds and helicopters. I have dreamed about planning a Top Gun themed party for a long time and with Top Gun 2 Movie coming out this month I thought what better time! Aimee Waltrip the event manager for Lone Star Flight Museum was AMAZING to work with on our Top Gun Themed Birthday Event. We were able to have all our guests dress up in Top Gun costumes, tour the vintage airplane museum and have dinner inside the Waltrip Hangar! This was definitely one of the most memorable birthday celebrations ever and we really want to thank Aimee again for such an amazing night and help setting up this wonderful themed event. The Lone Star Flight Museum is a must-see for any and all history and aviation enthusiasts. Children included! While it's a bit of a drive from the north side of town, it was well worth the trip. Quite a variety of airplanes and helicopters that are in pristine condition. In fact, all but 3 of the ones on display are actually working and active! Lots of facts and pictures about the beginning of flight and its evolution through time up to the present. Fascinating. Check their website for times and ticket prices. We lucked out since we went on the Monday during Spring Break and paid a $5 entry fee for each of us. A deal! And, it was "mechanics Monday," so we were given the opportunity to go into the mechanic shop and receive multiple demonstrations on airplane engine maintenance and construction. Staff is very knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. Since you can get pretty up close and personal to all of the aircraft on display (as well as having a hands-on interactive section), we all had a great time. A great experience. read more

Wow! What a nice experience. I consider this to be a must see when visiting the greater Houston area. For those that live here, you need to come. I arrived planning to stay for about an hour and a half tops. I wound up staying 3 1/2 hours on last Saturday afternoon. Parking is easy with its own dedicated and free lot in front of the beautiful exterior of this museum. Walking into the large foyer is the admission desk with the nice gift shop on one side and a Mooney airplane in its own glass enclosed room on the other. At the admission desk check in was easy. Buy your tickets online and save $2 off of each ticket. My adult ticket online was $12.95. Seniors and kids are less. Beside the admission desk is a large room with several paintings of aviation milestones that I found interesting. From there you can enter into either of the two medium sized air conditioned hangars to view the aircraft on display. The aircraft in both hangars are in pristine condition and many of them are also flyable. You can identify the flyable propeller driven aircraft by the oil drip pans on the floor beneath the engines. While I was there, one of the aircraft was out of the hangar being flown that day. You could even go outside and observe it on the ramp as it departed and returned. Planes of special interest to me where a B-17, B-25, Beechcraft Staggerwing, DC-3, P-47, F-4, SBD, F6F, TA-4, A-1 and a TBM. If those designations don't mean anything to you don't worry as you will still enjoying viewing them. I was impressed with the appearance of all of their aircraft. Also in each hangar are wallboards on the hangar sides to read about many interesting facts about aviation and in particular WW II. You can also go up to the second floor and overlook one of the hangars to give a different perspective. After leaving the hangars I found other rooms in the museum that have fun filled scientific hands on demonstrations of aviation principles that both kids and adults will learn from. They even have a section that teaches you how to make paper airplanes (they provide the paper) and then you can go up to the second floor overlook of the foyer and test fly them. Other rooms have interesting floor to ceiling wallboards showing facts about aviation history and in particular the contribution that Texas has made and still is making. On weekends only, they open up a room off of the foyer that has flight simulators for you to practice your flying skills. The simulators have two seats in each one for the pilot (you) and an observer (guest). On Saturdays each 10-15 minute flight is $5 and on Sundays it's FREE. During the week the simulators are not open to the public and only used for the numerous school visits that occur during the year. I enjoyed my flight time and managed several takeoffs and landings without any mishaps. I recommend doing this even if you have to pay the $5 like I did. Finally, the gift shop is nice and large enough to provide all of your souvenir needs. I have to give 5 stars to this museum. It's very affordable, appeals to all age groups, educational, interactive and it's brand spanking new. read more
