We actually got to the restaurant about 1/2-hour earlier for our reservation but without hesitation, Harris seated us promptly. Btw, Harris is like the Front of the house & main server at the same time and is quite the character! Although we knew that ordering the Chef's Rice-table was going to be too much food for both of us, we decide to just order it because it had a 2-person minimum requirement to order. We could believe how many customers walked past our table & wondered where they were going. Well, it turns out that they have another large dining area I the back! The restaurant does make you feel that you are in Indonesia because to the wall art ' even the entrance to their restrooms (lol!). THE BLACK AND WHITE: We ordered the 2 person menu to go for Rijsttafel aka "rice table", which is distinctly Dutch apparently. I liken it to Indonesian tapas. We had 9 different meats that had individual spices and slow cooked, braised proteins. The meats ranged from beef, lamb and chicken with a few veggie dishes. There was a big rice container in the middle with roasted coconut and peanuts as toppers. Add that with the option to taste test all the little dishes made for a nice flavor bomb and change up between all the regular dutch style cuisine. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall the takeout was 45 euros for 9 small dishes. Highly recommend to try Rijsttafel while you're in Amsterdam and this is the place. read more

Food and Drinks: Really enjoyed most of the items: - Ice tea (with lemon grass, honey, mint) - balanced but more sour than sweet though - Bali Sunrise - refreshing drink according to my mom. - Sambal Goreng Udang Peteh (king shrimp with bean sauce) - this dish was flavorful but not a standout - Sateh Kambing (goat in thick sweet glaze topped with chooped peanuts, sliced , and pepper slices) - I found this dish to have very tender chunks of goat and reasonable portions of meat, but the marinade was a tad too sweet for my liking - Pepesan Ikan Bali - spiced fish steamed in a banana leaf - this was my favorite dish by far - the spice rub used paired well and the fish itself was tender. This dish was on the spicier side as we had wanted. Service: service was friendly and my mom and i did get seated without issue even without a reservation. It was reasonable fast to get the starters which included a peanut sauce and puffed chips. However, it took close to 30-40 minutes to receive our entrees. The tables next to us also had major delays and some incorrect orders were brought to a neighboring table. It was not particularly crowded so I'm not sure why service was so slow. I would recommend stopping in if you are not in a rush and it is a weeknight, particularly without a reservation. I think rice tables took even longer and were priced much higher so I'm not sure they would even be worth it. I can't speak to authenticity but there were not a lot of local folks in this establishment. Lots of business folks and tourists. I had never tried this place before but had heard good things, and the concierge at the Marriott recommended it. I ordered the rice table,(rijsttafel) which started with an amazing chicken soup, and I also had Jasmine tea, which was delicious. The ambiance is nice and feels traditional, with warm lighting and elegant wooden furniture that adds to the cozy atmosphere. The decor features beautiful Indonesian artwork and intricate carvings, creating an inviting and culturally rich environment. The service was good; they let me order the rice table even though I was dining alone. The second course included eight small dishes with goat, beef, chicken, and vegetables. Came here for dinner, along with a friend, during my last night in Amsterdam, a couple of weeks ago. We were lucky to have just missed the dinner rush as we were seated quickly. We opted for their vegetarian rijsttafel dinner, which came with 8 different dishes, which includes things like tofu skewers, gado gado salad, stewed veggies in coconut curry, tempeh, etc., and 3 condiments/toppings. My friend had never had Indonesian food, so she was amazed by the array of foods here. I particularly liked their spicy eggplant and tofu skewers, though I thought that the stewed veggies in coconut curry could've been a bit more flavorful somehow. Towards the end of the meal, it got pretty busy and our poor server was running around the restaurant, trying to serve multiple people at once, so it took a while before we could get our bill settled, but overall, we had a lovely meal here. The rijsttafel itself came out to 29 Euros a person, which I thought wasn't a bad deal, considering how many different dishes we tried out. Certainly try to come by here for an Indonesian rijsttafel meal if you happen to be in Amsterdam! read more

I came here for dinner and was seated right away despite not having a reservation. They were super busy on this Thursday night so I was happy get a seat quick and a menu. The service was alright. The girl who served us was new. Like new new. She didn't know the names of the dishes. And they guy who had to assist her, definitely rushed things because, well it wasn't his job to serve our table. So I barely got the names of all the dishes. I do know we had chicken, beef and lamb The dishes - I enjoyed them but my favorite were the veggie dishes. The chicken satay in peanut sauce was good but all the meats were dry, which was pretty odd given they were super tender and soaked in oils/ sauces. As many others, went here because it's highly recommended. A friend visiting wanted "authentic" Indonesian food (which this is not) so she picked this place. Immediately after walking in and waiting 4-5 minutes to be seated (with reservations), I grew concerned. It was full and they put us in the back room with the coats, but it was okay. Servers were running around like people on the floor of the stock exchange. Yeah, it was busy, but seemed like a lot of drama. Took us a while to get our order for wine, but that was only thanks to the manager popping back there to see us being ignored. The wine was warm, we suffered through the first bottle, but when ordered another, they said "this is the best they can do". They didn't offer to have us taste it first, just poured it and said "enjoy". If you're going to mark up wine 100% - 200%, at least pretend it's going to be good. They obviously don't refrigerate their wine, not sure why, they have a huge wine chiller there - turned off. Once we sent the second wine bottle back (un-opened) the server was not very happy, very defensive. The food took forever. We arrived at 7:30 but left at 11:00 pm. Thankfully we only ordered the small rice table without desert and soup. The main courses taste like bad fast food, from a big pot or buffet type batch poured onto little bowls, but even that takes 90 minutes. You're better off going to a toco nearby. We made the mistake of ordering additional starters. That set our main course back at least an hour. Tables arrived and departed by the time we got our main food for four....by then I wasn't really hungry. Rice was good, but the rest was mushy meat, very similar to each other and a tiny little bowl of cold vegetables. After several hours, we were finally ready to go, not offering any compensation or apologies for warm wine, long delays or forgetting our introductory prawn crackers, they stand above you with the pinnen to pay your bill expecting a large tip. Keep in mind, in The Netherlands, a tip is not expected at normal places - of course appreciated if earned. If you see my other reviews, I am always very generous with the ratings, I understand how difficult it is to run a restaurant with limited staff and so many tourists, but with that in mind, if you don't have the personal to keep up with your tables, then limit the number of tables available. I'll be honest that this was my first experience having Indonesian food or the traditional rijst table experience, so I can't comment on its authenticity. However, we knew we wanted to have a rijst table while we were in Amsterdam, and this place seemed to have good reviews and was near our hotel. The food was absolutely incredible and unlike anything I've ever had before as an experience. It was truly extravagant and a ton of incredibly flavorful food. I'm glad that I had done some research on this type of cuisine beforehand though, because this wasn't set up for beginners - you kind of had to know what you were doing or be good at guessing. We had a few different waiters come to our table and they were all so friendly and nice to chat with. The food was absolutely delicious though I'm not entirely sure what we had - regardless, it was amazing and I'm so glad we were able to have this unique experience while we were in Amsterdam. read more

The concierge at the Pulitzer Amsterdam highly recommended Long Pura so we decided to try this seeming store-front restaurant that is decorated in black fabric wallpaper and native textiles. When we arrived, it was very busy and seemed full, but appearances were deceiving as the restaurant has a lot of space and there was a table for us even though we didn't have a reservation. Our server, Valentino, in native dress could not have been more helpful and efficient, even though he was being rushed off his feet. We ordered the three-course rice table, which comes with saffron rice and a variety of little vegetable, egg, beef, lamb and chicken dishes, along with toppings to sweeten or spice each dish. Each dish was exquisitely flavored. My impression before this meal was that Indonesian food could be overly sweet and sauces, but this meal demonstrated I hadn't eaten in the right places. My favorite dish was the lamb with coriander, lemongrass and coconut milk, although the spicy egg was a strong second. The dessert was a crepe filled with toasted coconut accompanied by a generous dollop of rich mango ice cream and sweet cream, along with a skewer of fresh fruit. It was delicious, but I couldn't finish it. I highly recommend Long Pura. read more

The waitstaff were generally kind but even though we had also made a reservation, we waited more than an hour for our standard Rijsttafel, after we ourselves had to ask about it. We learned to expect slower service in Amsterdam but it was never this bad. We weren't served water or checked-up on during this time, we were not offered compensation, and our primary waiter did not even know we had finished our dessert when we asked for our check at the end of the night. For reference, we visited on a Tuesday night at 6:15PM. The restaurant had steady business and a large tour group also had a reservation at about 7PM but we could have been served prior to their arrival and it seems like other reviewers had similar experiences to ours. read more

A first for us, having an Indonesian rice table. I would say we liked it - we didn't love it. The server was fun and energetic, just not always where you needed him to be. All the food was in heavy sauces, and they were tasty, but some of the items tasted the same/similar and were not distinguishable from one another. Amsterdam is sort of known for its large population of Indonesian people and Indonesian restaurants and this place was recommended by the hotel staff and since I never had Indonesian food, I rolled the dice and went for it. The restaurant ambiance is classy and to no surprise it was packed but the hostess was nice enough to get me seated. So you sit down, and they place these heating trays in front of you, and you wonder: are they setting up the buffet right in front of you? THE ANSWER food plates and bowls emerge from the kitchen, onto your table and on your tray, so your food is always stay warm while you are eating your food. I ordered the Sayur Ludeh (mixture of Vegetables) , Sate Ayam (Chicken in Coconut sauce), and Ayam Opor (Chicken tight) and Indonesian rice. The saucing on each meal is heavy and I would say that each dish tasted very rich; sort of top heavy on oil but the taste was good and different. The liquor was Moscow Mule which was actually was very nice alcoholic drink. I am glad that I tried the Indonesian food but I don't think that I can eat Indonesian food on a weekly or monthly basis. It certainly falls on a heavy meal but it is spicey, flavorful and rich in spices. Indonesian food is something that you ought to try if you are in Amsterdam. read more

Disappointing experience considering all the high reviews. Food: Tasty but lacking in flavor for majority of dishes. Small portions for each dish but you get a variety as we ordered the sampler with around 12 different dishes. Cost: High ($60 USD ish person), considering amount of food (compared to US or UK) but average compared to other Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam. Water costs roughly the same as beer FYI, @ 6 EUR. Total bill for 5 of us was $280 USD ! I was very unhappy that the bill included a charge of 1 EUR for a take away box and 1 EUR for a take out bag ! The take away box was a cheap, plastic box and the bag was a regular paper bag. We felt insulted after spending almost $300 USD on the meal. Service: Slow at times. Had to ask for ice and drinks multiple times. Waiter (male) was very rushed and spoke very fast so we could barely take in the information, he had many tables to tend to but still, the restaurant should hire more waiters. We felt like a bother to him asking him our questions. When he gave me the bill he asked me in front of everyone at the table if I wanted to add a tip which felt very awkward. I declined as I felt the service was average to poor. FYI, in Amsterdam you are not expected to tip at restaurants usually so I was puzzled that he asked. Did you know that Indonesia was once a Dutch colony? Because of this Indonesian cuisine entered Dutch culture. To showcase the variety of cuisines all over Indonesia while at the same time impress guests with the exotic abundance of their colony, the concept of rijsttafel ("rice table") was born. Due to its origins in colonialism rijsttafel is hardly ever served anywhere even in Indonesia - nowadays you can only find this type of cuisine in upscale restaurants in the Netherlands. Having said this rijsttafel is a wonderful way for people to try Indonesian food for people who have never had Indonesian cuisine before, plus it gives a welcome break from the blandness of regional cuisine of the Benelux (you can only eat mussels, fries and pancakes so often before craving something different). Since San Diego doesn't have any Indonesian restaurants this was my introduction to Indonesian cuisine. Being familiar with Southeast Asian cuisine my first impressions are that the tastes and textures are a hybrid of Thai and Filipino cuisine. The representative dishes are served tapas-style on top of a hot plate, accompanied by a heaping bowl of rice and toppings. Most dishes are certainly made for European tastes as the spice level both in heat and flavor are considered mild (save for rendang and the spicy chicken). Starter: Soto Ayam (freshly made Javanese chicken soup). Reminds me of the Filipino sotanghon soup with the addition of an egg and lemon. Rijsttafel (3 courses, €37.50/person, 2 person minimum) - Rendang padang (beef in spicy coconut sauce). Rendang is beef simmered in a stew with the broth thicker than in a curry. Be careful of the spice here as it can creep up on you. - Gule kambing (lamb prepared in a spiced coconut sauce). Note that the lamb here is more gamey than leg of lamb or lamb hot pot. - Sate ayam (grilled chicken satay served with peanut sauce). Chicken satay is the most Western-friendly dish of Indonesian cuisine. - Sayur lodeh (warm vegetables in coconut sauce). - Terik daging (lightly sweetened beef stewed in Javanese sauce). - Ayam kalio (medium spicy chicken in coconut milk sauce). - Sambal goreng telor (egg in spicy chicken sauce). - Gado gado (cold mixed vegetables with gado gado sauce). Gado gado is akin to a peanut sauce. (Note that the entrees in the rijsttafel contain the 5 iconic Indonesian dishes: rendang, soto ayam, sate [satay], vegetables in gado-gado sauce and nasi goreng). Sides - Acar campur (pickled vegetables) - Serundeng (roasted coconut with peanuts) - Sambal goreng tempeh (soybeans in sweet-chili sauce) Dessert: Kue dadar gulung (Crepe stuffed with Javanese sugar and grated coconut). I don't normally like the texture of coconut but here it's grated so fine that the texture doesn't bother me. The green color comes from pandan leaves. My family had fun comparing and contrasting each dish to a similar Filipino or Thai equivalent. Truth be told we welcomed more flavorful dishes as we were getting tired of Belgian stews and mussels and fries. Tried Indonesian cuisine for the first time tonight. It was so delicious, many wonderful flavors! We had the ricetable for 2 but added extra for 4 people and it was the perfect amount. What made it most enjoyable was Danny, our server. He was SO fun and friendly and really helped us make our selections. We ordered Chef's Ricetabel for two and we are stuffed. It comes with 9 small main dishes and 4 side dishes and 4 satay appetizer which is so divine, plus you still have dessert. It's well worth the money. It's not even that expensive for what you get so I am not sure why some reviewers say you get too little for what you pay, I think it's well worth its value. We also received great service from 3 different waiters. The restaurant is beautiful and it feels more of a fine dining experience than a casual one. Don't recommend. Food is nice, if they ever serve you. But don't waste your time or money there. My hotel (Pulitzer) concierge recommended it and got us a reservation for 4 ppl at 6:30 pm. Arrived and were seated quickly. Only 2 other full tables in the restaurant. We ordered drinks and appetizers and meals (2 of us sharing the Chef's rice table (highly recommended by our concierge - a traditional combo of lots of small plates of their best dishes). Appetizers were delicious - 4 different satays to share (chicken, fish, goat, and shrimp). Nice cocktail menu - tried a gin & tonic with orange and clove - very tasty! But that's all we got. More people arrived. The two tables who were there had finished and left. Restaurant completely filled up over the next hour. Service was already slow but then it just stopped, for us at least. Other tables got their appetizers. Then some started getting their entrees and rice tables. Still no more food for us. At the hour mark (an hour AFTER finishing our appetizers) we still didn't have entrees. Other tables did. I watched more of the rice table dishes come out to be served. We kept thinking the next should be ours, since the other tables arrived after us. Nope - every time they served another table. Finally we gave up and told them to bring us the bill for the appetizers and drinks we had. They didn't even say sorry. We left hungry and disappointed. Do not recommend. read more

I don't usually miss an opportunity to eat Indonesian food when I am in NL, though, given that this is in the heart of the Jordaan, I should have expected to pay what I did. One of the traditional ways to dine is called "rice table" in which you are brought rice (of course) and 8-10 tapas-sized dishes...but they aren't tapas. They are just much smaller portions of regular dishes, like ayam kalio or sambal goreng telor, and of course, gado gado. You're also served accompaniments like acar campur and serundeng for garnishing as needed. If you still have room (my French-trained stomach held back) there is some delicious dessert waiting for you as well. Pricey, but the atmosphere, service, and food, is well worth it. read more

We got here forty five minutes before closing time and I was sweating after a forty minute walk, because I'm out of shape. We could only order one type of Rijsttafel at this late hour. So they started putting out their dishes starting with "Krupuk"(prawn crackers) followed in a few minutes by 6 small dishes, a bowl of white rice topped with fried garlic. Even though each one had its own flavor, there was this baseline common taste among them, that it was difficult to differentiate one from the other. Nothing stood out, is what I'm saying. They were all pretty decent. Beef Rendang had ginger in it. Unusual but it worked. I was curious to experience Indonesian cuisine while in here, since I didn't realize til recently that the Dutch had heavily influenced Indonesia and I guess, vice versa.
