On our third full day in Amsterdam, we were walking around, looking for somewhere to have lunch. It was still fairly early in the day, around 11am, so not many places were open. We walked down a random, quiet street, and stumbled across Warung Spang Makandra, which had just opened for the day. Because it had just opened, it wasn't busy, although it became much busier as we were dining. Warung Spang Makandra is a family owned Surinamese restaurant that opened in 1978. Surinamese food is similar to Indonesian food, and it was delicious! I had the "Spang Makandra Special" [fried rice & noodles, chicken fillet, chicken, satay, long beans, egg, potato sambal and perkedel (fried potato)]. Not only was the food delicious, but the portions were huge (I struggled to finish it), and the prices were very reasonable -- nothing was over €18. Delicious food, great value, and excellent service -- if I am ever in Amsterdam again (I really hope so!), I am definitely going back to Warung Spang Makandra! I highly recommend this restaurant. we came here on a whim for dinner at 9pm, an hour before the place closed. there were several wait staff members working the place and it was maybe about 70% full, yet it took us several minutes before we were provided with a menu after we were seated. however, the food came relatively quick and was pretty good. we ordered the nasi rames, and the portion size was pretty generous and the food was very flavorful. the amount of meat given was also very adequate. when we asked for the bill, we again had to wait several minutes while the staff went about the only half full restaurant and didn't pay attention to us, which was frustrating. finally we were able to flag someone down and were told that we actually should pay at the counter, which we should've been told in the first place. it again took a few more minutes of waiting before someone helped us pay out our bill. the ambiance of this restaurant was really nice and would make for a great first date spot, and the food was pretty good. but our experience with the service at this restaurant was very subpar and honestly a bit frustrating at times. i'm really not the type of person to rag about service being subpar but in this case i was pretty unhappy with it because we felt like we were literally being ignored by the wait staff most of the time.

Warung Spang Makandra offers a delightful experience for those craving authentic Surinamese and Indonesian cuisine. We recently visited and ordered the lamb roti, chicken soup, and Nasi Rames, all of which were incredibly tasty. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, with friendly staff. Prices are reasonable. It can be crowded so be prepared for a wait or make a reservation in advance.

This restaurant was a bit out of the way from sightseeing in the city, but it was worth the trek! Btw - google maps works great with the unlimited GVB pass tram/metro pass. Hubby and I shared the Spang special and also the chicken satay special. Both comes with green beans and veggies. I'm so glad I'm not allergic to nuts because the peanut sauce are delicious and they do not skim it at all. It was our 1st time trying Surinamese food and it definitely reminds us a bit Indonesian cuisine as well. I think the main difference is the noodles that is is softer vs stir fry. So glad we had this meal while in Amsterdam! Good service and great music throughout our meal. Makes you happy to eat here!

Service was outstanding. The food was outstanding. It was a nice size place to seat our party of 6. The food was so good that I found the spices used to make the chicken so I could recreate it at home. I highly recommend this restaurant. Everything was delicious!

Worth the half mile walk from the Van Gogh Museum. We were looking for Indonesia food to enjoy while visiting Amsterdam. We ended up in. Surinamese restaurant. It turns out both Indonesia and Suriname were former Dutch Colonies. We ordered from the Chef's specials first what looked good. We ended up ordering Surinamese food. The Chicken preparations including the Satay Chicken Skewer and Chicken Stew were incredibly delicious! The Chicken was moist and flavorful. The sauces were excellent. Service was fast, friendly and efficient.

I was very excited to try this place. The line was out the door, but luckily we made a reservation. We were seated, but then moved (along with another table) to someplace else to accommodate for a larger party. The server did let us know that the wait to get our food would be 45 minutes. I didn't mind that so much, but it took 50 minutes to even place our order. The server seemed distracted and would always go see what another table needed when we were trying to order. He mentioned that they were missing a lot of things from the menu because they were running out of food, but didn't specify which items. I thought we were pretty patient, but I was annoyed when I saw him starting to take another party's order (that arrived 40 minutes after us and was a party of 15+), so I went up to the server. He did take our order, but told us that drinks and the chicken satay appetizer were not available. My friend was able to get the drink at the end. I ordered the Spang Makandra Special, and my friend ordered the Vegetarian Spang Makandra Special. Mine was delicious (and included a chicken satay). Really great flavors. Loved the rice and noodles. Not spicy at all. My friend's tempeh was chewy, and I couldn't taste the flavors as well as in my dish. Her vegetarian dish was also more spicy. We unknowingly went on Keti Koti (Emancipation Day in Suriname), so I'm sure that contributed to it. I talked to some kind locals during my wait, and they said the wait was pretty typical. If you can look past the service and make a reservation in advance, I would recommend. Great vibe and music as well. Tip: ask for an English menu. Sauces on the table from least to most spicy: red, brown, yellow.

If you're reading this, go here. This place is incredible. The food is amazing- we had the spang special and it was the best I've ever tried. The peanut sauce was definitely the best I've ever had. The interior and music were great (I have never been impressed by the music in a restaurant before). This is a must try

My friend recommended this spot to me and it was well worth the visit! Food was amazing!! I ordered the Nasi Rames which has a mix of chicken satay and beef. The chicken satay skewer is 10/10 so flavorful. Chicken is tender and juicy that melts in my mouth! Not to mention they have superb service! Highly recommend this place to everyone in A'dam.

Overall: 5 stars…read more When I searched where I could partake on the Indonesian Rice Table feast in Amsterdam, Sampurna came up with their intriguing Satay Solo course that has a small plates of everything. I love the concept because it offers so much insight into the cuisine without having to consume in such large volumes. That said, this "solo" rice table was still food that was more than 2 meals worth for me, but much better than 12 meals worth. Love the food and the flavors, and was impressed by how well everything was cooked and balanced each other. [ PART I ] Chicken Skewers - Classic chicken satay with peanut sauce that is tender and works well with that sweet and savory profile. Beef Skewers - Love these beef skewers that have a strong meatiness to the bite. Goat Skewers - Very intriguing, not too gamey meat with a relatively sweet profile that works. Nasi Goreng - Well flavored fried rice that stands on its own but tastes even better with the rice plate. Bami Goreng - Deliciously decadent noodles powered by the bacon. Daging Smoor - I love the flavor profile of this sweet braised beef; its tender, its strong in flavor, and goes so well on top of the bed of rice. [ PART II ] Jagung Kacang Panjang - light clean dish with delicious vegetables; great balance to the menu. Salat Manga - Flavorful and refreshing mango salad in a peanut dressing that has sweet and nutty profile; this dish is bold in flavor but also provides some relief to the other heavier flavors on the menu. Sambal Goreng Telor - The sambal gives such a bold flavor to moisten and flavor the boiled egg; this would taste even better if the egg were soft boiled. Acar Ketimun - Much needed component of the rice table that provides acidity and freshness to contrast all the bold flavors of the menu. Serundeng - Toasted coconut and peanut topping I sprinkled onto the noodles; adds a tropical twist to the dish. Emping - Nutcrackers that are even more crisp than the shrimp crackers. Gives a density and sharp textural component. Food: +1 Presentation: E Price: +1 Atmosphere: E Service: E Menu: +2 Insta/Yelp/Beli: @amei_eats Insta/TikTok: @ameizing.race

I don't have Indonesian food where I live, so was excited to try this in Amsterdam. I thought the dishes were all flavorful and gave a good mix of meat, vegetable, and rice dishes. The individual servings were small, but filling enough because of the heavy coconut milk used in most dishes. 1 star off: The attitude of the waitstaff was abysmal. First of all, their website does not offer reservations and they rarely answer their phones. So my family and I arrived at restaurant opening to get a table. The first thing they said to us was "Do you have a reservation? If you don't, I can only give you a table if you get out by 6:30PM." in a stern way. We said okay. The group that came after me also raised the issue that no one at the restaurant answers their phone for reservations. The waitstaff did not respond to that, but begrudging seated them. 1 star off: While we were ordering food, the waitstaff noticed that my son had a water bottle with him, and proceeded to give him a lecture that water bottles are not allowed and that we have to order water from them. He is a teenager...he does not know he was supposed to conceal his water bottle at this restaurant. We all ordered drinks, including water, but the experience left my family feeling unwelcomed.

Definitely make a reservation as the narrow restaurant has limited seating. They turned away several parties on an early Thursday evening around 7 PM. A rijsttafel is an elaborate Indonesian meal that was adapted by the Dutch who colonized Indonesia. It consists of many, many side dishes served in small portions that are accompanied by rice prepared in several different ways. Although the dishes served are undoubtedly Indonesian, the rijsttafel's origins were colonial. The Dutch introduced the rice table to impress visitors with the exotic abundance of their colony while showcasing foods from different regions. Rijsttafels strive to feature an array of flavors, colors, degrees of spiciness and textures. The dishes may be crispy, crunchy, chewy, soft, hard or velvety. Such a beautiful display. A feast for the eyes as well as the palate. Ordered both the large and small Tujuh Maret's rice table. The larger rijsttafel includes all the specialties of the chef, composed of 18 different dishes. The smaller rice table can be ordered as mild-medium or medium spicy including chicken and tofu satay, yellow rice, jasmine rice, sweet and sour salads and prawn or rice crackers. Chicken dishes included (from least to most spicy): Ajam Opor-Chicken in a mild sauce of coconut and kurkuma. Ajam Roedjak-Chicken in a spicy sauce of red peppers and coconut. Ajam Rica Rica-Chicken in a spicy sauce of assorted peppers. Beef dishes included (from least to most spicy): Daging Smoor-Beef in a mild soy sauce and nutmeg Daging Rendang-Beef in a spicy sauce of various peppers and coconut Daging Belado-Beef in a spicy sauce of red peppers and tomatoes. Satay dishes included: Sate Ajam- Chicken satay with peanut sauce. Sate Tahu- Tofu satay with peanut sauce. Side dishes included: Gado Gado-Mixed vegetables with peanut butter sauce. Sambal Goreng Telor-Boiled egg with spicy sauce. Atjar Kuning Menado-Sweet and sour salad. Krupuk-Prawn crackers. Emping-Vegetarian crackers. Seroendeng-Grated coconut with peanuts. Nasi Putih-Steamed Jasmine rice. Nasi Kuning-Yellow rice with coconut and lemongrass. Although everything was delicious, it was definitely hard to remember what was what, even after our hostess was graciously described each of the 30 dishes that were on our rice tables. Labels would have helped. Finished with a Pandan crepe filled with coconut. A beautiful way to end a really nice evening in Amsterdam.

When you walk in your greeted by a yummy smell of spices. It's definitely a family business. Tiny euro style restaurant. Food - we ordered the Rice table for 2. And bring your stomach space, because it's alot of food. We came hungry and still had leftovers. It's a progressive meal, from mild to spicy dishes. But I believe you can chose your level of spice with the server. 18 dishes come out all at once. Consisting of fish, chicken, beef, veg etc dishes plus rice. All with unique flavor and textures. Would highly suggest it if in the area. Even if it's not in your wheelhouse foodwise, still an interesting experience.

Every table was filled and were seated all pretty close to eachother, which added to the level of noise and feeling of a super busy evening. We ordered the tasting menu and the first course was an AMAZING start- probably the best Indonesian dish I've had outside of Indonesia. The main course is where we had more issues - for having 9 different small plates to try, the amount of rice for 4 people was definitely not enough. Some of my friends in the group were also more sensitive to spice, so it would've been nice if there was more consideration to ordering the dishes by spice level or at a minimum letting us know which plates were more spicy. And while there were many to try, most of these dishes were just okay, nothing really stood out. The dessert course was a much larger plate/portion than any of us were expecting, which was a pleasant surprise but the flavors were also just okay to me.
