I haven't had my haircut here, though one of my good friends who is a Southwick regular swears by Norman's and says that even though it's called 'Dodgy Norm's' the haircut is in fact not at all dodgy and is if anything regular and reliable. Cheap for men, and open till 8, so perfect if you've had a late day at work, are going to see a lady and want your barnet looking in tip-top shape.

I've never had a bad experience with them and my hairdresser Bryce is absolutely wonderful. Could not recommend him enough as he's always done an incredible job on my hair. I've attached a photo of my new purple do so you can see his amazing colour work. Before that he'd helped he get from a darker brown through to a natural looking blonde that suited my roots. Always happy and feeling great afterwards. And the chairs that you sit in while washing your hair have massages in them!

Maybe I picked a quite time to go and was somewhat fortunate, but I felt every bit as pampered (boy is it hard to sound manly when talking about haircuts) as I have done in the handful of other salons I have visited, and revisited. I'm not the chattiest of people when having my hair put at risk, and am quite satisfied to exchange meaningful words and light hearted jokes, rather than to talk aimlessly throughout the process. And from the looks of things, the fine men and women at Headmasters seemed more than happy to comply with either approach. So far as the consultation was concerned, it was easily the most practical I've had... Which was in no small part aided by me showing a picture of Spike Spiegel (from Cowboy Bebop) and asking if his gravity defying curls were physically possible. While assuring me that it would not look exactly the same, I personally felt it came as close to the fiction as reality would allow without the aid of a wig, and for that I'm bloomin' grateful. I have to say, I felt silly for making such a random request, but I was reassured incredibly quickly... It's walk appointments only so be prepared to wait, but there are plenty of chairs and mags while you wait. They are barbers rather than trained hair stylists so I wouldn't go there for a full restyle but you can get a fringe trim for £7 and full head trim for £12.

All the staff here are very polite and professional. Whilst they are cutting/washing or highlighting your hair they really do interact with you if you wish to interact with them! One girl in particular knows my life story i think, poor thing!! lol. They also offer you in date mags and drinks to keep you occupied whilst under the heater (if you are having something like your highlights done!) Having your hair washed there is also fab as they give you a free mini head massage which is just soooo relaxing! Over the years I have had hairdresser not listen and totally mess up my hair! Studio 106 are now the only hairdressers I trust with my hair! Their cuts are always great and last and so do my highlights!

Ladies who lunch still need to look good, it seems. Not a usual environment, I won a haircut at Shine in a raffle. The whole Shine experience is about relaxation. Big comfy chars, a farmhouse table loaded with newspapers and mags and a laid-back ambience make this a very genial little place. Best of all, noone is peering through the window as you're groomed. So after a relaxing head and shoulder massage, an opulent hair wash, and a cup of coffee, my stylist Charles, got down to business. What a nice guy. An Isle of White native, he actually cared more about my hair than I do and suggested all sort of clever styles and looks that would make me look fabulous. I've got to say, being no expert on such things, he did a cracking job. But let's be honest. This place is a bit of a treat. A luxury most of us can ill afford. I think my do would have cost something like £50. That's par for the course, it was a lovely experience, but regrettably out of reach for me on my everyday budget.

Can't recall my hairdresser's name but he was one of the older guys that work there. He didn't listen to my original request, I went there with my hair in a terrible condition... I wanted an interesting colour technique, instead my hair came out looking brassy and with a discernible dark bar where he'd not quite matched the root highlights to the rest of my hair. The initial cost of £140 completely stunned me, normally I wouldn't complain but at that price I expect excellence. To give the salon their due, they offered to redo my hair FoC, but unfortunately it was with the same guy, again, he didn't really listen to me and seemed to bluff his way out of the bodge-up. I left the salon still unhappy, but couldn't be bothered to take it any further. My story is too long to detail here. It's now Jan 2011 and so reluctant to go to get my roots done because in my experience of Brighton hairdressers I just can't find a fabulous colourist, it doesn't matter how little or how much I pay. PS I had to give 1 star for this review, I suppose the one star would go the the Aveda hair products they use in Shine, they certainly resstored the condition. But the salon itself is awful, no towels to wrap around your head after washing, only something that looks and feels like a dishrag. Their LED/fluorescent lighting is useless especially to judge hair colour under. I'm all for 'green' businesses... but hair salons need bright, clean and flattering lighting. PS If my profile pic is the one with pink hair..... it's a wig!!! Wish my hair looked that good lol!!!
