Based on the great reviews, we chose the Lord Nelson and were quite satisfied with our selection. The location across from the public gardens is wonderful and it's within walking distance of all the tourist sites. Service was nice and the hotel had an old world elegance that was very charming. It did show its age and the elevators were easily overwhelmed. I might try a newer hotel if we returned to Halifax but all in all we were very happy with our choice. read more

TL;DR: Nice older independent hotel that's not part of the big chains. They still have old school doormen who open doors for you and help you with your luggage. On our most recent trip to Halifax, we stayed at the Lord Nelson for 3 nights. We paid $199 a night. It's an older hotel with some retro charm. Like they have postal service to mail out letters. On each floor by the elevator there's a mail slot. You stick your letter in the mail slot and it travels down a chute into the main mailbox that I'm assuming the mailman empties periodically. I don't really know who would send snail mail these days from a hotel room, like maybe a postcard to your grandma, but I thought it was cool. The lobby also looks like it's from older times and they have doormen dressed in old fashioned doormen outfits greeting people at the door. The standard rooms are very small. We only had a Queen bed, a desk with chair, another chair, 2 side tables, a mini fridge and a TV. No microwave. We had a kettle and a Nespresso machine though. The bathroom is extra tiny. There's hardly any counter space. It's functional, but you definitely don't want to hang out there too much. We were out and about and just used the room for sleeping and showering so it suited us fine for this trip. There's no breakfast included. But they do have a restaurant attached called The Arms. We did not eat there but perused the menu and it looked rather frou-frou and pricey to me. The guest toiletries at this hotel are from Lather, a company in Pasadena California. I liked the shampoo and conditioner. The scent was bamboo and lemongrass. The location is very convenient. It's on South Park St very close to Spring Garden Rd. It's by the Public Gardens and not far from The Citadel. It's close to many restaurants and shops. I would stay there again. (147) read more

Our bellman, Harris could not have been more amazing! He was such a joy to encounter and converse with. A real gem at this property for sure! There were two weddings happening and the area was quite chaotic and Harris helped us with our bags, where and how to park and then gave us dining suggestions when he came to the room. Such a sweet man! We loved the property and its location. My wife stayed here many times 20-30 years ago. This is my first time. The only reason this place got two stars is the staff. Most are cheerful and helpful. The front desk all act like they would rather be somewhere else. Its is centrally located. But its OLD! And WAY overdue for an upgrade. One reviewer mentioned a view. We were booked in as part of a tour. Both times we had a lovely view of the concrete walls of the vacant apartment building next door! The floor is aged laminate, curling at the edges and the carpet has seen better days. The lighting fixtures are a mish mosh of mid century and Danish modern. The elevators are very old as well (Titanic salvage?) and only one goes to the parking level and then there's a route march to your car! There is a restaurant on the main floor and the food's pretty good but pricey. No breakfast included but there is a coffee maker in the room. There are many better choices just a short walk up the street. The walls are paper thin. We can hear a rather rowdy conversation and someone upstairs apparently practicing close order drills in high heels. There is only one accessible electric plug in the room and only one of the plugs work! So we have two power bars linked to plug everything in. The hotel itself is very nice, our original room was clean but our AC was broken. They moved our room and the bathroom was dirty. The tub barely drained and was filled with hair which I had to wipe down with a washcloth, and the air filter looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. My biggest discrepancy is that there was no valet parking or accessible parking. The parking lot is shared with the mall so it made extremely confusing. We parked on the very lowest level which had no working elevator. We had to take the stairs which was incredibly risky since I am disabled and nearly passed out. If you are able-bodied, I think this hotel is fine. It was relatively clean and the people at the front desk were very helpful. If you are disabled or have a chronic illness, avoid. Extremely inaccessible. read more

As a lover of historic hotels, I was really excited to stay at the Lord Nelson for our last night in Nova Scotia. I will give them props for checking us in early, but the location of our room was less than optimal as it looked straight out to the air conditioning/industrial machinery on the 3rd floor inner courtyard. I spent a little extra for a middle-of-the-road renovated room. The room itself was nice. Clean, large, bright and a comfortable King bed. Large bathroom but no tub (boo). I liked trying out the Nespresso machine (newer model, I have the older one). Pubic areas were very nice but they don't allow you to bring your drinks from the pub to the comfortable lobby seating area. The free internet service was terrible. I had to continually reconnect and when it did work, it took forever to load anything. The Lord Nelson is an Expedia VIP property, but I was not offered any upgrades or perks. Otherwise, the Lord Nelson is in a good location with plenty to eat and see nearby. I guess I was just hoping for a little something more. read more

Horrific customer service. I booked this hotel on Hotels.com and made a mistake. I was going to travel with a friend and we wanted to pay for the hotel when we checked out. I inadvertently selected the box that said, pay at time of reservation. Pay at time of reservation would not allow for cancelation. Within minutes, when I realized my mistake, I immediately contacted the hotel and asked them to cancel the reservation so that I could book it to pay at the time of check out even though that rate was a bit higher. They refused to cancel it ... or they said if they canceled I would still be charged for the room! I explained that I had made the reservation minutes before and that it was a mistake. They refused. I booked the room for one night because it was to be at the tail end of a week in a Vrbo cottage. When Hurricane Fiona went through, our Vrbo cottage was damaged and we could no longer stay there. The Vrbo host and Vrbo were amazing and refunded our deposit immediately. They were very professional and courteous and I will definitely try to stay with them when the cottage is repaired. The same could NOT be said about the Lord Nelson. They arrogantly refused to consider any changes to the reservation. Even speaking to the manager, they refused to budge on their cancelation policy. I will never stay here. I found their service unprofessional, discourteous, arrogant and mean. read more

'Lord Nelson Hotel' was a favourite spot to lodge in Halifax when I lived in New Brunswick and Newfoundland & Labrador, when travelling to Halifax for both business and pleasure stays. The south end of the city location was fantastic, close to everything within the downtown and city's south side -- with Spring Garden shopping and dining, Point Pleasant Park, and the Halifax Gardens, and more so nearby. A very classic and majestic-looking hotel. Clean and comfortable rooms, and very friendly, welcoming service from all staff. It was my 'home away home' on a good many occasions during my years working / living in Canada's Atlantic Provinces. On my pleasure trips, it was perfect location to get together with friends, and head to some of our favourite downtown pubs for chatter & refreshments. And during the day, a chance to shop and browse stores I missed. Nice to see it is still there, and still functioning under its original name. I truly enjoyed my many stays there over the years . Would sure enjoy a re-visit some day, but until then, will live on the fond memories I have from my former stays there. read more

Good place to stay in downtown Halifax that's right opposite the public garden and is about 15 minutes walking distance to all the restaurants and bars. Check in was straightforward. Free wifi present. There's a bar downstairs which is actually quite nice. Petite double room was actually not that small. Beds were comfy and there was good shower amenities (just the usual ones). Only negative was the parking which is expensive, you can maybe find street parking in and around the hotel itself. read more

Stay away from this hotel. The pictures are nothing like the reality. The minute you walk in side the hotel you'll be blinded by the bright fluorescent cool lights inside the interior of the hotel which shows every ugly details of cracks on the walls and floors. The funny part is that these ugly light bulbs are placed on beautiful expensive looking chandeliers. The furniture looks beaten up and old. The front desk staff are nice but they look tired. They are not well groomed. You would expect this hotel with that much history to have better services. They need to do major maintenance and repairs. The elevators are so slow, old, and some have key scratched graffiti seen through a cheap paint job. The first room they gave us was so bad and depressing. Giant room with a small old bathroom with a scratched & beaten up door. The ac/heater was an old unite sticking out the window. The curtains were not customized for their windows. There are huge gaps between each window which did not serve the purpose for blackout curtains. In general, for the price you're paying, you would expect much better quality of a hotel. While having breakfast in the morning in the main dinning room, they play old 90's pop/R&B music which doesn't go with the theme of a hundred year old hotel. I feel bad for the staff, because they are only here to work and they always get the complaints from customers as we have witnessed in several occasions of our stay at Lord Nelson Hotel. read more

I recently stayed at the Lord Nelson for date night on the town with my wife. This hotel frequently comes up as one of the nicest in the city, but I think that 's more based on reputation than the facts. The good: - Location, location, location - the views of the Public Gardens are fantastic, not to mention being walking distance to everything that downtown Halifax has to offer. - Old school charm - they don't make lobbies like this anymore, with its dark woods, chandeliers and the mezzanine overlooking it all. The Arms, their hotel restaurant run by RCR, puts other hotel restos and their generic modern designs to shame. - The halls and rooms seem to have been recently renovated/updated. The Bad(ish): - The free wifi was suitable for minor browsing and such, but if you want to stream some Netflix while you wind down for the night, you're gonna be SOL. The Ugly: - Like many other reviews here and elsewhere will state, the rooms are small; at least the one we got was. Maybe you can get bigger by shelling out for it, but this room was easily less than 200 square feet, and with no hall between the bedroom and the main hallway, you easily here passerby. Whenever they updated this place, they should have went the whole nine yards like The Hollis did, which has much bigger and nicer rooms for a similar, and often cheaper, price. - Sometimes it's just the small things, ya know? There was a noticeable lack of power outlets at either side of the bed, which is a faux pas in the day and age. And you know what's worse than bland hotel room art? The empty, boring walls in our room that did't have anything on them. It was cool to see the interior of this Halifax fixture, but even in our little city there's better options just a few blocks away. read more

Probably one of the best hotels in Halifax for the price you pay, which is not very much considering its prime location. Lord Nelson was, from what I know, recently renovated and it looks very modern inside as a result. There's also a pub inside the hotel, although I never went inside the entire time I stayed here. I was in the top floor of the hotel. The rooms also looked extremely open concept and modern, and I can tell the floor was recently coated with fresh new paint. However, I found that my room lacked heat, and there was no proper way to turn the heat on higher as it seemed to be automatic. The bathrooms were okay though, as were the working desk and the TV. My hotel room also faced a construction site, so there was a lot of noise even at night. No biggie though. Concierge service was very good, including the fact they kept my luggage in the hotel after I checked out. The location is certainly central and it wasn't a terrible experience, so I wouldn't object to staying here again next time. read more

The best bits: Really beautiful old architecture and lobby touches, room service (including lobster rolls and french onion soup, a winning combination I enjoyed twice) until 11pm, right next door to an excellent local coffee shop, views of the public gardens. The pits bits: The room was really, really small, and comparatively to other hotels I've stayed at in Halifax, the priciest. They said it was a queen bed, but I think that's kind of one of those McDonald's 100% beef situations. Tiny. Lastly, I arrived about an hour and a half before check in and they didn't have my room ready. I know I was early, but they didn't even offer to take my bags and I lugged them to the restaurant. The hotel was fine, staff/service was fine, but if I go back to Halifax again, I would likely stay elsewhere for a couple reasons: * Location is a little more away from the downtown than I like. * No fault of the hotel, but more homeless/panhandlers around the corner by the Tim Hortons/McDonalds. * No free breakfast. Again, it wasn't a bad experience or anything like that, but I would prefer other options where I have stayed in the past. that being said, if I stayed here again I certainly wouldn't mind, compared to other places I've stayed in my travels, this is better, just not optimal in this case. Step back in time and step into class! The Lord Nelson reminds me of the Titanic every time I walk into it. Not because it has an overabundance of ice or an eerie feeling that something terrible is going to happen such as a cheesy love story and a predictable storyline. But because it has a very old fashioned style of class to it. When you walk in you are surrounded by brass and a chandelier. They have a great Pub called The Victory Arms with good food at reasonable prices. Their staff are very nice and professional. The Lord Nelson is also a hot-spot for groups to come and have their meetings or banquets. This Hotel makes you feel important and you always leave your stay knowing that you got exactly what you've paid for and then some. It has a great location right downtown and across the street from the Halifax Public Gardens. The hotel offers complimentary internet service (limited). I ordered burger for dinner which was descent. The staff were friendly and professional. The only draw back, cleanliness was suboptimal! Very impressive. This is not your cookie-cutter hotel (it's way better!) The Atmosphere: This hotel is like walking into another era. Beautiful, Victorian-style, historic decor and pristine service. I've been to upscale swanky hotels and this one tops it (and it's not even in the upscale genre!) Love the warm hospitality and talking to the doormen is like you've known them forever. The rooms: they are standard rooms with older decor but functional. I love walking through the halls to get there (passing the old-style gold elevators it's filled with sparkling chandeliers, glass mirrors, and glass tables...stunning!) The hotel is falling apart. For the price, things should be updated and cleaned but they never are. There is no heat or a/c in the lobby so whatever the temperature outside, that is the temp. The wifi is hard to use because it is so slow and shared among the hotel. There is no option to upgrade? They are not customer service focused. The Lord Nelson Hotel is swanky! It has a lovely old-school charm about it, from the cool, retro mailbox by the elevators to the professional politeness of the staff. The room prices go hand-in-hand with the swankiness though. I stayed in one of the smallest rooms they offer (a petite double) and joked with my husband that I was sleeping in the equivalent of a twin and a half sized bed. So, if you need more space you may want to get one of the larger rooms. The location is quite nice, just across the street from the gardens and plenty of shops and restaurants. They also have a restaurant in the hotel that serves room service if you don't feel up to going out. It's definitely a favorite place to stay for me when in Halifax! read more

Show me a beautiful hotel lobby and I'll show you a very standard room to counterbalance. As it goes with lots of hotels, the Lord Nelson not being any different. The lobby is beautiful. It's historic. Old world. Opulent. The staff is cordial. And freshly dressed with flowers (which wound up being the perfume smell I encountered every day as I walked in). The view was decent from the 9th floor. The wi-fi, free. But for such opulence and grandeur in the lobby, I was shocked by the lack of quality in the linens. From duvet to bathroom towel, how threadbare were thee. Am I becoming a hotel snob? Probably. But I maintain, the towel in my hotel room should at the very least be the same quality as the towels I can purchase at Ikea. read more

With it's beautiful Victorian-inspired decor (no drab beiges or creams typical of other establishments to be found here), friendly, helpful staff, and gorgeous, luxurious rooms with charming views (especially if you can snag one facing the Public Gardens), this is absolutely my favourite hotel in Halifax. I have stayed here a few times, in three different kinds of rooms. The business suite was stunning, very spacious with rich decor and beautiful furnishings. The classic guest room was more than satisfactory. Of course not quite as nice as the suite, but again very pleasing to the eye, and larger than the basic rooms at a number of other hotels I have stayed at. The "Petite" room is a smaller version of their classic guest room, but still remarkably larger than the average room in at least one place I have stayed, and quite charming. Another reason to love this hotel is their pub, The Victory Arms, which provides excellent food and service. I also have to say that I attended an event here in October, Hal-Con, Halifax's first annual sci-fi and comic convention (what? Star Trek is cool...), and not surprisingly to me, the staff at The Lord Nelson did an excellent job of accomodating us. Especially considering the number of people in attendance was at least double that originally projected by the event's coordinators. read more

The man friend and I won a GC to stay at the Lord Nelson at his Christmas staff party. We decided to cash it in to celebrate my birthday weekend despite the fact that we both live less than a 10min walk away. When we called to make the reservation they "didn't have any rooms available" for the amount of our GC, but we could upgrade to a "nicer" room for $40+. So we figured what the hell, might as well. The room itself was clean and had a nice comfy bed, The layout of the room was strange, and the bathroom was pretty tiny, but all in all, no complaints on that end. Upon returning to our room after dinner, we ordered 4 bottles of Olands via room service. Do you know how much that shiz ended up costing?! $28.94!!! For 4 Olands!!!! I checked, and no, they were not laced with gold as the price might imply! Total rookie mistake on our part for not thinking ahead to bring our own beer, but still, nearly $30 for some local beer? Yikes... Our upgraded room included "complimentary" continental breakfast, so we hit that up in the next morning. The normal price of the breakfast is somewhere in the vicinity of $12.95 I think. Again, no gold laced waffles or anything.... I definitely would not have paid that much for some fruit and pastries... Sure it was filling, but the price for what was offered seems a little outlandish. All in all, nothing to really complain about for sure, but nothing to really rave about either. For a joint that totes itself as being one of the nicest hotels in town, some greater attention to details needs to happen before this statement can be considered totally true. read more

Perhaps one of the more posh Halifax hotels, Lord Nelson keeps it classy in the old fashioned, cordial sort of way-- and with vivid interiors of Victorian inspired. Playing on the historical figure, Lord Nelson, all detailing is tied into the romantic whimsy of old time tales. From the careful lighting and subtle shrubbery, to the rich wooden heights of the lobby where chandeliers take rise, there is an overall sense of richness here. Beautiful rooms, cordial and accommodating staff, Lord Nelson & Suites is a spot to stay for those who appreciate decadence. Another plus, is that the hotel is situated directly across from the Public Gardens, which in the summertime, are a beautiful venture into landscaped flowers, trees and ponds. With their own lovely dining spot called The Victory Arms, the hotel is also seconds away from shops, restos, cafes and city scenes. A safe bet, and perhaps more of a pricey stay, its a good one. I'll try and make a long story short here.. I booked a room here for two nights with a pretty great deal on Hotels Tonight. The hotel has a great reputation so I was happy to get such a good rate. Unfortunately the hotel room we got was extremely filthy. There were spider webs, dust everywhere and all sorts of drug and bodily fluid residues. The head of house keeping came to take a look and was horrified. She handled it very well and told us she would use the room as a teaching experience for the other house keepers. She also upgraded us to a nicer room, which was appreciated. The upgraded room was very decent and we had a good time there. My only other draw backs are that the wifi is expensive and the parking tricky. I would probably not stay there again unless I knew I was getting an upgraded room. The night manager was a really awesome guy as well and helped us out on more than one occasion. read more

Deeply impressed. I got an excellent deal through hotels.com for a discounted Junior Suite. The room was immaculate and the bed extremely comfortable. (Some other reviewer complained about the linens. No gripes in my book.) The neighborhood is ideal. I visited from New York City for the Nova Scotia Tattoo. The hotel is right on the route of the Tattoo parade and directly across the street from the Halifax Public Gardens. A major shopping district is right around the corner, and easy walking distance to many city attractions, as well as to Dalhousie University. The restaurant / English pub is everything it's cracked up to be. Excellent and friendly service and great food. Wi-fi is free. My only complaint is that the service is sporadic from my room. Oddly, I could connect in the restaurant across the street, but often couldn't get a connection from my room. Still, the fact that they offer free service is to be applauded. This is definitely on my list to return to. read more

The Lord Nelson is where my cousin stays every time he is in town. I have to say this is a great Hotel. Right on Spring Garden Road, for a little night life and across from the Public Gardens for that nice stroll though. The rooms here are spectacular at least the one he and his family had, it was actually two rooms attached. Fully equipped! It was like an apartment. The staff here were great as well and we ate at the pub, which had great food. This Hotel has a little bit of the WOW factor when you walk in. I decided to stay here because the price was right, as was the location -- and I had a fabulous experience. The room was very nice and clean, and the TV worked well, as did the air condition. One of the great things about the hotel is its fantastic restaurant, The Arms. I have been to 27 countries and am pretty adventurous, but I ate all of my meals (except for my grocery store purchase) at this restaurant: The shepherd's pie, pizza, hamburger and hand-cut fries, buffet breakfast, beer, and pinot grigio--all of it was delicious and reasonably priced. Also, I want to thank Styles, Benson (in the hotel), Linsay, Olivia, and Shane for their spectacular, friendly service. Thank you very much for a wonderful stay in Halifax. read more

The Lord Nelson has definitely come a long way from it's rather sorted past. What was once a hotel for the lower middle class has now become the pinnacle of comfort for the those who wish to in style. Located just off Spring Garden Road, The Lord Nelson is within walking distance of anything you'd want to see on the peninsula. The staff are very accommodating and will definitely go the extra mile to make sure you are comfortable in your room. And what a room it will be! Even the cheaper ones make your bedroom look like a waste of time. The beds are comfortable, the showers are clean, the TVs are flat screened and crystal clear. From the staff, to the decor, to the location, to the great rooms, this hotel has it all! It's won't be cheap though, so keep that in mind before you book a week in the Lord Nelson! read more

On dec 10 2011 I booked a room for for 1 night for me & my 10 year old daughter for the 24th of dec 2011.On dec 20 2011 I called the hotel to confirm and make sure the room was going to be ready for us. They told me they couldn't find my reservation and that they were full on that day and could not accommodate me and my daughter. I was then left to search for a room at another hotel on such short notice. I luckily found one at the westin nova scotia on barrington street. I will never do business with the lord Nelson again. I've stayed here on 4 occasions now to mostly satisfactory result. This time was for a quick overnight while I was apartment hunting in the city. I booked a regular queen room. When I checked in they said there were no queen rooms available (I specifically booked an available one). They gave me a regular double, I looked at it and was not impressed with the layout or location. They then asked if I want a petit queen room which would have been under the value I paid for, I reluctantly paid for an upgrade to a bigger room-something that should have been offered to me free in the first place. Room was fine, small with an odd format, but to be expected in such an old building. I had a long night of work, so had hoped to sleep in until 10 or 11am before noon checkout but was awoken at 9am by constant hammering (presumably repairs) which went on until I left my room at 11. Seems like common sense that this should have waited until much closer to, or after, checkout time. Will be reluctant to stay here again based on this experience. read more

World's tiniest room. Bed more uncomfortable than what I slept on in college. Yes, good location and old, pretty building. But I'd prefer less character in exchange for a room suitable for someone larger than a hobbit. This would not be my choice next time. read more
