TL;DR There was some good, but I found the really terrible at home. Let's start with the good. The fish department was nice! I enjoyed the display case as it looked clean and filled at noontime. My husband thought the fried fish was nicely seasoned and cooked well. The rest of the store was clean, the items were labeled well, but maybe because I was unfamiliar with the store layout I had some trouble finding some of the sale items. Either they weren't available or were placed elsewhere. The cashier who helped me was observant and greeted me without making me feel out of place. Please give him July 4th off. Now the bad. Maybe I shouldn't think that sale items automatically mean they are going bad, but some of the produce items I was looking for could have been left off of the bins. The majority of available papayas were soft to touch, the mangoes were soft and wrinkly, and the loose potatoes... the potatoes! They were firm, not old and sprouted, so I thought they were good. Why did I have to cut away half of them because they were black on the inside?? I guess I don't know how to pick potatoes, but neither does the produce team. Paying for rotten, inedible food is not something I want to do in this economy. I expect grocers to inspect the produce they're selling and have the decency to do right. I was at this Ranch Market today, ordered an agua fresca and payed for it I asked the lady cashing me out if I could pay for two other items there she denied, so since I had bread I went to the bread section and payed for my other two items and left. As I was heading to my vehicle I had the older lady and the store manager coming after my boyfriend and I saying we didn't pay and to show them the receipt, we went inside and the cashier told them we had already payed as he and the other gentlemen in the bread area were very sweet and polite. Love this place if only they would have more than one cashier on the restaurant area. I always come here and really what frustrates me is the waiting time especially during lunch. You guys already know that lunch time is busy, you should've more people on the food area and have some prepacked food for a faster service. It takes so long not because the people are slow but, because of lack of strategy. People should be briefed daily on the tasks and what to do to have everyone happy including you guys. The cashier should just be cashier and not getting the product himself. People's break time is over by the time they get to punch their orders in when all along the food was ready. I am originally from Southern California so I'm used to having a Vallarta around. Since moving to Surprise AZ I haven't been able to find anything remotely close to that until my friend brought me here. I was in Mexican item heaven. We came on a weekend and it seemed as though the menudo was popular so I ordered two 32 ounce containers to go. I picked up a few other various items. All in all I really enjoyed it, my only issue was that the workers were a little rude... idk if it's because I didn't speak Spanish or what but they weren't very helpful and would help other people before my friend and I even if we were there first. One man cut in front of me for my menudo and took the one I ordered. I realized I needed to be more assertive and that helped out in the meat department. Great products, however, this review is about how at least one person handled food: I asked for chorizo and then cheese, and the woman helping me didn't change gloves after touching the uncooked chorizo to grab string cheese. Los Altos is like every modern supermarket that offers full service meat department, pharmacy items, baked sweets, picnic supplies and a full line of groceries. However, what the other markets cant offer and Los Altos can is a quality line of authentic mexican foods. Los Altos is where I go to get my homemade tortillas, tortilla chips, and fresh made salsas. As soon as you walk through the doors of Los Altos you know this is not the normal grocery store. You feel like you entered a new world. There is mexican music playing through out the store, smells of mexican food, mexican baked goods, and authentic Agua Fresca in large glass jars. Tucked in the corner of Los Altos, is a huge tortilla-making machine. The smell of fresh tortilla in the morning draws you in and you can't avoid the temptation to purchase a few dozen fresh and hot off the press. The food is excellent. Everything is reasonably priced & the portions are big enough that you will take home leftovers. I had a breakfast burrito for just $3.49, and it was big! I have aslo had their pollo asado deal which included a full grilled chicken, rice, beans, salsa and 20 corn tortillas and it was also delicious. The produce is fresh, great prices. The meats are a great value and they have cuts that you normally only find in Mexico or other Latin American carnicerias (butcher shops). The aisles are a little cramped which means you have to coordinate with other shoppers. Now, their bakery is a real delight! From their sweet breads like conchas and cochitos to the truly amazing cakes; everything reminds me of being a kid in Mexico. The aguas frescas and hot, ready to eat meals are a great addition to this outstanding maarket. I recommend the carnitas with the authentic made in sight rice and beans with some hot salsa and fresh made tortillas! To steal from Dora's backpack "Delicioso! Yum yum yum yum!" I shop at this location all the time but todau will be my last. I go to checkout lane #6 and the cashier is Natalie. Natalie told me i had to get out of line because she felt i had too many items (i had 16) for her lane and it was store policy to make customers go to another lane. I explained that theres no one behind me and my sons patience is wearing thin (he's Autistic) and i need to be checked out a fast as possible. She refuses and my son and i are forced to go to another line and wait another 20 minutes in another line. Meanwhile hes screaming and hitting himself cause he needs to leave. Finally a manager comes amd apologizes for the rude employee that is still laughing at my son and i like its a joke. Most days we visit this store mostly for convenience since it's so close to home but customer service doesn't seem to exist at all in this store- from the employees to upper management. The employees make it seem like it's a chore to help anybody makes sense to why their turn over rate with employment is terrible. When you're done with trying to get help from the employees with no avail and try looking or asking for a manager there's never any sense of urgency or sight of one period. Fresh produce and nice service. Yesterday, I walked out with the loveliest, sweetest boxes of strawberries and did not pay organic prices ($.99/pint). I wanted to make guacamole. I found small avocados (2 for $.99). I was also excited to find delicious ripe yellow mangoes (3 for $.99). As I was scouring the aisles for a can of black beans, I asked the young man for directions in Spanish, he replied in English. It is nice to know that if you don't speak Spanish, there are clerks in the store who can assist you in English. The check out lines at 5:30 pm were longer. There were 5 opened with about 4 carts deep. Most people had full carts of groceries. The lady behind me in the line had a bag of green chiles. I was curious and asked how to cook them. They were roasted anaheim chiles, and she was going to make beef stew with hominy in a slow cooker. The cashier chimed in and said they were delicious with carne asada.
