We came here on a weeknight and although there was only one other table service was a little slow. It was also tough since our server was monolingual Spanish and so we didn't always understand what she was saying. The menu is also in Spanish. So it might be tougher, though we have gotten an English speaking waiter before. I think it just depends. We've been here a couple of times and the Papusas are a bit bigger than other places nearby but they are also a little more expensive. The side of rice and beans is on the most expensive side at around $9. The Papusas are crispy on the outside and very well prepared -- fresh and tasty. The horchata tasted a little burnt or something but overall the food is good. It's just a little on the pricey side. read more

I've been to all the restaurants in Hayward over the years that make pupusas and went to this one for the first time. It's located across the street from Kennedy park with plenty of parking. I ordered 7 pupusas revueltas which have beans, cheese and chicharrón inside. The restaurant is very clean with plenty of seating. The ladies working were nice and I only waited about fifteen minutes for my order. The pupusas were a little thicker which I loved and delicious with all the toppings. They are close to home so I'll be back next time I'm craving pupusas. They have other delicious salvadoreño dishes and drinks to offer. read more

This is a family favorite and we frequent a few times per month. Being Central American, it is nice to have foods that remind me of home and also places I'm able to purchase some of the snack favorites. Reading other reviews, it was very clear there is a cultural disconnect for some. With all good non-American restaurants, can you even trust the food if they aren't monolingual!? Service is a bit slow by American standards, but we tend to want to eat quickly and leave. It is more laid back here. You're always greeted as you come in and offered menus and beverages. Depending on staffing, your server may also be helping in the kitchen. Plus it's never too long of a wait to be served or receive the freshly made food. The pupusas are always well made with just the right amount of toasted/burnt cheese along the edges. I especially love when there is crispy cheese on mine. The platano maduros with beans and crema always hit the spot. The smoothness of the beans is my favorite. Reminds me of the beans and crema slurry I used to mix up as a kid. Now I eat them separate. My favorite drink is the maracuja, but the Jamaica is also a favorite. My niece consistently gets the horchata, which I'll presume is good. Oh forgot to mention the fried yucca and chicharones! The yucca is perfect. So so perfectly friend and soft/fluffy inside. Try all the good food! You won't be disappointed. Just budget enough time to sit and enjoy it while still keeping in mind that most of the food has to be prepared per order. You can't go wrong with the Pupusa loca (a dinner plate size) with all the fillings, fried fish (served whole) and the freshly made tortillas. Or even any of the soups (especially good on a hot day IYKYK) I'm sure I'll be back next week and look forward to ordering my favorites. read more

Delicious but not consistent. The service is OK. Ambience is nice, but I've never ate in there. They are very generous with the cabbage and it's delicious. The pupusa's are the only thing I've tried there. You'll eat one pupusa and it's perfection you eat the next one and it will be lacking cheese and meat or suppppppper thin. They would get a 5 stars if they were a bit more consistent with their deliciousness. I know they're handmade and they all won't be the same every time. They should be able tell when it's time to sacrifice a pupusa and not give it to your customers. read more

I went here after work one day. They looked closed and there were only 2 women in the building so it took a while for them to realize they had a customer. Their food was a lot more greasy than I am used to in Pupusas. The staff was nice and they are observing social distancing which is great. This place is absolutely disgusting. From the restaurant to the food. The restrooms are absolutely disgusting, no toilet apart, piss everywhere. The drinks and food are overpriced and KEEP IN MIND, chicken nuggets for kids are NOT nuggets they are BONE IN WINGS. The menu is limited. The waitress was rude as well, don't waste your time or money! Trust me when I say there are better places! I still paid for that trash chile relleno that was 18.99$ it was soggy, cold and disgusting. ABSOLUTE rip off. -1 star if I could! read more

Showed them the order, then had to wait for management to okay the order being made. Waited for 15 minutes to talk with management, finally got fed up and bounced. Gonna call CCC to nix the charge. This is strike 3 for this place. Place is dingy with sticky floors, service is slow, and now food doesn't even come out. Love supporting new business and small businesses too, so I came to have dinner with my family. Location: PRIME location on a busy Street and has a park across the street from it and PLENTY of parking. Ambiance: this is probably the only reason they won't get 5 stars is because they lack decor and sound. It is quieter than a library (sad). Most Salvadorian restaurants have music playing and tons of decorations or painted walls, however not here. If they put some music and placed Salvadorian country side pictures then it would be perfect. Food: Well my #1 is don't order random items at a Salvadorian restaurant. They mostly serve Pupusas so order pupusas and the apps and deserts. Pupusas were big and filled right. They filled it with an equal amount of cheese, meat/pork & beans. Tasty! The rice was good, took me back to eating my grandmas rice when visiting El Salvador. The Nuegados were FRESH! I've ordered them at the other pupuserias but they taste frozen, so Los Platanaros please don't stop making them fresh. Nuegados are Yucca (Cassava) patties in a delicious syrup. They go great with coffee. I had their Chilate and it was ok, I've had better. Like they added too much ginger. Overall: worth your $$ read more

The pupusas here taste pretty great. We often order take out from here and even when they are somewhat busy. The horchatas taste great and aren't too sweet. They have a nice big open dinning room with enough tables and a large parking lot as well. Only thing is that they only speak spanish so ordering over the phone can sometimes be a little bit diffcult. read more

This is my second time having pupusas and my first time trying this local spot. I always pass by this place on my way home from work and never really took notice of it until now. My cousins and I had just finished a work out session and we decided to grab some lunch. We all decided on trying this spot for pupusas and it definitely satisfied our appetite. The worker there was SUPER friendly! She helped us out in trying to decipher the menu since most of it was in Spanish. I recognized a few words and she gave us a mini lesson on certain words and dishes on the menu in Spanish. She was really nice and the service was excellent. I had the chicken and cheese pupusa and it came with two ziploc bags: one with a red sauce and another with pickled cabbage and carrots similar to a coleslaw. The chicken was nicely marinated and seasoned, slightly too salty but that added to the overall dish itself. My favorite part of the pupusa was the cheese. The cheese was perfectly salty in a good way, and I had to do the obligatory melted cheese pull and surprisingly, the pull was good! It's been awhile since I ate at this Salvadorean restaurant in Hayward on Hesperian Blvd. Language barrier is a little tough if you don't speak Spanish. Tight $$$$ budget nowadays, so I ordered light dining in house. You have to have patience receiving your food ordered because most of the foods are cooked to order. The best thing ordered was the tamales for $3.99. It was the best home made masa tamale I ever ate period! Wish the chicken was more tender and had more flavor. If the kitchen solves that problem, this food item is definitely unbeatable! The Pupusas were delicious but kind of small for the $3.99 price tag. The curtito vegetable oregano slaw salad (came to the table in a pint size plastic container w/serving tongs). Was finely shredded but needed a more vinegar/salt touch to make it exceptional. Other Salvadorean restaurant only give you 25% of what Los Platanares offers for sure! Will try it again on another time but $$$$ is tight nowadays and will try different food options next time for sure "+". read more

They have DELICIOUS pasteles and atol shuco!!! A lot of Salvadoran places do not carry these foods. I believe the quesadillas(pan) are homemade and perfectly made at that. To the "genius" that posted a picture of a SALVADORAN tamale and complained that it's a "Chicken tamale no sign of corn husk" and "Tamale cooked in oily paper", these are traditional Salvadoran tamales that are wrapped in BANANA LEAVES! Corn husk is not used for Salvadoran tamales. Also, the "oil" this person claims to have encountered is literally water that the tamales are boiled in. So do your research before posting ignorant and negative comments about small businesses who are just sharing their wonderful recipes with some people who don't even deserve them. read more

Very good food, welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. Price is higher than I would have guessed, but I'm kinda cheap and inflation is hitting us all. I was starving after work and happen to drive the place so I came inside and was quickly greeted with a menu. I asked if they do to-go ordering and the waitress said they did. Sure the foods ok but the service sucks. Don't order online either..... They allow orders to through MenuStar - an online ordering system you can pay through. Apparently the restaurant and this online space don't talk, and the orders never get put through. Secondly, the money is STILL CHARGED and then you have to dispute the charges with your CC company. Why would any business want to work this way? They gave me the option of waiting another 30 minutes (and then pay for the food a second time) so that I could have something to eat - lol - how gracious of them to charge me twice for the same food. Screw you. This place is already slow, the service sucks, and the lady literally walked away from me when I told her I wanted to dispute the charge and not wait for my food. I love this place. You can call and order ahead. They make the best pupusa. And the prices are affordable. Sometimes they get crazy busy. Plantain is good, soaps are rich and healing. You miget want to call ahead. In case it's crowed or closed. I usually just drop in. They are the best pupusa for real not too greasy. I like that. Great customer service. Our waitress was extremely attentive and checked in several times for coffee refills and to see if there was anything else we may need. The food is excellent. I ordered the bistec encebollado. Well seasoned steak. It comes with rice, beans and a green salad. They also make their tortillas from scratch and they are soooooo delicious.
