Nobody needs the large mixed plate (unless you're sharing it?). The ribs were salty with just a kiss of smoke. Far superior to Dreamland and fall-off-the-bone tender, I thought they were alright. They were moist and very porky. The chopped pork was watery with very little flavor. I wasn't a fan of the bbq sauce either- it mostly water with flecks of yellow mustard and heavy on the black pepper. I'm certain it was just a small container of their mop sauce used in the pit to moisten and flavor the meat as it smokes. Coleslaw was fine. Zesty with a mayonnaise base. There was the distinct bite of dill pickles. I think they just use leftover dill pickle juice to moisten it. The star of the show was the potato salad. Zingy with plenty of mustard it perfectly cut the richness of the fatty meats.

My innards are at peace, and that's worth mentioning. The name Happy Hippy always makes me smile. I'm about as far from a hippy as you can get, but it's a fine conversation starter when ordering. And when the pizza arrives, I'm happy enough to live up to the name. The atmosphere is part of the charm. The walls are decorated with license plates from everywhere -- California to the Northeast -- mixed in with good old Alabama tags. One California plate in particular caught my eye: a personalized "90210." That zip code is permanently etched into my memory. Back in the day, every high school girl seemed to be glued to the television after an episode of Beverly Hills, 90210. I never watched a single episode myself, but somehow that number is burned into my skull for life. Funny how that works. We've been coming to Southern Ale House Dockside since they opened and have enjoyed many great…read moredinners here over the years. Tonight was no exception. The crowd was lighter than usual, but the food was still top-notch. I went with the Buffalo Bird, and my wife ordered The Corbell--both with fries. I couldn't resist trying their special side tonight, the Oakra (yes, that's how they spell it!), and it was worth the laugh and the bite. Service can run a little slow at times, and tonight was one of those nights, but once the food hits the table, it's hot, fresh, and flavorful--hard to complain about that. The restaurant is always clean, spacious, and inviting. The patio was full this evening, so we grabbed a table inside, but we still enjoyed the great atmosphere. We love the live music on Thursday nights that carries through the weekend--it adds to the whole lakeside vibe. And speaking of the lake, the view of the water, boats, and docks makes for some prime people-watching (especially the rich folk pulling up in style). It's especially nice not having to fight the crowds in town--especially during a Bama home game! Overall, Southern Ale House Dockside continues to be one of our favorite local spots for good food, good music, and good times.
