Happy in her forever home :)
    Allison K.

I had a really great experience with adopting our dog, Mochi, this time last year. And she is such a joy in our lives. I emailed a few times with one of the coordinators to ask about a few of the dogs and they were always prompt to reply and very friendly. It felt a little mail-order-bride-ish seeing the dogs we had selected to meet at the event in Arlington. But it was nice to meet a few dogs and see who fit best with our energy. The volunteers are pretty amazing too...I really liked our dogs 'handler' for the day as she gave us space and cleaned up any accidents on the floor. Mochi came home with kennel cough but the vet said she was healthy besides that. During her month at LDCRF, she had been fixed and tested for heartworm, lyme disease, parasites and a host of other things. Her record showed that she weighed 10 lbs on her arrival to the shelter and when we got her she was up to 20 lbs. You have 2 weeks to decide if you want to keep the animal, after which you can still return him/her but you don't get a full refund. While I agree with some of the comments that it's a BIG rescue organization and it might be less personal to the animals and humans compared to a small mom/pop foundation, I have to say this group does a tremendous amount of good for animals that would have ended up euthanized. I almost cry to think of our Mochi not in our lives. Thank you Lost Dog!

I try to volunteer at least once a month handling dogs at LDCRF adoption events. It's a great way to get in some dog time, for those of us who are feeling a little pet-deprived in the city, and also a wonderful organization to work with. They hold events mainly at Petsmart locations all around Northern Virginia, including Fair Lakes (Fairfax), Manassas, Seven Corners, Leesburg, and Reston. LDCRF rescues dogs and cats from all across the eastern US, many coming out of shelters with 24-hour euthanasia policies. They then provide care for the animals indefinitely until they can find them adopted homes. I'm not sure which part of volunteering with LDCRF I like the best, the animals or the people... The dogs come from varying backgrounds and represent all breeds, temperaments, and levels of socialization, but I have never seen a dog (or cat) at an LDCRF event that I didn't feel comfortable around. The volunteers who help at the weekly adoption events are also a diverse bunch, but they all genuinely care for the animals, and I look forward to seeing familiar faces every time I go. LDCRF maintains up-to-date listings of available dogs and cats on their website (all of which have been spayed/neutered and vetted), so if you are looking to add a new member to your household I would definitely recommend taking a look there. If you see an animal on their website that you'd like to meet in person, you can request that it be brought to a specific adoption event. LDCRF also offers a two-week trial period during which you can return the animal for any reason, no questions asked. If something comes up down the road and you are unable to keep your adopted pet, they will also take them back (actually, all animals are required to keep an LDCRF tag on their collars). You can also help support the LDCRF by eating out at the Lost Dog Cafe ( http://www.yelp.com/biz/lost-dog-cafe-arlington ) or Stray Cat Cafe ( http://www.yelp.com/biz/stray-cat-cafe-arlington ), both in Arlington. All-around 5+ stars for this organization!

Letter from the dog foster--"her behavior can be scary if you don't know her intent"

I struggled with whether or not I want to write this but I feel like I have to warn others of my experience with this shelter. Please read this long review if you're considering this place to rescue a dog. The people I worked with from the shelter were very kind and responsive (ie answering my frenzied calls and emails outside of business hours) but it's imperative they improve their adoption processes. My experience was completely unacceptable and 100% avoidable. I adopted Daisy (aka Olive) from Lost Dog on November 30th. Her bio said she was great with other dogs and people (see picture). There was not one negative thing on her bio. My pre-screening for adopting her consisted of filling out an application, logging on to their system at noon to basically be thrown into a dog lottery, then a 10 minute screening call. During the call, I stressed that I have an apartment and am on the 16th floor with no yard. I was assured Daisy is a sweet dog that loves other dogs and people. I was told I was approved for her adoption and jumped in my car to go meet her. When I arrived at the adoption event, I met with a volunteer named Sue (a true guardian angel and total doggy queen) who walked with me and Daisy around the area and chatted with me about the dog and the adoption. Honestly, thank God for Sue. She was the only person that gave me any advice that day. After that, I paid my $425 and Daisy and I were off to my apartment. I received Daisy's file post adoption which included a letter from her foster mom that she was with for 9 months. In that letter, I found out that she has bad leash manners and "her behavior can be scary if you don't know her intent" (see photo). It is shameful and disgusting the shelter NEVER shared this info with me beforehand. I never would have proceeded with the adoption had I known this. They kept saying "you never know how a dog will react to a situation". They used the foster moms letter to write Daisy's bio... the just chose what they wanted people to know about her. The first couple of days were fairly smooth but by Tuesday I realized she was becoming more and more aggressive towards dogs and people. She lunged, barked, and growled at anyone that came near her. It was awful but she was so sweet just her and I in my apartment. I called a dozen different trainers, made a deposit for her to attend a $4k camp, talked to various dog experts, and bought all types of products to hopefully curb her aggression. I tried training her as well with simple commands like sit and stay. By the end of the week, she had attacked another dog (fortunately they are fine) and I knew I couldn't keep her here. When I took her back, I immediately saw a change in her demeanor. She was so happy to be back at the shelter. Upon her surrender, I messaged her foster to tell her about the situation and she told me Daisy had 24/7 dog door access. This is yet another thing I had no idea about. I would never adopt a dog that's used to having a yard to run in. I know there are people that have had good experiences with this shelter but there are also plenty others that have had negative experiences with them, just read some of the Yelp reviews. They do not do a good job at vetting adopters at all. They are not forthcoming with vital information. This was one of the most heartbreaking weeks of my life and everything that happened could have been avoided had they been honest and diligent from the getgo.

They let us know that based on the dog's profile, they recommended that we do a meet and greet with any family dogs we already have at home. So we get ready, load up our pup, and go to the center. When we walked in, we felt like the vibes were pretty off immediately. The front desk staff seemed to be pretty unfriendly, barely addressed us, and barely made eye contact with us. But we moved on and I tried giving them some grace... We then told them which dog we were interested in meeting and they let us go back to the kennel for a first glance. We came back out and when we asked for a meet and greet, the one worker seemed super hesitant in even allowing that. Lots of "ummm, yea, I guess you can" vibes. My mother-in-law waited in the lobby with our pup and they led my husband and I to their yard for a visit which went well and I asked if I could switch out with my mother-in-law and were told that it'd be best not to have the dog meet too many people in one instance since it has a "stranger danger" personality. What if the people after us wanted to meet him, would they have turned them down because it was "too many people"??? We then asked to have our pup meet since our meeting went well and were met with more hesitation. We let the staff know that we also have kids at home and they recommended that we come back with them so the adoptable pup could meet everyone at once instead of letting our dog meet in that moment.... we thought that was odd since we were already there and prepared. My husband was already over it and left and I went back in to ask if the dog we were interested in could be adopted that day or before we were able to come back. They let us know that they couldn't guarentee he'd still be there. Never once did they really walk us through the process or even offered that we could essentially put the dog on "hold" until I kept asking more questions. They finally directly us to a QR code that went to an interest form. I filled out the whole thing and then they were like, "oh, BTW, its a nonrefundable $50 fee/donation to put an animal hold on". So... fine.... because we really wanted to make sure he was still there when we came back. Fast forward to the next day, we bring our kids and our dog back in. They then tell us they they're going to have our dog meet their dog 1st and if that goes well, we can introduced the kids. What the actual crap since we already had our dog in the day before! So the meet and greet with the pups didn't go the best which isn't anyone's fault. We understand and recognize that is out of everyone's control and don't fault the staff for that interaction. One of the other workers who wasn't there the first day tried helping and made some suggestions to have us adopt and older dog but at that point we were ready to go. We were so frustrated with the entire process. They wasted our time, weren't upfront about the fee/donation, and the staff either didn't understand the process themselves OR they really didn't want it to actually work out with us from the moment we walked in there. We've adopted from Wolftrap Animal Rescue twice and had wonderful interactions. We also visited the Lorton Animal Shelter and everyone there was really kind and friendly so I'd recommend others going through one of those other agencies instead. We just hope our nonrefundable $50 donation goes to good use...

The evaluation fee was $25 (nonrefundable after online registration), and while the staff member who conducted it was polite, I left with the impression that she didn't particularly enjoy working with dogs. Fred is a very social, playful, and well-adjusted dog--he has attended daycare regularly since 4 months, plays comfortably with dogs of all sizes and ages, and has never been described as anxious. Despite that, I was told during the evaluation that he seemed nervous, though he was ultimately "cleared" for daycare. For his first half-day (about $36), I was told again that he was nervous and might only be suited for weekends. This didn't match the written "report card," which described him as social, well-behaved, and playing well with others. When I asked for clarification, the explanation shifted back to him being "anxious." Given Fred's long history of thriving in daycare environments, this inconsistency raised red flags. What concerns me most is not the evaluation itself, but the communication and transparency. Before the evaluation, I called to confirm whether there was weekday availability (since that's when I need care). I made it clear that if there wasn't space, I didn't want to waste time or money. Unfortunately, no one followed up, and after investing both time and nearly $60, I was told that Fred should only come on weekends. I was being "encouraged" to bring Fred only on weekends--something that doesn't meet my needs, but still generates revenue for the business. The manager would not speak to me when I came to pick up my dog and did not follow up with a phone call (I shouldn't be surprised no one ever returned a live call or voicemail before my visit....I should have stayed away). The facility itself is small, with play areas that appeared quite limited (approximately 10-15 feet across, divided into small sections with several dogs in each). While that setup may work well for some pets, it isn't what I would call spacious or enriching. It was very clean. That is the one bright spot. In short, I wish FurgetMeNot had simply been upfront about their capacity constraints. I can respect a business being full; what I can't respect is unclear communication and the suggestion that my dog's behavior was the issue when the real problem seemed to be limited weekday availability. Pet parents: if you are looking for consistent weekday daycare, I would recommend asking very directly about space before investing in their evaluation process. I personally won't be returning, as I value honesty and clear communication in any service that involves my dog. I wasted 2 days and $60 dollars on this place. Don't get scammed like me.

Yeah, it's a no for me, dawg…read more I took my dog to Fur-Get Me Not on Monday, December 9 at 3:15 PM for a daycare evaluation. Upon entry, I wasn't greeted particularly warmly by the front desk staff, but they did direct me to the person who would be completing my dog's evaluation. As the staff member, Christopher, who was actually completing my dog's evaluation was friendly and inviting, I did not think too much about the front desk staff. The evaluation cost $25 and it took about 20 minutes. Christopher took my dog to the back and had her meet other dogs and staff members. When the evaluation was over, he informed me that she had passed and answered most of my questions. I asked him what the pricing was for daycare, because it was not listed on the FAQ page that he provided me. He told me he didn't know, but that the front desk staff would be able to answer my question. After wrapping up to the evaluation, I walked over to the front desk to inquire about pricing for daycare. Keep in mind that while this is a full-service dog care facility, it seems that the main service-- or at least one of the most popular services-- that this facility provides is dog daycare. I asked the woman sitting at the desk about pricing. She told me something along the lines of, "we don't have the pricing listed on the brochure, but it is online." I then asked if she could just tell me the pricing. (I'm literally standing at the front desk at this point where they are supposed to answer questions about their services-- wouldn't you just tell me the price instead of directing me to go look it up for myself?!) She then responds "for what?!" with an unmistakable air of annoyance. Now, I would expect a front desk staff member to say something like, "sure, for which service?" The way she phrased her question seems like I was bothering her. I responded "for daycare" and then, she said "well let me just pull up the website and look..." The entire interaction was odd, like she was doing me a favor by providing pertinent info about the business at which she works. Also, why there isn't signage with the pricing for daycare at the front desk, who knows? I do know one thing though: if you act like I'm bothering you by asking you to do things within the scope of your job, I won't bother to spend my coins.
