    My poor sick baby....
    Eunice K.

My dog had HGE and it was the scariest week of my life. She is only about 9lbs and 4 years old and she was knocking on death's door. We frantically took her to RVRC emergency room and they were very caring. She was put into the "ICU" and kept for 5 days. Pros: They were very nice about updating us constantly They called at all hours to keep my anxieties in check They also let us visit constantly- and even gave us a private room once she had energy to move around They also communicated what they were doing and how much it would cost. Cons: It is VERY expensive. I'm talking 10-15k expensive. If you can't afford it, they have payment plans, BUT if you can't afford that they won't do the procedure, which could be what saves your animal. Overall I was very satisfied and would come here in an emergency.

    Yorkie for surgical visit
    Chelsey R.

Would highly recommend! Went to Regional Veterinary for a second opinion after my senior Yorkie fell down stairs and fractured her tibia. I saw Dr Anderson, emailed her my dog's prior records and asked for an honest assessment on her condition. First-- the receptionist Teri is absolutely amazing and a true gem! It's scary when you're worried about your pet, but she was so kind and energetic when I called, listened to all (I had a lot over my fur baby) of my questions and concerns about a consult and treatment, and was up front about consultation visit costs and Dr Anderson's expertise. Second- Dr Anderson was about her business, she was on time for my consultation, reviewed my dog's records before I arrived and was knowledgeable about her case at the very beginning of our meeting. She was kind, honest and patient with me, explaining my dog's anatomy/bone structure and also adding additional information regarding the prior ortho/surgeon's recommended treatment. I was told she specializes in custom size casts for dogs and it's true. She fit my fur baby in a better sized cast for her tiny leg and one of her fractures healed completely through casting. We elected to do surgery for the second fracture and her entire team was professional and kind. They knew my dog by name and it made me feel like my girl was in good, caring hands both during her bandage/cast change visits and before/during/after surgery. I was extremely pleased with the care Dr Anderson and her staff gave my dog and would highly recommend their team to anyone in need of orthopedics/surgery for their fur baby. They removed a LOT of stress from what was a very stressful situation and their up front estimates helped me better plan for my dog's care because there were no hidden or surprise costs that I incurred during ANY of my visits there. This seems rare when visiting some vets these days. I live in DC and traveling to Springfield was certainly worth the drive in my opinion. Thank you to Dr Anderson, Teri, Tori and all the staff at Regional Veterinary Orthopedics & Surgery for your kindness and skill!

Sweet Erica in the oxygen chamber she really needed an exam and pain meds.

Dr Alvarez and several techs and front office staff are amazing- kind and helpful. Dr Alvarez is a very smart and compassionate practitioner. She pulled several hard cases through for our rescue group. With COMPASSION. WARNING - if Dr Nelson or the tech Mika are working, go elsewhere. I've never seen such callous approach to a TRAUMA CASE! This very sweet young cat was likely hit by a car and paralyzed- out in the bitter cold for days. They refused to let me provide her comfort or even TOUCH HER. Dr Nelson recommended euthanasia without even giving her an exam. I asked Dr Nelson to actually examine her with me so we can understand her injuries- they had put her in an oxygen tank with no pain meds given, and did not even examine her until I insisted I need this to make a decision. They then said I could go elsewhere if I didn't like their approach. The vet actually stated coldly to me "she's a stray"- like that means she does not deserve vet care!! The tech pulled the cat away from me several times when I wanted to calm and comfort her. This was horrible and very painful experience only salvaged by the proactive hospital manager who was really kind and recognized taking a trauma case to another vet would only delay this poor kitty's care. She secured us another medical team (Dr Alvarez) who were methodical, examined the kitty with kindness and helped me make the decision to end her suffering after we let her eat and enjoy some yummy food. RECOMMEND YOU Ask who the vet working is before going here. Avoid the tech Mika. She's just spiteful.

An fantastic staff that bought us just a little more time with our girl. Thank you all who were on shift on 17 Mar who ran the diagnostics and came back with, what turned out to be, very unfortunate news. We thought we would have up to a week, but it turned out to be only a day and a half before Keeva's situation became untenable. You were compassionate but matter of fact, helped us assess the risk, and made the right call given the circumstances. Your care allowed us to say our good-byes to Keeva. There is never enough time Thank you.

You know you've heard that if your indoor-outdoor cat who always comes home one day doesn't come home one day, something has happened. Well, it's true. Usually, Pablo (a.k.a. Bunky) comes back within minutes after being let out, but this day was different. We looked for him and looked for him, but came up empty-handed. Pablo has an AirTag and, curiously, it showed he was on our property. Finally, he appeared around 10:00pm at the back door. We were relieved, but noticed he had wounds on his hind legs. Because of our excellent experience we had last year with VEG-ER, we brought Pablo here. Pablo received top-shelf compassionate treatment from the VEG-ER staff, each of whom has a heart of gold. I really admire, respect and appreciate people that devote their lives to the care of pets. They're a blessing. We were told Pablo did not experience an animal attack, but maybe got stuck on a fence, and slipped. Pablo is home recovering now, getting stronger by the day. We basically live in the woods, and realize fully now that it is just too dangerous here to let him outside unsupervised anymore..

We've been to many pet ERs/urgent cares in the 8 years we've lived in NoVa and this the only hospital where we spoke to a doctor within a few minutes of walking in the door. They were thorough, took time to explain our treatment/testing options and answer questions, and made us feel like Norman's care mattered even when more severe emergency cases came in. At VEG, you can see everything, stay with your pet, watch their treatment, and staff are readily available to talk to or answer questions. That alone eased so much anxiety. Kenzie, one of the nurses that was assigned to Norman, was so kind. It was clear that everyone in the room cared about making these animals feel comfortable. More than one nurse came over to introduce themselves when we were preparing to leave Norman overnight. They offered us a room where we could stay with him if we wanted, and even asked what he liked to watch on TV to create a comfortable environment for him after we let them know he suffers from separation anxiety. The discharge and follow-up notes were also incredibly detailed, which made following up with our primary vet so much easier. No one ever wants to bring their animal to an ER, but this is now the only place we will go when we need urgent medical care. A HUGE thank you to everyone at VEG Alexandria for taking such good care of our dog!

Soon after, we determined it was time to euthanize our kitty. They have a special room for this, with comfortable chairs, Kleenex, and options for pet cremation containers if you want to get their ashes back. I really appreciated that they went through all the options and fees at the beginning. We paid before we had to go through the emotional euthanasia process, so we had alone time with our kitty in the last moments, and when she was gone, we could just leave. We experienced so much kindness and compassion from all the staff. It's also very clean and attractive. I only wish we'd found them sooner.

They never give any inclination of what they think her diagnosis might be, leaving me to consult doctor Google. I am old enough to remember when a veterinarian demonstrated care for animals **first and foremost.** This being a non-corporate owned veterinarian. I expected we would have a little bit of that experience. That was not to be the case. Long story short, our first visit amounted to approximately $1000 and that was without getting a diagnosis or the vaccines we had initially requested. We were informed that our next step would be to get a cardiology work up for $1500. And because I was not in a position to throw that money out immediately, with no idea where this might go (I mean, tell me what *could be the problem, what the treatment options would be for each, so I can make a decision on whether to pursue or not. I think that's reasonable) but in this case, the conversation ended. Fortunately, the following month, I found a vet who was willing to provide options. Unlike some, this new vet clearly doesn't think my dog deserves to die because her mom won't spend thousands at the drop of a hat with no idea where the bottom is. For 20% of the price, my dog has a treatment plan, and a doctor who actually cares. Pretty office, though. Nice staff, as well.

It felt as though profit was prioritized over patient care, particularly when dealing with elderly clients who may not fully understand medical decisions. While I was out of town, my mother-in-law brought in our family dog, Walter, after he fell and became paralyzed from the waist down. He was diagnosed with IVDD, yet no one at this hospital knew what stage he was in. After returning home and doing my own research, I determined that Walter was already at Stage 5 IVDD. I then contacted the veterinarian I work with at a different hospital. Based solely on the information I provided, she was able to conclude that Walter would most likely never walk again due to not receiving surgery in a timely manner. At no point did anyone at Columbia Pike explain the urgency of immediate surgery or that delaying it would drastically reduce his chances of recovery. Instead, we were told that three weeks of medication and strict crate rest would be sufficient. When I later called seeking clarification and guidance, the only recommendation given was to pay for an MRI to obtain more information. Additionally, despite knowing that my mother-in-law would have difficulty administering medications, no one offered basic suggestions such as using pill pockets. As a result, she resorted to giving Walter chicken nuggets to get him to take his medication--something that could have negatively impacted his health. This experience was deeply upsetting and highlights serious issues with communication, medical guidance, and patient advocacy at this clinic. If you truly love your pets and want the best for them, avoid this place at all costs.
