If the rooms are upstairs the journey can be a bit steep. However, they have a chair seat for those who can't make the climb. The host were Sinéad, and Shane. Along with two adorably polite young men Cathel and Ruairi. An older child Emma was away at university. Sinéad greeted us at the door with a warm welcome. Any and all questions were answered. We were absolutely delighted with our room. They were happy to direct us to local areas. There is a booklet in the room with plenty of information. Breakfast the next day was a treat. Shane is a head chef at a local restaurant and we were fortunate enough to have the experience of his delicious breakfast. They source local products. The eggs are from a house a few doors down. Meat is a local butcher, etc. Others staying in the B&B were delightful and we were able to share tips. However, Shane and Sinéad were amazing with their information on the area. We just got back from a week at Dromoland castle for my daughter's wedding. Our experience there…read moregreatly exceeded expectations. The wedding could not have gone better. The event space was beautiful. We were blown away by the food at dinner the evening before and at the wedding reception. Our friends are still talking about the risotto, beef Wellington and the fillet. It's rare to experience fine dining at an event, but that's exactly what was provided for us. Our family has traveled extensively. We can happily report that Dromoland is the best overall experience that we have ever had in a hotel. The castle and grounds are gorgeous and meticulously maintained. Most historic hotels have fusty guest rooms. Dromoland had modern, luxurious rooms with state of the art fittings. Everything in the rooms was great, but the beds and showers were world class. Our guests were raving about their accommodations. The common areas were fun to spend time in. The live music was a treat. The food at the castle is by far the best food we had in Ireland. It would hold its own against any fine dining establishment. The bride and groom had an amazing dinner in the Earl of Thomond restaurant. I had the best fish and chips of my life in the Gallery and was pleased to quaff my first pint of Guinness in Ireland at the cocktail bar. Breakfast was an event in itself. The food and service were amazing. We commandeered a large table and spent a couple of hours every morning with a rotating cast of family and friends. The excellent staff took it all in stride. The activities were great- my family was captivated by the falconry. Jane's hotel tour was a lot of fun. One friend played an enjoyable round of golf and our kids tried skeet shooting- all were very happy. Many of us had excursions organized by Dromoland. The drivers were courteous and knowledgeable. The thing that sets Dromoland apart from every other hotel that we have ever stayed at is the level of service. The staff are charming and amazingly helpful. They often anticipated our needs. The attention to detail was awesome. The rooms and common areas were meticulously clean. Turndown service was lovely. The housekeeping staff would even tidy up chargers and cords when they made their rounds. The wedding and our extended stay at Dromoland was a peak experience for our family and friends. We can't recommend the castle highly enough. We should have stayed a few more days just to relax.

It's a short walk or drive into the cute town of Ballyhahill, which has a post office, pub, and grocery store. One of the best parts of the cottage is its owners, Jim and Marie O'Brien, who live on the property close by on their dairy farm! They are the sweetest people and went above and beyond to make our trip in Ireland so special, and even included my family in one of their social events in town, which was probably the most "authentic" experience we had there. Marie had baked delicious scones for our arrival and a fire was going in the fireplace, and both she and Jim regularly checked on us to make sure everything was going well. We were here in November so did not spend much time outside, but in the summer it would be great to walk or ride bikes around the property and into town. The cottage itself is beautifully decorated and very up to date, with a washer/dryer, awesome steam shower and even a sauna! It comfortably sleeps 6 people in its 3 bedrooms. It has a pool table and TV/DVD player as well. Although the cottage does not have Wi Fi at the moment, that turned out to be one of the best parts because we were able to remove ourselves from constantly checking emails and just relax. If you do need internet, there are several libraries nearby. I miss this cute little cottage! If you are looking for a holiday home in Limerick, definitely stay here!

To be short, the service was excellent. The food was only fair and overpriced. There aren't many options in the area. In fairness, others with my group though very highly of the food, particularly the mussels. So, I'm between 3 and 4 stars for the food, with a solid 5 for service. If you do eat here, get the mussels.
