My husband and I found ourselves in perry. I had heard good things about a bar but when we showed up it was closed so we had to find something else. We ended up at Lou's Diner and it was a great experience! The parking lot was full when we arrived about 12:30. We sort of stood in limbo as we had no idea if we should seat ourselves or not....we were told to have a sit. We looked at the menus and decided on a coney dog for me and my husband's whole day was made when he was told he could have chicken fried steak. I watched the gal manning the grill just rip through orders like a pro while our waitress simultaneously slung food in every direction it needed to be in. I love watching well oiled restaurants work and grind it out. My coney dog was fried and smothered in chili and cheese as requested. It was great! My husband ate his entire breakfast of deep fried chicken fried steak with breakfast gravy, eggs, toast and hashbrowns. We tipped well because both those women were busting their asses and deserved it! read more

We would give Lou's 10 stars! Breakfast today was THE BEST we've ever had. Large portions but it was so good we ate every bite. We both liked the pancake a lot (fresh blueberries added), good bacon, eggs cooked just right, and the best golden crispy hash browns. French toast looked beautiful and was good. Everything is served steaming hot. If you come to Perry to stay at Hotel Pattee, a great nearby breakfast option is Lou's! read more

Went here two days in a row while visiting family and needed a break from the chaos for a bit. We were shocked because the place is not much to look at outside, but it is the type of place you always want to look for because they always have the best food. The food was outstanding! Blueberry pancakes are a hit. the price is right and is a good change of pace from the city eateries. People are nice here, friendly and helpful. If I could I would pack all these ladies and their kitchen and travel with them in my pocket. pull them out anytime I need a good meal. Best pancakes around! They are HUGE, fluffy and very good! The lady working the grill works her butt off, so definitely tip her as well as your server. Every meal we have had here was excellent and my parents always want breakfast here when they are in town. The place isn't too big and it's seat yourself, so you sometimes need to wait for a table to open, but the food is fresh, hot and amazing, so worth the wait! read more

Stopped into Lou's during a long road trip, based on Yelp reviews. Arrived minutes before their 2 pm closing time, but was welcomed with open arms after asking if it was cool to pony up to the counter still. This place is exactly what Yelp is all about, IMHO: hole in the wall (actually missed it driving by...exterior is not inviting and sign is tiny) with fantastic service, great people, and wonderful food. There was four of us. Two had pancakes, two had BLTs. The pancakes are flipped from heaven! They are infused with fresh blueberries and chocolate chips, and you can watch them being made in front of you. My buddy got the "stack of three" which is gigantic, heavy and requires specific techniques to even attempt (see picture). I wimped out getting just one, but it was the best, I think, I've ever had. The bacon served with my two side eggs was thick and perfectly crisp. The wives noted their BLTs were equally impressive (and, from bites we shared of pancakes, they contemplated a monthly 2.5 hour journey from home just to enjoy them again.) On top of all the food greatness, the people were a joy. Chatting, ribbing each other (apparently syrup techniques for The Stack are excessive for my single pancake...who knew?) and providing some local color to the town or Perry, IA. Spot on! Unfortunately, this is not a quick turnoff I-80 as you zoom through Iowan corn fields (maybe 20 minutes?), but it is worthy of contemplating a detour just to support and enjoy this rare gem. read more

Over the years, I have experienced many Restaurants all over the USA. So I can say, from long experience that Lou's Diner in Perry IA, is up there with the best of all these!! My first visit to Lou's was Sunday morning 28 July, 2019, on my way to the Forest Park Museum a mile South of Perry. Coming into Perry's town center crossroads, I asked a Gentleman waking his dog, where to find a Good Breakfast: He directed me to Lou's Diner. When I turned into Lou's, the building didn't look at all promising, but once inside, it's a nice homey Mom & Pop sort of place. I ordered that mornings "Special" called Farmer's Breakfast.. This was excellent in all respects!! For these reason, when my travel happened go thru Perry again, went back for breakfast at Lou's Tuesday 30 July. Lou's Diner, although not fancy, was clean, neat, orderly, and a pleasant experience, in all respects. AND My experience well fits the other 9 positive reviews now on this Yelp WebPage. Don't recommend this place if you're even slightly picky with food. My chicken strips came out raw, the cook "didn't know how that could happened". My friends food tasted/smelled rancid, couldn't eat it. Staff did not offer to remake the food, had to ask them to redo the chicken strips. Nor did they offer to give a discount to make things right. Just did not care at all. We left hungry. read more
