    Goat come to say hello!
    Rachel R.

I'm probably not the target audience for Gorgie City Farm, in that I'm not a 3 year old child or a parent with a 3 year old child. But it's a fun detour for childless adults nonetheless, if not quite the focus of your day. Set just off of Gorgie Road, if you didn't know it was there you could easily walk right by. Gorgie City Farm has been going for decades now, and whilst apparently I went as a toddler, I have no memories of it at all so as far as I was concerned I visited for the first time recently. As you enter there are wide, long hutches/cages full of chicken and ducks. When I say cages, I mean, they can easily move around, there's loads of space, there's just also chicken wire (?) to stop them from escaping! If, like me, you DO NOT like birds (particularly) poultry, then this is probably not going to be the highlight of your visit... but if their weird feet and wings and waddle don't completely weird you out, then go ahead, there's loads to look at. A little further along and you meet the goats. Very cute! They're keen to be fed (you can purchase multi-animal feed) and muzzle up, sticking their wee heads through the fencing. Then turn back on yourself and you'll find the stables with pigs happily rolling in the mud, and a mini field with sheep (rather pregnant sheep). These larger animals were easily my favourite part. I was decidedly less keen on the small pets room, which really only seemed to have some guinea pigs in it, mostly because I really dislike small pets. Guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, nah. You can keep those little rodents. There's not a huge amount to do (though there is a small play park and a café), but I imagine you could easily keep small children occupied here for a good couple of hours. If you're an adult, it's mostly a case of wandering in an out - particularly if you're an adult who doesn't like many animals beyond cats... but Gorgie City Farm is deserving of 4 stars really. It's a wonderful place to have within spitting distance of the city centre and definitely worth a look in if you're in the area.

Highly recommended if you don't know what to do with kids. Take them to Gorgie Farm and show how the bacon looks like when is still alive and where the chicken wings come from. Easy access by bus and by car. If you'll be early morning shouldn't have problem with parking a car, later can be tight because is only six parking spaces.

There's an old tractor for the kids to play on, my nephew loved it!

Gorgie farm is my top attraction in Edinburgh for children. It's small and a bit out of the way, so rarely crowded. The animals are well looked after, and seem happy in their surroundings, and it's nice to feel like you're in the countryside and walk around the barns to see them in their natural environment. The staff are really friendly, knowledgeable and patient with kids, there's a little play park, and a nice cafe. All in all, it's a lovely way to spend a few hours.

A Farm in the city! Brilliant. Cute place to walk about on a lunch break or if you have kids. Loads of animals! It's a working farm and they grow produce too! They have a cute cafe were you can get homemade scones and cake. They sandwiches and savoury foods liked nice and simple. Cheap . Good to sponsor this local organisation!

I often wondered why Gorgie Road smelled like shit. Turns out because there is a farm on it! Who knew! So this is where mothers bring their children in their buggies during the week. I was intrigued by the whole city farm idea, especially when Edinburgh is actually a pretty small city which is surrounded by farms. But it has its purpose. Entry is by donation and as this place is run by volunteers and funded by donations, it is worth giving up a few quid. There are chickens, goats, a sheep and lots of small animals. I think it is more geared towards very young kids, as older kids will be all like "a sheep, so what?" There is also a produce stand selling various produce from the farm. It perhaps isn't as exciting as a day out at the zoo, but it is cheap, there is a bus stop outside and will entertain the young kids for a few hours.

    View towards the pet lodge.

First, I have no clue what a city farm should look like, as I've either lived around farms or had farms easily accessible to me. The most recent "city farm" I can compare this to is Sonnenhof Farm in Stuttgart, Germany, which uses the same model (farm in the city, animals to pet and feed, et cetera). This comparison is where I draw my three-star review for Gorgie Farm. I think the idea is wonderful and I'm sure this is probably one of the only farm experiences some city kids will get. The staff here was very nice and helpful, especially the veterinarian student who was very patient with my children who wanted to hold the rats, guinea pigs, and chinchillas ad nauseum. I was a little taken aback that the animal feed kiosks weren't filled when the place opened; I figured at 20p a pop, those machines would be filled to the brim, hoping to sucker people in to paying to feed the animals (or tourists such as myself). However, after I contacted the staff, the kiosks were filled up and the 20p pieces which were burning a hole in my pocket were soon exchanged for animal feed. There is a playground for the kids, but it is geared for the 3 and under crowd and is a little run down. Again, my previous experience with German playgrounds are probably adding bias to my perception of the playground, and it seemed like the young Scottish kids were enjoying themselves. I was a little disappointed at the size and cleanliness of the animal pens, especially being almost first thing in the morning. I could see it being 5pm and the staff being a little overworked keeping up with the animals (as in, they are pooping a lot), but it was only 11am and the pens/stalls weren't very clean. I'm trying to keep in mind that Gorgie Farm is staffed by volunteers (which is why I donated), but the fact remains the upkeep of the farm could use some tending to. I thought the pens/stalls were a little small, and while I'm trying to keep the size limitations of the city in mind, I think the layout of the farm could be more efficiently organized to allow the animals to have a larger space while still keeping the same amount of animals (or even more). Overall, I like the concept and think it does what it is supposed to do...expose kids to farm animals, teach them about different types of animals, and give them a chance to hold some of these animals. I think the execution, however, is somewhat lacking. Still, it's a great place to take the kids (either native Scots or tourists).

I love Gorgie City Farm and so do my children! I have four, aged between 13 years old and 23 months old and they all still enjoy our visits. The farm is well laid out, has a variety of animals and has a lovely petting area for small animals. The tractor has always been a firm favourite, as has the newly revamped play park. You can also buy some veg etc from a small 'stall' within the farm.

comemeet the residents, the friendliest one can be nest weeks sandwiches if you like

Awful. Aww look at all the cute spring animals, yeah think what happens next when they aint so cute and spring is long past sprung.. this place is as bad as any other animals loose out so people can coin in on,or go aww at the cute factor. Their butchered residents are quietly available if you enquire so you can both play with you food and pet it.

If you live locally or come to the city often, sure, make your way to the zoo eventually. They have some great events: social for new parents to meet other new parents, afternoon teas, photography workshops, and more. They are home to more than 2,500 animals including: camels, monkeys, pelicans, zebras, highland cows (...obviously), giraffes (a four back of bachelors named Arrow, Gerald, Fennessy, and Gilbert), a red panda, tigers, meerkats, a bear, a very large penguin pool with LOTS of gentoo, king, and rockhopper penguins (you can watch them live on the zoo's website!), flamingos (their oldest one was born in 1961!), and more. Unfortunately, you won't see all of them when you visit: I would say about 30% of them weren't there (for various reasons: rehoming, new structures being built, vet visits, it was the wrong time of day, etc.) when I came. There is, however - and this won't make sense unless you've seen it - an unexpectedly LARGE dinosaur presence here. IYKYK. Thankful for the conservation work they do here and in the protection of endangered species around the world, but I'm not sure this is a spot I need to have repeat visit at.

They have various animals that I have never seen before like lamas, rheas, wallabies and even a highland cow! A newborn baby donkey was born on Monday and it was so cute when I saw it while we whizzed past on the train. You even get to feed baby lambs in the petting area which is the cutest thing ever! The fortress is good and has large freefall chutes going to the bottom which are really fast and I actually had to hold onto the sides to slow me down a bit! There are rat tunnels (which are very dark and scary), nets, bridges, ropes and a ramp to the top if you feel lazy. On the 4 towers, there are cannons which you can shoot tennis balls out of. There are 3 go-kart tracks, 2 of which are for small children but the one behind the fortress is for hardcore teenage drivers, like me! There is also mini golf (tokens are required to hire balls) and an indoor ball shooting arena. The prices are a bit ridiculous for the size of the place. It is about £15 per head and you will need to pay even more once you get inside (the tearoom, shops, animal feeding dispensers and golf ball dispensers charge you.) The tearoom was actually quite nice for a theme park café but the prices were quite steep! I was charged £4 for a bottle of Irn Bru and a honeycomb traybake. Ridiculous prices. The food was good though and it was the first time I had ever tasted Irn Bru. It doesn't taste as orangey as it looks. It's like Fanta with a weird vanilla twist to it. The toilets are straight ahead as you enter and they were clean with no bad smells, plenty of soap and hot water that was actually hot. The Dyson Airblade dryers worked fine too. I will be back at East Links in the summer because I didn't actually get to see everything in one day! The sweet shop on the way out is not to be missed too.

The onsite shop is small but lovely with a small range of reasonably priced items. There is a huge barn with tables for picnic consuming which is a blessing with Scotland's weather! We really enjoyed our visit and would go back any time. Highly recommended!
