All I can say is damn I was really surprised at how much better rest stops are nowadays from what I remember as a kid! This one is climate controlled, clean, recently renovated, and felt safe. I mean we were there in the middle of the day, and I'm not sure I'd stop at any rest stop in the middle of the night, but this one was a good one. While I'm still more likely to stop at a gas station most times, if I need a stop and am near this one I wouldn't hesitate to stop here again.

About six years ago I…read morestayed at the Holiday Inn Express that is across the street and really enjoyed having this Petro nearby for easy access to bottled water and Starbucks. Back then it really was an exemplary stop. Now, the Starbys is gone, there is no replacement, and it really feels aged and lackluster. Does it have decent bathrooms? Yes. Does it have basic necessities? sure. So, it's not a total loss, just kind of sad knowing what it was in the past and the current state of it. Because of this, it's no longer a place we will likely plan on stopping unless we need to in the future.

Firstly most of everything closes down at night so you are left with just a convenience store and a gas station. No food and nowhere to sit and no outlets. Which is one of the reasons I was coming here in the first place. Secondly the cops are patrolling all over here, which I suppose is good because it helps you stay safe, but they seemed especially curious about my presence here, and I felt a little creeped out. On the other hand I'm glad that they are keeping people safe while they are sleeping, and I really do like the layout of these rest areas that are in the middle of the highway. They can be a little treacherous for re-entry because you're entering and leaving the fast lane, but I do think it's a great idea to have the plaza be right in the middle and accessible from both sides.

When there's 40 miles between this rest stop and the next gas station on a major traveled highway, you would think that they would do better in making sure that their pumps are repaired and working because people don't stop here for tourism and they certainly don't stop here because the food is good. They stop here for one reason and one reason only to gas up use the restroom and get back on the road. They should focus more on making sure that the needs of the customers are met then just trying to see how many people they can get to come inside. Jim and Lori, the owners, are so friendly and hospitable. They keep a clean ranch! The showers are the nicest and cleanest of anyplace we've ever stayed and include the the little things that make camp showering easier for someone with mobility impairment: shelf for shampoo, grab bars, good wide bench, etc. Clean laundry room. Storm shelter available. Very quiet except for a little bit of traffic sound from the highway. It's unfortunate about the negative review below. But I can say that the concrete driveway is brand new and they do like keeping their place clean. I don't think I'd want big hunks of mud being left on the driveway either! If you plan to have regularly muddy tires, then the Love's RV stop with all the noise of the Jake-brakes is probably a better choice for everyone involved. I look forward to staying the next time I'm in the area, and as always, I'm glad to support small, local businesses.

We got to stay twice at the Salina KOA on our way to St. Louis from Denver. Salina is almost…read moreexactly halfway and made for a great stop both going to St. Louis and coming back! We stayed in site #048 both times and was a great choice. Our site was a long pull-through with full hookups and had plenty of room for our 30ft class C and toad. Because we were only staying for one night, we didn't disconnect the toad. Our site was fairly level and nicely appointed with a large patio, furniture and lawn decorations. There is lots of grass and everything is nicely maintained. The entire campground is nice and clean and the upkeep from the owners shows. Lots of little Wizard of Oz themed signs and statues are around and it makes it a fun place to walk around. Our site was on "Tornado Alley" street! (A bit more on that later!) There is a huge Adirondack chair up front for fun pictures! Lots of mature shade trees helped with the heat and although we didn't use it, the pool looked inviting. The Kamp K9 is great here! Nice and big and covered in lush grass really helped our two labs burn off some energy from the road. The store is well stocked and we ordered pizza one night and they delivered it right to our site! We would not hesitate to stay here again and look forward to it! We camped at Salina KOA Holiday in a Motorhome. FYI Summertime thunderstorms in Kansas are no joke. Had a big boomer come through late at night our first night. A bit scary. On our return stay, we got caught in a tornadic supercell between Lawrence and Topeka! Seriously scary! The campground does provide cool text alerts!

Upon arrival we we told they didn't have one of our spots booked and made us pay. We did and just figured we would call the day day or on the way back south to get it straight. After three emails and four calls the lady actually acted like I did something wrong. Even said "well after all this time I can give a full refund! Really! I argued and she gave me the full refund but then charged me a 4% cancellation fee!
