Instead without approval they being the team decided to put a Nitrous oxide mask over my nose however, I was not getting relaxed one bit nor was my anxiety dissipating. Apparently, this company will file an insurance claim for the cost of an exam when you have them provide an estimate - they cannot provide an estimate without and exam. Not only did I pay out of pocket for the estimate, they also made a claim to my insurance for additional funds. The insurance claim is also money out of my pocket for the future procedure because my policy has a yearly maximum. I can tell you that the other two places I received an estimate did not charge. Needless to say, I'll be having the procedure done elsewhere, will avoid this company in the future and will be sure my dentist knows that they charge for estimates.

Unfortunately, the surprise came anyway, and it came in the form of a completely different, significantly higher bill. When I reached out for clarification, Christy Loudermill, who I was told was the "billing manager" (which already confused me, considering her title is practice administrator), handled the situation in a way that was honestly shocking to me. Her response came off cold, dismissive, and completely uninterested in the fact that their mistake had real consequences for me. Instead of taking ownership or offering real help, the explanation was basically a quick brush-off labeled as "human error," as if that magically excused everything. What made it worse was the tone -- like I was the inconvenience for asking why I was suddenly expected to pay far more than what Christy herself had confirmed. There was no sense of accountability, no recognition of the office's own miscommunication, and absolutely zero acknowledgment of the impact this caused. The entire situation left me feeling like accuracy and transparency simply weren't priorities for her. And the fact that someone in the office even referred to her as the "billing manager" just added to the mess. When the people working there can't even get titles straight, it says a lot about how disorganized things are behind the scenes. My opinion? If this is how the practice administrator handles problems -- with confusion, deflection, and an attitude that the patient should just swallow the difference -- then the rest of the office is likely following the same example. Son had wisdom teeth extraction. They did not supply a quote until 2 days prior to procedure, even…read morethough I requested one twice, several weeks in advance. Any time I needed to call them, had to call multiple times due to no one answering phone. On day of procedure before starting, discussed an impacted tooth and that they could expose and move said tooth since they were already in his mouth. They never said it would have an additional charge until after the procedure was done then said they would advise of amount after sending to insurance. 1.5 weeks later I get a bill for nearly $1,300.00 which was more than I paid for the 4 wisdom teeth to be removed. They refused to discount the additional charges, which were not covered by insurance. They only supplied a little gauze for after care. Other surgeon offices provide enough gauze for full aftercare as well as ice packs. I was treated as if this place only wants your money, they do not care about the patient or treating people like human beings. They also switched the location from where I made the appointment, but no one told me this until the day before when they called to go over what to do before coming in.

My bad experience started before I even had my first appointment. There were red flags there I should not have ignored. I moved a few months ago and was looking to establish a new dentist here. I am a senior woman who has good oral health, all of her teeth, and only two amalgam fillings (one when a teenager and another in my early twenties.) Knowing my insurance would cover a cleaning and bite-wing x-rays (with an in-network dentist) I was hoping I could get that done in December with only a few business days available, and get a new dentist established. I thought I would give it a try. The first red flag (in retrospect) was that they could get me in right away. I did first look at reviews online, and Olathe South Dentistry has good reviews on Yelp, Google, and their Facebook page. The next red flag was when I walked in to ask about insurance and costs. Next year my dental plan will be different, and I was asking how much a cleaning would cost if I paid out of pocket. Also, how much for bite-wing x-rays and exam by the doctor. They would never tell me. Our conversation circled around and around, them saying they would run it through insurance first, as that would provide a discount. And I kept telling them that my insurance next year will not have dental coverage. However, I could pay a fee upfront (maybe $119.00) and then get a discount on cleanings and other work. But I could never get an answer to a simple question of how much does it cost to get my teeth cleaned. ***Next red flag. Even though my mouth does not show any indication of gum disease or inflammation, they insisted I take their free saliva test. They assured me it wouldn't cost anything.They showed me a print out page with lots of colors and all the vital organs telling me that the inflammation would basically destroy my body, and insisted I get, right then and there, some kind of laser treatment to kill the bacteria under the gum. I declined. As it turns out, they did bill that to my insurance, and insurance denied it. It required a three way call with my insurance company, me, and the dental office. *** In addition to the bite-wing x-rays and panoramic x-rays, they took a Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). When I commented I'd never seen a panoramic x-ray where one has to stand up...no one clarified and explained to me that this was a different and additional procedure. Which I didn't need. I came in for a cleaning. I only learned what it was when I looked at the coding used for the excessive billing. (The CBCT provides detailed 3D images of teeth, bones, soft tissues, and nerve paths in the head and neck, primarily used in dentistry for precise treatment planning in areas like dental implants, orthodontics, oral surgery (impacted teeth, jaw tumors), root canals, TMJ issues, and airway analysis for sleep apnea, offering higher accuracy than traditional X-rays with lower radiation.) ***Next red flag: I was told that the crack by one of the fillings (that I've had for over a decade) was full of bacteria and needed an immediate CROWN before all the root was gone. They make the crowns on location and can do it THE VERY SAME DAY! I told them I would think about it, and I made the mistake of making an appointment in a couple of days to come back and have the crown done. But they don't like when patients ask questions. I simply asked what was going to be done in my mouth, what to expect, and if a rubber dam would be used since they would be drilling into an amalgam filling. I was told no rubber dam would be used, it wasn't necessary, that the amount of mercury was totally harmless. She went and got another dentist, and I was told, as I'm laying back in the dental chair: "We see red flags with you. Just like you need to feel comfortable with your dentist, we need to feel comfortable with you. And we don't feel comfortable, so you'll have to find another dentist". That was followed up by a letter delivered by FED EX terminating our "relationship". I did call my previous dentist to ask her opinion, and the first thing she asked was "Is the (cracked) tooth bothering you?" I said "no". She went on to say she had the benefit of knowing my mouth and teeth for over a decade, and she said unless I wanted to be proactive, there was no reason to have a crown.

I'm in the Army going to the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth for this year…read more They don't allow us to miss very much class time, so finding a "one stop shop" for my dental needs was extremely important. The dental office on post lost my trust after the dentist there and his assistant (who are super nice BTW) dropped instruments during my appointment to get a temporary crown. Not only that, but after 3 days the temporary crown fell out when I was eating a sandwich (not something that was even that hard)!! Additionally, when I called the Fort Leavenworth clinic about it, they said that having a temporary crown fall out after 3 days was normal! I just don't see that as being the case. All these shenanigans was after getting referred for a root-canal that should've been followed within 3-6 weeks with the temporary crown. Fort Leavenworth forced me into the above appointment 7-8 weeks after the root-canal and basically told me "tough" at their front desk and to "just be careful" with the tooth that just received the root-canal. Needless to say, that's when I started wondering if I could go somewhere else. The on post dental clinic is severely lacking in customer service at their front desk and a level of competence that I'm comfortable with. After calling TRICARE (insurance) for my procedures, they gave me a list that I whittled down to a couple places. I eventually chose Olathe Smiles Dentistry because they could do all of the procedures I needed AND do them all in one day with NO follow-up appointments (pending any unanticipated complications). The dental clinic (Ebony) on post very begrudgingly set up the referral for me. No one likes confrontation, but I am SO glad I put an end to my suffering at their hands. Olathe Smiles Dentistry was great from when I checked in (Ebony screwed up the insurance referral paperwork that Olathe Smiles front desk ladies fixed PROACTIVELY), to the assistants and the doctors. First, I saw Trish who works with the periodontist Dr. McKenzie. She got me x-rays and helped out during my root lengthening. "Root lengthening" really should be called something else because it's when they cut out gums from around your tooth and sometimes grind down bone. I was nervous going in. However, both Trish and Dr. McKenzie were hilarious and their conversations REALLY set me at ease and took my mind off of the procedure. Immediately following that appointment (same day) I moved from one room to another for the permanent crown to be put in. Dr. Rawalt and Benita (I think) were the ones helping with that. They were both great as well! I can't express how thankful I am to go to one place for fixing the shenanigans related to that one tooth. Even with a sore jaw right now, I am extremely relieved to have gotten the procedures done by a staff that was not only VERY customer service oriented, they showed empathy through distracting and hilarious conversation (anthropology, Star Wars, toddler hyjinx...), and they were competent as well as efficient.
