Spent a day in Athens while on a roadtrip recently and as always, I have to check out a local record shop. Low Yo Yo is a brief walk away from the historic 40 Watt Club and near plenty of dining and drinking choices. While a relatively small store, it's packed wall to wall with a lot of records! I was particularly impressed by the great selection of catalogue titles they have--I always have a running list of records I'm looking for and often these are not present in my local shops. Many, if not most, of what I looked for WAS present here. Often a new title, shrinkwrapped and priced accordingly--but fairly/within market range. They did have some original pressings and used items, but overall their used items seem to be vastly outranked by their new items. However, I can't quite be sure of that as beyond the row of newly arrived used items all others are filed with their new counterparts. I like the overall organization of this store--by genre, by artist, and often within an artist's section all of the solo and sideprojects of a group are present and accounted for. There's also a pretty sweet local artists section (including REM) near the register. Friendly service, cool shop, would definitely make this a regular stop if I lived in the area. read more

I love this store. They have a lot of stuff. The CD's are bit difficult to peruse as they are placed quite high. But they have a stool for your convenience. My only complaint is that I wish they were in a larger space.. read more

No visit to Athens is complete without a visit to Low YoYo Stuff Records. Stuffed to the gills with vinyl, CDs, cassette tapes, recorded music paraphernalia and band collectibles, you never know what you might find at YoYo. Organized enough to help you find something specific, but loose enough to let you explore for hidden gems, I always leave with something unexpected and enjoyable. The staff is super knowledgeable in so many genres and periods, and they often play eclectic or obscure music that broadens my horizons (I bought the jazz record being played on my last visit). I remember making a detour into town and stopping here on a business trip several years ago. I also remember buying several LP's that I was very pleased with. This latest visit was not as productive. I'm into used vinyl, almost exclusively. One thing about this store that I didn't care for is the fact that their new and used LP's are not segregated. So I had to sort through a bunch of new stuff to find the used ones. Perhaps it was merely the timing of my visit. But I left empty-handed. That doesn't happen often. Overall, I wasn't thrilled. I likely will not bother driving into downtown Athens again. JMHO. read more

I am part of the younger audience that collects vinyl records and I was expecting to not find much records considering most stores sell older genres and music. Fortunately, this store had a good selection especially for me since I enjoy a lot of Alternative and the selection was good. Not amazing but pretty good. Would definitely come again! Also, I decided to try to sell and trade some vinyl. I do kind of feel ripped off but I guess the trade was as fair as it can be but I wished for slightly more money. I was made to feel very unwelcome. I have some chronic medical conditions that I choose to medicate using marijuana. It helps me live a normal life without having to take dangerous, and addicting prescription drugs. Apparently the cashier doesn't approve of the smell of my medication, because he repeatedly complained to any customer he could about how "someone smells like a weed air freshener." And how he might need to open the because "someone definitely has weed on them." I was only in the store 10 minutes before I got the message that I wasn't wanted there. So I decided to take my money to wuxtry where I was treated with respect. In the past I've had great experiences at this store. That's why I drove from Atlanta just to do my Xmas shopping here. It was really disappointing to drive all that way just to be passive aggressively discriminated against. I understand that marijuana can have a pretty pungent smell that some people aren't a fan of, and that's fine. But if you're going to work at a record store you should probably expect some of your paying customers to smell like weed every once in a while. It's almost 2019 time to stop being a prude. read more

It's a sunny Sunday afternoon in late spring. I'm walking down Washington St to Low Yo-Yo, past bars that are still sleeping in and shops that wish they could. I wander into the store which is playing the Beach Boys' "Don't Back Down", a song I've heard a zillion times, though this version ends with a verse I've never heard before. A gentleman, obviously a regular, wanders in and starts going into full detail about a 1970s Elvis bootleg he's just listened to, comparing it to similar bootlegs of the era. I grab a Sun Ra album and chat about the new Neil Young "Tonight's The Night" live reissue. I walk back out into the sunny Sunday afternoon with some great new music. This is about as good as it gets. Don't assume from some of those legacy names that this is some golden-oldies shop. Lots of good, weird stuff found here too. The employees here know their proverbial onions and are just at home talking about Japanese noise bands as they are, um, 1970s Elvis bootlegs. They're friendly folks too - if you're buying something cool they're going to talk to you about it. I don't live in Athens but I've shopped here sporadically for a good 20+ years. This is one of a handful of places that just _is_ Athens to me. You can always trust a Beefheart reference! read more

I was in Athens for an afternoon, and as a record collector I decided to check out Low Yo Yo Stuff. They Had all of the records you could ever want in an endless supply of crates, and if you couldn't find something, they were happy to help you in any way. I bought a few records and Jeremy at the counter slashed a few bucks off the total. Love the style and atmosphere of the shop and hope to come again. This is a real almost-hidden gem of a vinyl-record/CD store toward the western edge of the downtown grid in Athens. Thanks to Clocked (great burgers, fries and shakes) next door and a couple of other places, the area gets foot and car traffic now, whereas not long ago it was pretty quiet. The store is a bit like Wuxtry used to be, i.e. somewhat cramped and chock-full of merchandise, but the used-record selection is wide-ranging and good and you've got some chance of finding rare items. Just bring money (maybe not quite as much as would be needed for Wuxtry, but more than you might guess for a low-wage college town). Well worth a look. read more

Great, weird little record store. Interesting selection of vinyl, obscure and local stuff, too. The staff is super knowledgable and is *not* too cool for school, very willing to answer questions and talk music. they also sell used record players and you can get a good deal. would be 5 stars but - Don't expect to find anything mainstream - to the point of semi-aggressiveness - like new releases by better known yet influential artists. But they will order it for you if you'd like. Hours are a little on the sparse side, too - which is understandable, but occasionally a little inconvenient. read more

Was in Athens from Florida last week and stopped by the store. Gotta say I have been to many record stores in my life but never loved a store more. Great employees and a great selection. Even better prices. Found a few gems I had been looking for awhile and great prices. Any vinyl lover should stop in and check them out. They are everything I love with a record store.
