It's located in a residential neighborhood, south of Sheboygan, that is off the beaten path. The first thing you see is a log fence along Evergreen Road. In the trompe-l'œil sculpture, you'll find a Native American family, a momma bear climbing a tree and her two cubs playing in a tree. Park your car in the lot off Evergreen Road and walk back up to the road to take a closer look at the fence. The amount of detail that James Tellen put into his work is evident in the logs. You'll find a Native American family, a momma bear about to climb a tree, and her cubs playing on the tree top. Near the large sculpted tree (go ahead and stick your head in the large opening!) you'll find a box with an information sheet that describes the sculptures you'll be seeing as you walk the path into the woods. Where did this all come from? James Tellen worked in a Sheboygan furniture factory where he painted stripes and other details on the products. When not working, he studied painting under local artisans and later worked with other media. During the depression, production slowdowns gave him time to pursue his artwork. This log cottage and land, south of town, was a family refuge and became a place for him to pursue his artwork. During the winter, he would work on sculpting heads in the basement of his home. In Spring and Summer, he attached the heads to armatures that supported his concrete sculptures. Tellen died in 1957, leaving a legacy of 30 such sculptures at the family cottage. The Kohler Foundation acquired the sculpture garden in 1988 and in 2001, the collection was gifted to the John Michael Kohler Art Center. The Tellen environment is the first addition to the JMKAC collection that is off premises. (The JMKAC is in downtown Sheboygan.) A sculpture of a young Abraham Lincoln, splitting a log, shows Tellen's incredible dedication to detail. It is reminiscent of Clarence Shaler's "Lincoln the Dreamer" sculpture on the campus of Ripon College. Tellen tried to depict everyday people, and the young Lincoln is represented as an everyday neighbor rather than as the statesman that we all remember. The Tellen collection is open dawn to dusk daily. It is one the art environments restored by the Kohler Foundation and listed as part of Wandering Wisconsin. This is a unique park in Manitowoc County. There is a natural limestone escarpment that runs along…read morethe West Twin River. The park itself is well maintained. There are natural caves that have formed in the limestone escarpment. Some are just big enough to peer into, and a couple you can wiggle into for a few feet. The caves are marked so you know which one you're looking at. The park has some good hiking trails. This is the main reason I come here. There is a nice trail above the escarpment. That one winds around several acres of wooded landscape. The lower ones follow the escarpment to each cave and continues along the river for the better part of a mile. If you're into hiking, this is a nice 4 mile hike.

The grounds were extremely well kept. They have different events throughout the year such as dinners on the property Fairy garden making and Halloween. If you love whimsical as well as the botanical gardens this is the place for you. We are so glad we found it and can't wait to go back for more adventures. They are adding new areas to be coming in the near future so there's very good reason to come back and enjoy it again and again. Great for families and any buddy who loves botanical gardens.. If your kids or you love reading it's definitely the place to go. They have childrens books throughout in little cubbies marked and they are laminated so you can sit in the gardens and read. They also have a picnic area where you can bring your own food and look over some of the grounds. We spent a couple hours going through so definitely a fun day trip.

We didn't factor the holiday and the state park was incredibly busy (all lots were full and parking was extending down the road. We decided to check out some local city parks instead. Enter Deland Park. Deland Park is a large Sheboygan city park with a little something for all park goers. There are plenty of benches to linger on, a large expanse of beach for a little sun and water fun, play areas, a lighthouse, and fishing areas. On our trip, we opted for the gorgeous lake views and a walk up the breakwater to the lighthouse. The first 25 yards or so up the breakwater path are uneven but if you can get past that, it's all smooth pavement from there. At the lighthouse we were afforded a gorgeous view of the beach and sailboats sailing across the lake. Stunning!

The real attraction here is the walk on the north Manitowoc jetty. On your way to the lighthouse you will come upon a water impoundment that can be rife with shore birds. A little further on is the Paws and Play dog park. Beyond is the walk to the lighthouse. If it is windy and the surf is up you might skip the lighthouse walk because you'll get wet or worse. All in all a nice area to spend a couple of hours. Bring your binoculars and snacks. On a sunny day this can be a great day in the making. On a cold, rainy day, not so much. People in Manitowoc are usually friendly. Take the time to chat, you might make a new friend.
