Recently I started attending A2 consultation services for issues I was having with food. I really…read moreenjoyed working with my counselor there. The problem comes with how they handled their finances and customer service. Some things got screwed up with my insurance, so they said that they could not see me until I paid my bill of $200. I understood this, although I was very frustrated by it; my therapist wanted me to learn how to eat intuitively, and the first part of that was eating whatever I wanted to. This will matter in later. It took me a little time to figure out what was wrong with the insurance, and then I called A2 back and let them know what the issue was. All they had to do was re-run the insurance, which they had said before was not a problem. It took them TWO AND A HALF MONTHS and several phone calls for them to fix the issue with the finances, and when it finally was fixed, they could not even be bothered to call and tell me, which I had requested that they do. So because of all of this, I've been doing the first stage of my intuitive eating process longer than I needed to, and as a result, I've gained a significant amount of weight which has not improved my mental status as my eating issues go. Additionally, as they would not let me speak to my psychiatrist, I had to wean myself off of the medication he'd put me on, which meant that as my body coped, I was depressed for several weeks and had severe difficulties getting my schoolwork done. Note: It's not their fault that I had to wean myself off of the meds; that happened during the time in which I was trying to work things out on my end with my insurance. It IS their fault that I was depressed and untreated because by then, my issues with the insurance were fixed and I was waiting on them. I also do not understand why my doctor was not allowed to write me a prescription to tide me over while I was working things out with the insurance. To top things off, things are FINALLY fixed with the finances, and my therapist is now leaving A2 to work somewhere else. That's not their fault at all, but it really doesn't help matters and I don't want to stay there at all now that she's gone. So now I'm left 30lbs heavier, I've no idea how to process to the next part of my intuitive eating process on my own, and since I'm still actually pretty sure that they screwed up the finances entirely that it's possible that THEY owe ME money. (My insurance when they fixed things said that they would reimburse the place for my co-pays; since I'd paid all of my co-pays in full this actually means I should have gotten money back. That's the way it's worked with other doctors in the past). If there's even the slightest chance that things could get screwed up with your insurance, do not go to this place. Also, don't leave messages for their finances' person; either she ignores them or their answering machine is broken, because they claimed that they never got my multiple messages from different phones.

Finding a good match in a therapist can be very difficult. Over the years, I have been to quite a…read morefew therapists but never felt I really connected with them -- or they with me. There have been some I liked as people, but in terms of a therapist, so many have just missed the mark. They either had their own agendas or they really just didn't listen to what I was saying. (Or, in my younger days, the fact that I wouldn't say anything.) This is not the case with Ginger Houghton at Bright Spot Counseling. I have been working with Ginger for a couple of years now. Her approach is very gentle and accepting. I've never felt judged or shamed, and she is generous with her sprinkling of kind words and praise. One of the best things Ginger did for me was recognize -- and label -- my anxiety. While I knew I was anxious, I'd never had a professional put a name to it and then offer a real, solid method to deal with it. She suggested medication but without judgment; she did not say "You should be medicated". Rather, she approached it gently, saying, "I don't know how you feel about this, and some people are definitely against it, but meds are one way to go." This is Ginger's approach -- it's gentle, and made through suggestion rather than through directives. She never says "Do this!", but rather, "What do you think about this?" Or, "What would happen if you tried that?" She never judges -- just suggests -- and she gives me the space to reject her ideas without feeling that she's rejecting me. Working with Ginger is truly a two way street; she listens, she asks questions, and she lets me ask questions. She doesn't have that stand-offish aura that some therapists have; rather, going to see her is like going to visit a friend, except that all the attention is on me. But, unlike other people I've been to, Ginger is willing to reveal a thing or two about herself, which makes it easy to relate to and trust her. Bright Spot Counseling offers many different methods of therapy. So far, I have just done the regular talk therapy, but once the weather gets nicer, I am planning to venture into (out to?) the walk and talk therapy. Just the fact that they recognize that therapy is not a one-size-fits-all proposition demonstrates how in tune they really are with their clients. Bright Spot Counseling truly is a bright spot in my life.
