Ships were en route to or from the USA or Canadian ports on Grand Manan Island; part of the Canadian Fundy group of islands. It is a part of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park The lighthouse is not open to the public however visitors can walk around it and enjoy a picnic site overlooking the narrows with the picturesque town of Lubec, ME, in the background. It is also visible from the US side, as you can see from my photos. At least as of March 2021, the border between the United States and Canada is closed to non-essential traffic. Today started at 6:00 am to catch a 7:45 am boat departure with plan to see whales, seals,…read moredolphins, Bald Eagles, the lighthouse area we walked yesterday-the walking area to get to it is submerged in water at high tide today; ride through it and experience The Old Sows Pen (huge whirlpools where ingoing and outgoing tides intersect. Amazing 2 hour trip aboard The Lorna Dione Small boat with 6 passengers and our Captain Ralph. Man did Captain Ralph deliver !!! We saw 3 species of whales up close, heard their blow and got great pictures. Riding through the cut at lighthouse (we walked yesterday) was amazing and the whirlpools were thrilling. Captain Ralph made sure we got the whirlpool experience, including turning off motors and us going around 180 degrees .

I was lucky enough to go out on a…read moreperfect summer day--sunny, with a nice summery breeze--and there were enough of us to need two boats for the 1:30pm tour. You can pack in a good-sized crowd, but it's not a gigantic boat and you'll be making friends with nearby seatmates and chatting up the crew in no time. Once you're out of the harbor area you'll cruise out toward Campobello Island, as well as a lot of smaller ones dotting the bay--and you're pretty much in Canadian waterways the whole time. We saw minke whales, porpoises, seals, and bald eagles. The lighthouse view of the East Quoddy Head Light is gorgeous, and once you round that tip of the island the much cooler air from the Bay of Fundy wafts in and drops the temperature. Be sure to bring a jacket or sweatshirt along with your sunscreen and water! Our crew also pulled up a lobster trap on the return part of the trip and it was fun getting a look at harvesting in action. And the crew members have lots of info and stories about the area, so just ask! Great way to spend the afternoon.

I liked that there are steps at various levels, so you can get a range of different views of the rocks and water. Plus it's a great place to get your steps in (if thats important to ya). I really enjoyed this spot on our way out leaving the park. Beautiful scenery to enjoy nature. One could spend a few minutes here or a couple of hours here taking it all in. It was not high or low tide, so I did not get to here the "thunder" but still really cool to look at. According to the internet: "Thunder Hole is a popular inlet known for the loud thunder like boom and spray created when the waves crash into a narrow sea cave. The sound and spray are most dramatic 1 to 2 hours before high tide, but it also interesting at low tide for a closer look at the cliffs." While it was cloudy and chilly on my visit, I still had a great time with my group. Enjoy!

The naturalist on board gives significant information and points of interest for all the different wildlife that you see , birds , porpoises , whales , seals , anything that comes up , they know a good amount of information and they relay it over a loudspeaker system. The cabin of the boat is very comfortable with large, comfortable chairs and tables.There is a deck with a galley where they serve drinks and snacks. They also sell hats and gloves if you're cold and drammine , if you feel sick. The admonition to dress really warm is for real , for real. It was about seventy degrees at the dock , but it was about forty degrees out in the middle of the ocean. We really did need winter gear to be comfortable outside from the deck. The deck has seating all around and safe rails.So you can stand against the rails , the boat speeds along , so you can get to a whale quickly , and then it slows down to a stop when there is a sighting of any kind of significant wildlife. When I felt sick after a good hour of a bumpy rough sea, which we were warned about , they immediately brought me ginger ale and a seasick bag. Unfortunately , on this trip , we only saw the back of a humpback whale , and then we saw a deceased whale. They took many photos and alerted researchers to come and find it so that it could be determined or studied how it might have passed away. They are very responsible and responsive to the safety and health of the sea life. What time arriving back at the dock?We were immediately emailed vouchers that we can take three years to use. That in and of itself is a guarantee to me that they care about their customers and want their patrons to have a lovely, well watching excursion.

Clothing, Long pants, with long sleeves shirt windbreaker jacket maybe even a hat, Sunglasses. Pack shorts to change into upon return temperatures will be warmer. *Trip out to sea is windy and chilly. Point here is to feel comfortable. 3. You can pack your own lunch and bring a backpack. There is a Galley on board the ship for food purchases. 4. Bring a camera (i brought my Insta 360 5X camera and a 3 foot selfie stick) and Cellphone and be ready to take pictures. *I have Boost Mobile and I did get cell service out there. *All in all be expected to pay a little over $100.00 per person for slightly over 5 hours ride. Two boats can go out at the same time depending on the crowds. Lines will be long and they will take your picture before you board, (A novelty idea by them to get you to buy a photo of yourselves after debarking). We opted out politely. *Note: We went to the top floor which was all seats. Expect to be chilly. Standing by the rails on top minimal room. Downstairs more room but more crowded, an enclosed area, 3 co-ed bathrooms and Galley. *Final thoughts: Having a physical crew member narrative at top on the microphone was actually a good way to pass the time and learn a few things about what we would encounter. You can stay in the keeper's house at a privately run decommissioned lighthouse that still operates. It is on an island that is a short 8-10 minute boat ride from the Cutler Town boat ramp. Terry, the keeper in residence, is a wealth of knowledge in the lighthouse and community. Why? Because he operated the lighthouse for the Coast Guard over 40 years ago and returned to assist with it after it was decommissioned. How cool is that? Priceless. A small private island, with a huge character, it is amazing to me how this place has been overlooked for so long. If you like lighthouses, and let's be honest who doesn't?, this is one that HAS to be on your true bucket list! Don't look for frills and fancies, this is a Lighthouse. You pack your own cooking and drinking water and bring food for your stay, but you can grill, use the full kitchen (yes there is electricity) and can shower. Most important though, you can climb the light and view it from the outside deck (recently repainted). It is amazing! There are trails and wildlife on the island. It is nature with privacy, beauty, and a lighthouse that is incredible!
