You can stay in the keeper's house at a privately run decommissioned lighthouse that still operates. It is on an island that is a short 8-10 minute boat ride from the Cutler Town boat ramp. Terry, the keeper in residence, is a wealth of knowledge in the lighthouse and community. Why? Because he operated the lighthouse for the Coast Guard over 40 years ago and returned to assist with it after it was decommissioned. How cool is that? Priceless. A small private island, with a huge character, it is amazing to me how this place has been overlooked for so long. If you like lighthouses, and let's be honest who doesn't?, this is one that HAS to be on your true bucket list! Don't look for frills and fancies, this is a Lighthouse. You pack your own cooking and drinking water and bring food for your stay, but you can grill, use the full kitchen (yes there is electricity) and can shower. Most important though, you can climb the light and view it from the outside deck (recently repainted). It is amazing! There are trails and wildlife on the island. It is nature with privacy, beauty, and a lighthouse that is incredible!

I liked that there are steps at various levels, so you can get a range of different views of the rocks and water. Plus it's a great place to get your steps in (if thats important to ya). I really enjoyed this spot on our way out leaving the park. Beautiful scenery to enjoy nature. One could spend a few minutes here or a couple of hours here taking it all in. It was not high or low tide, so I did not get to here the "thunder" but still really cool to look at. According to the internet: "Thunder Hole is a popular inlet known for the loud thunder like boom and spray created when the waves crash into a narrow sea cave. The sound and spray are most dramatic 1 to 2 hours before high tide, but it also interesting at low tide for a closer look at the cliffs." While it was cloudy and chilly on my visit, I still had a great time with my group. Enjoy!

Prospect Harbor divides Sand Cove from Inner Harbor at the head of Prospect Harbor on the southern…read moreshore of Gouldsboro, Maine. FIrst established in 1850, this current structure was built in 1891. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Prospect Harbor Light Station in 1988. In 1891 the station was rebuilt; the present tower and keeper's house date to this period. The brick oil house was added in 1905. The light was automated in 1934, but keepers remained on site until 1951, when its Fresnel lens was removed and replaced by modern optics. The station last underwent major restorative work in the early 2000s; it remains an active aid to navigation. The tower is 38 feet tall and capped by a lantern house with a polygonal roof. The keeper's house is a two-story wood frame structure, clad in shingles on the upper floor and clapboard on the first floor. A porch extends across part of its front, with four square posts and slatted balustrade. The roof of the porch is a continuation of the main roof, and is pierced by a gable-roof dormer. The small brick oilhouse stands a short way north of the house and tower. The lighthouse is about 6 miles from US-1. The lighthouse is on restricted property so you can't get too close to it however there is a rocky beach to the west and you'll get a good picture if the Sun is not behind. There is a special place in my heart for graveyards. I have always found them so calm and peaceful…read more I find the older ones to be especially beautiful, with grave markers of stone or marble, and inscriptions so poetic they continue to pull on the heartstrings decades later. Established in 1790, this is the final resting place of many citizens of Eden, now known as Bar Harbor. It was overcast on the day I chose to visit, and a cool breeze ruffled my hair as I read the names of the long departed. I wondered what these souls were like when they were alive, and if they enjoyed Mount Desert Island. The tombstones are preserved as best as possible despite aging and the elements. I don't wish to attract disrespectful attention to this hallowed place. But, if you're like me and can truly appreciate a historical site such as this, I suggest calling upon this holy place of rest.
