The clerk said a glass of wine would go well with that. I asked, "Where can I buy wine?" Hee hee. It turns out, the gift store is like a Trader Joe's wine shop! They had a zillion choices! I selected a bottle of Chardonnay that I enjoy. Cost? FIVE BUCKS!!!! They even opened it for me. They had all kinds of very cool stuff to buy (including the basic stuff you always forget, like Tampons and Advil), but I resisted, until I saw their "sale" t-shirts. I got a very pretty peach colored "Yosemite" t-shirt, tastefully done with small flowers. Again--FIVE BUCKS! Much of the time, when staying at hotels, one can be sort of at their mercy if you want to buy something you forgot or purchase a souvenir. We came in on a Saturday afternoon after the river and were instantly welcomed by Oscar and his wife. The brewery has a wide selection of beers, all brewed by Oscar himself, and he was kind enough to let us sample whatever we wanted. Every beer we tried was excellent. We hung out for a while chatting with him, and even asked if he knew of a place to watch an English Premier League game the next day. The closest was in Fresno--until Oscar went above and beyond. He told us not to worry, that he would open the brewery just for us on Sunday, even though he's usually closed! The next day we showed up, and Oscar not only opened the doors but let us use our camping stove outside to make tacos. We all enjoyed them together--Oscar included! We expected to stay for about two hours but ended up staying close to five because we were having such a blast. Oscar gave us a tour of the brewery, made us feel like family in his home, gifted us a round on him, and even let us put on some music where we sang at the top of our lungs. I know this is a long review, but it's for a reason. Most breweries can feel impersonal--serve the beer and move on to the next customer. Shuteye Brewery is different. Oscar connects with people and shows, through his actions, that he truly cares about making sure you have a beautiful experience. On top of that, he's dedicated to his community, constantly doing outreach projects to give back. Simply put, the beer is great, the atmosphere is warm, and the owner is amazing. They have everything from high-end champagne, cognac, wines (import & domestic), beers (import & domestic) down to Boone's Farm, Cold Duck, MD-20/20 and all in between. There is not a single kind of booze not sold in this store. Best of all, their prices are fantastic, service is very friendly and hours are decent. I just wish they were here in San Francisco!
