They recently upgraded from 757-200…read moreto 767-300 (two class version), which has more business seats and twin aisles, making the long flight more comfortable. The new Polaris bedding and food are an improvement. Food quality and selection in economy has gotten better as well. The flight is staffed with Legacy crew now that are NY based, as opposed to the previous crews coming from the CO side. The flight departs from gates A00 and A01 now, which is on the opposite side of the main building. It's closer to the LH lounge, but further from the rental car facility. Security checks at TXL are extremely slow and the waiting areas are lousy. United starts boarding early, to make the airport situation less miserable. Update 25 Aug 2019: United now uses refurbished 767-300s with new Polaris seats, which is their latest product. Very nice.

There is zero compassion for medically delicate individuals. It can be very hard living with multiple food allergies, especially when someone can go into full anaphylaxis. I reported my sensitives and allergies prior to the flight / departure. As a customer I went out of my way to ensure my safety with the understanding that avoiding unnecessary medical situations abroad. Despite the person receiving my call via customer service repeated my allergies GUESS WHAT - they still gave me food I was allergic to. It went wrong not once but x2! Things can do wrong and things happen, although I reported this mistake to the flight attendant only to be told "you didn't tell anyone one or you did not report this food allergy correctly". The attendant actually gave me the food back and said "this is all we have" even though I said I AM ALLERGIC AND COULD DIE. I have an epi-pen on me. That was not the proper protocol to respond to a customer with the wrong order. Fault the person who needs help does not help anyone. During my return flight from Berlin the attendants gave me food that I was allergic to again (covered in cheese). I ended up being very hungry on this 15 hour flight. I was told that I can just eat bread.

I flew Turkish Airlines from Berlin's Tegel Airport to Istanbul's Ataturk Airport. It was probably one of the worst flights I have ever experienced -- the weather was not due to the airline's fault but -- the seats were super uncomfortable and lacking in leg space. I also had the unfortunate experience of other passengers constantly shaking my seat although I have tried to politely asked them to stop. The flight attendants did not seem to care for my request to ask the ladies behind me to stop shaking my chair -- not sure if they did not understand English, but they should if their service is offered in English, right? Anyway, I WILL say that there are meals offered on the flights. Berlin-Istanbul is about a three-hour flight, and the meals are SO GOOD. Omg, I think they may be the best airline meals I have ever had, and I will even go as far as to say it is like eating at a regular restaurant -- above mediocre quality, for sure. And the food is also warm and fresh, and the meats are succulent. *Drool* The food definitely made the flight a lot better, but the service could be on par.

Even then, they only refunded 75% claiming it was my fault for not showing up to the flight they rebooked to US via Turkey (adding 12 hours to my 9 hour flight to Miami) which rebooking offer I specifically rejected in writing. Trying to reach them via emails or phone calls is futile. After holding on the phone for hours (I was usually number 120 to 160 in line) they will tell you to email them what you want, and wait for a response which takes min. 3 months. On another occasion last year their Frankfurt customs did a FULL BODY SEARCH on my 3 lb elderly dog. Helga only stopped when I told her it was beyond ridiculous and pulled out my camera to start posting it everywhere on social media. I will say that it's very easy to get to by bus. There are several options and I was there from the Berlin Hilton via the U6 and 128 bus in under 35 minutes! It seems that Berlin would have a world class airport because it's such a world class city, but this doesn't really come close. From talking to friends in Berlin, I understand the topic of airports in Berlin is fraught with a lot more than economics when thinking about Tempelhof, Tegel, Schönefeld, and (maybe someday) Brandenburg. But everyone should come to Berlin and this is one good way to get there!

Departure: - If you're flying internationally (my case to Newark via United at Gate A00) your bag check & ticket check area is your gate, so once you check in you are STUCK and advised not to leave. - I was not even allowed to use the lounge as their is no access once you've checked in ok, ok I know, woe is me, first world problems, but kind of a big deal if youre used to other systems when traveling. - there is no good food at the gate (A00), just vending machines and one sad and overpriced food stand selling pretzels and cheap expensive coffee. This is place is the equivalent terminal A at Newark, but no food, but seemingly ample amounts of charging stations. - the worst is what is a 300 or so passenger plane, has a gate that is equipped with a single person bathroom male/female stalls.
