It's closed now to the public but this was Tampa's main library until 1968. The marker outside reads "Built with a $50,000 grant from industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the Tampa Free Public Library opened its doors on April 27, 1917, becoming the City of Tampa's first public library. This venture was the result of a sustained community effort led by the Tampa Woman's Club adn the Tampa Board of Trade, a tax approval by citizens for annual operating costs, a 4,000-book donation by Mr. and Mrs. L.H. The Hillsborough Avenue Lift Bridge is also known as the T.N. Henderson Bridge (I have no idea why) and it carries State Route 600 and US Highway 92 over the Hillsborough River. It was built in 1939 by the Cone Brothers Construction Company and designed by J.H. Dowling of the State Road Department. What is particularly unique here is that there are two separate bridges at this crossing. The vertical lift bridge serves eastbound traffic and a neighboring bascule bridge serves westbound traffic. The lift bridge was originally part of a road expansion project connecting Tampa's northern suburbs and remains one of only two operable vertical lift bridges in Florida. The much larger Main Street Bridge (aka John T. Alsop Jr. Bridge) in Jacksonville is the other. Vertical lift highway bridges are quite rare. This one features a Warren pony truss lift span with the main span hoisted by cables from machinery housed in two steel towers containing concrete counterweights. In 1999, the bridge underwent rehabilitation to maintain its functionality which is when the bascule bridge was built. There is no toll to cross in either direction. There is a small park on the east bank to the south of the bridges or you can briefly park in the grocery store on the north side. Both bridges have a pedestrian walkway next to the outside lane. There is also a walkway under the bridge on the west bank but I wouldn't recommend going there after dark. I did hang around for a bit but did not get the opportunity to see either bridge lift today. On Wednesdays they have baby time at 11am and I believe at 10am as well. Baby time last for 20-30 minutes and they are lead by very engaging and sweet story time tellers. We do sign language, sing songs, do hand games, and read stories. The babies love it. And then afterwards we usually go to the play area in the back. Not every library in this county has one. She enjoys playing with the other babies and we also read books in the children's library. Customer service is always amazing. Everyone is so nice. And the place is always clean and has a lot of natural light. It's very refreshing coming here.

But this past year I've been fully in my "books and Kindle era," and while I love physical books, I didn't want to start hoarding more since I've already run out of bookshelf space. Minimalist problems So I finally decided to get a library card. I completed the application online back in December but didn't make it in until March. When I arrived, the process couldn't have been easier. The librarian simply looked me up in the system, handed me my card, and even pointed me in the direction of my next thriller read. She was incredibly helpful, and the whole experience was quick and seamless--I honestly wish I had done it sooner. As mentioned, it is a smaller library, but that hasn't been an issue at all. You can easily search for and request books, eBooks, and audiobooks online through the Hillsborough Library app and the Libby app, which makes everything super convenient. Overall, such a positive experience and a great reminder of how valuable our local libraries are!

I was kind of disappointed because of how archaic some of the materials were (i.e cds and dvds), but we had computer access if needed. On the bright side, the attendants at the counter were helpful. We walked away with nothing but maybe next time they'll have what we are looking for.

It is a okay selection of media for a small local library. I normally go to get work and study done. There are only a few tables with outlets so expect to share a table if you need power. There seem to be some "down on their luck" people that make use of the facilities but they have never cause any problems and the library doesn't feel like "police state" in that context like some other nearby ones are like. Problem with the Hillsborough/Florida library system is that it censors access to information and website on the internet. I am not even talking about violent, sexual, or pornographic or illegal material. Just random informational sites or web services they don't like you visiting. Not exactly a free state for a state that proclaim it loves freedom.
