Listen up people…read more I'm about to disclose my number one secret location in the East of the Netherlands: Stadsbrouwerij de Hemel en de Geest. (Brewery Heaven & the Ghost). In this city-castle like building they've got a brewery, a hotel, a restaurant and a cafe. If you're lucky and there's sun you can sit outside in the courtyard and enjoy an enormous variety of beers on their terrace. In the city-wall itself, which was used to defend the city, there are two small ward-houses. Since we're good for now, they've remodelled them into two tiny guesthouses/apartments. You can rent them for about 95 euros a night (a steal) and they give you a downstairs living room, bath, and upstairs bedroom. It's absolutely lovely and there's a lot more privacy then you would normally have in any hotel or bed & breakfast. Beware, the price may have gone up, since last time I stayed there was when I went to a Guns 'n Roses concert in 2002. Either way, if you do go here, and end up having a wee tour of the brewery (oh please do!) be nice to your tour-guide as she may be a good friend of mine! If you're confronted with a tall, flame-haired girl that can banter you up one wall and down the other, yup, that's her. She's been known to lock people in the cellar for a wee bit to cool off if you're not behaving, so better be careful! ;) The good thing about that: you'll be locked in with the beer, the bad part: she's got the keys and you'll have to convince her (or me) to let you out! Now go and get your beer on, but beware of the ghost!

We were able to get seated right on the window area. We chose menu 5, which was just enough for two people. Everything was delicious! Their pea soup is out of this world. Don't know why as it is a simple dish but wow! I also love their herring. It was so delicious that I wanted seconds. It paired so well with their onions and mustard. And their bitterballen was just enough bite. Creamy and crispy! We also got a combination of the hutspot. They were all delicious! Although for me the meatball was just a tad bit salty but it is probably just me! Everything else was spot on. I love their dessert at the end. It was a great way to end the night. Our server and their staff were all amazing! Very friendly and welcoming. Yes it is a tourist spot but totally worth it.

We did not have one but they were happy to seat the 2 of us and invited us to switch tables once another couple left (they were checking out). Small space, can accommodate groups of 2-4, cozy atmosphere, lots of the traditional blue and white ceramics on the wall (dishes and tiles). Traditional Dutch cuisine: we ordered the Boerenkoolstamppot with smoked sausage and Zuurkoolstamppot with smoked sausage and a slice of apple pie to share for dessert. The food arrived piping hot in about 20 minutes. It was sooo delicious--the tasty juicy sausage pairs perfectly the mashed potatoes with either sauerkraut or kale. The apple pie was also tasty--larger chunks of apple and more spices less sugar than American apple pie from what I can tell. Perfect with whipped cream. A must visit if you're in Amsterdam and want to try traditional fare. Highly recommended!

The Pantry - I hadn't had Dutch apple pie since my days waiting tables at Denny's, in the '80s & this was well worth the wait.
