Authentic Dutch food at quite reasonable prices makes this spot hugely popular. How popular? Well, we came on a Tuesday night and everything was booked. Fortunately, our nice hostess said a reservation was canceled and hooked us up. Inside is quite small and sitting and dining right next to a stranger is a strong possibility. But there's comfortable, unpretentious, chill vibe here. Love the decorations inside and the staff is very pleasant. You can order individual items from their large menu, but these nice folks have made it easier for you by having a prefix menu of three-course meals that consist of popular Dutch cuisine. Ordered the number three on their special menu: - 1st course - 3 sausages, bread, pickles and mustard - 8/10: not sure what kind of sausages these were, but one had the texture of pate, the other was like steak tartare, and the last had a bit of snap to the casing. They were all very tasty, but the last one was particularly good. - Main course - 7.5/10 - Beef and onion stew with mashed potatoes and red cabbage. Loved the beef. Very tender cuts that you can knife through with a spoon. Sides were just OK. Wasn't a big fan of the red cabbage though. Tasted sweet like cranberry sauce, but a bit too much of it that you couldn't really taste the cabbage. - Dessert - Chocolate mousse, chocalate ice cream and eggnog - 7.5/10: mousse and ice cream were perfectly fine, but the eggnog had some serious alcohol in it. I think it must've been 80 proof. This is not a bad thing at all. Terrific dinner from terrific people. Definitely recommend.
SERVICE: The service was great! Of note, if there's a wait (and you don't have a reservation) you have to stay outside the front of the restaurant the whole time, you cannot walk around anywhere even if your wait is expected to be 40mins. Friendly host and servers! Patient, kind, and efficient. FOOD: Dutch food. Variety of fish and meat dishes. I had cabbage, beef stew, and mashed potatoes Their bitterballen was very good! I tried some of my friends. Limited drink options (cocktail wise), but can make a gin and seltzer or vodka seltzer. Many beer and wine options. Ambiance, cool eclectic decor inside however seating is very close/tight and tables are only a few inches from one another so don't come with large bags or expect to have space to move around once you've sat down.
Very tiny restaurant like most restaurants in this area. Space is very tight and you're very close to the next tables. In and out is not easy but they make do. We tried menu #1 and the pork chop. On the menu #1: pea soup 4/5; yummy. The meat on the side is ok but the soup is flavorful. The meat ball with the different mash potato is ok 3.5/5. The desert at the end is just yogurt, 2/5. The pork chop is good. 4/5. Not dry. Tasty. Alfa beer: the least I like out of all beer I've tried so far in Amsterdam. 2/5.
The pea soup is soooo fire. First time having it and I must say it is now my favorite soup. My boyfriend got the oven dish. He rated it 4/5, it's simple. My dish was a meat ball and mash potatoes, it was delicious. The portion was so large I had 2 meals! Service was amazing, super funny and warming. We went at 5pm for a table with no reservation. We don't normally eat dinner than early but had to make sure we got a seat here! Would definitely come back. oh and this is our first time trying traditional Dutch cuisine!
Very charm and tiny restaurant that serves traditional Dutch food. It was crowded during lunch time, but the servers are all attentive, fluent in English and get us seated within a reasonable wait time. My party ordered a combination of 3 Dutch sausages. It tastes fine. I love the pea soup, the ham and the caramel waffle with ice cream. My overall dining experience here was awesome. I will recommend this restaurant to people who want to try traditional Dutch food.
This place is very small so you absolutely need reservations. We tried 1-week out and only got lunch availability which was fine for our day. Some came by and sadly were turned away as there was no chance of getting in. Service was very welcoming and friendly. This place is so busy that you're packed in pretty tightly. Food was very tasty traditional Dutch offerings which is exactly what we wanted for our lunch. Filling and good. Don't forget to reserve your lunch or dinner if you want to eat here, and try 2-weeks out if possible. Enjoy!
This lovely restaurant lives up to all the positive reviews. Such a cute and inviting atmosphere, delicious food, and warm friendly service as well. The ham dish was actually a wonderfully cooked pork knuckle that was sublime. Several also ordered the set menus and they were all delicious. Given our short amount of time, we couldn't make it to a herring stand, so to let our nephews try salted/picked herring for the first time, we ordered it here. To my delight, they were every bit as good as getting them from the stands. We all enjoyed them immensely.
In all my visits to Amsterdam (and there have been plenty in the last three years), I never went out of my way to try authentic Dutch food. Well, The Pantry is the Amsterdam institution for Dutch food, so I made my way over here after making a reservation. And DEFINITELY make a reservation...saw plenty of people get rejected at the door. Ordered the Bitterballen (because of course you must order Bitterballen if you are getting Dutch food) and Salted Herring with Onions and Pickles as appetizers. Of course I have at least had Bitterballen before and this was definitely very solid. The mustard that it came with was perfect for it. It was also the first time that I have tried pickled herring. And I actually liked it a lot! Had great taste. The chopped onions it came with added some bite to it. For entrées, we ordered the Bloemkoolstamppot (Mashed Potatoes Mixed with Cauliflower) served with a Smoked Sausage as well as the Savory Beef and Onion Stew (with Red Cabbage and Mashed Potatoes). Both were excellent! Just felt like I was at home eating some very nice homemade food. Hit the spot! Staff here were super friendly. Made some great suggestions as to what we should order. The ambience in here makes you feel like you're actually in a home. Very warm and cozy with the tables close together. Don't know why I've been denying myself on Dutch food for so long because it's pretty damn good. Need to come back!
I wanted to try "Amsterdam(Netherland) traditional meal", so I checked here. This place is very famous especially for the tourist (of course, there are local customers too) so highly recommended to make a reservation. Luckily I and my husband made it without reservation but waited for about hour. It's cozy restaurant and was super crowded but servere(especially a woman) was super nice. If you visit first time, recommend to order their course. They have five kinds of course that can enjoy the Netherland's meals. I chose Menu 1(Dutch Delight menu) and my husband chose Menu 2(Grandmothers kitchen menu). Menu 1 comes with Pea-Soup with rye bread and smoked bacon, Combination of Hutspot, zuurkool-en boerenkoolstamppot served with a smoked sausage or a meatball, Vlaflip (vanilla custard with yoghurt and syrup). Menu 2 comes with Dutch goat cheese croquettes (3), Oven dish with cauliflower, ground beef, Old Amsterdam cheese, curry onions and mashed potatoes, Poffertjes (Mini pancakes served with butter and powdered sugar). All food was so good and we really enjoyed Netherland's meal dinner.

The Pantry is a small restaurant that serves the best meals. I adore Amsterdam, and never thought of Amsterdam as a foodie paradise. It really is. The Pantry s proof of that. I was craving fries, so we started with fries as an appetizer. The fries were perfect. They needed to be salted, but they were crispy on the outside, and perfectly soft on the inside. The "beef croquettes " that we ordered as the actual appetizer were perfection in each bite. Tasty beef mixed in with tasty cheesy rue, and deep fried to perfection. The mustard dipping sauce tied all of the flavors together. Then we ordered dinner... this was a dining event that I would repeat over and over. The traditional meatball and potato dish is an Amsterdam favorite. I totally get it. It's comfort food. It's tasty. It's flavorful. It will satisfy your tummy screaming for food. The chicken satay was so filling. A huge portion of tender chicken covered in a tasty peanut sauce. It doesn't taste like the Americanized version of satay. It's a deeper less sweeter version of what I've tried. The side salad was amazing. Strange to say that, but it was! There was another side that was not identifiable, but damn delicious! Everything was amazing. Yes, we ordered way too much food. Yes, I would do it again. Yes, we ordered dessert anyway. The apple pie was the right way to top off an epicurean experience. Amsterdam is known for apple pie. Who knew ?!? Order the pie! The apple slices are juicy. The apples are sweetened with a sweet cinnamon sauce that will make you lick the fork with every bite. To top off a great dining experience, we were seated next to another couple. There's something about meeting new friends, having a shared experience, and leaving with a super full tummy, and a super full heart. The Pantry... it's a must! Must get reservations that's definitely tip number 1! This place is so delicious and everyone is so nice! The place is crowded but in a good way because the food is so tasty! We got the #1 and #3 courses meals which was amazing! The pea soup was so good and then the dinners--the sausage was amazing and the beef stew and cabbage! Yum! Followed by a delicious dessert--I liked the chocolate tray the best--chocolate ice cream, mousse!
Love this place! Happy that we were able to get a seat quickly here because reservations are a must! Inside may feel and look cramped but it is super cozy. We were able to get seated right on the window area. We chose menu 5, which was just enough for two people. Everything was delicious! Their pea soup is out of this world. Don't know why as it is a simple dish but wow! I also love their herring. It was so delicious that I wanted seconds. It paired so well with their onions and mustard. And their bitterballen was just enough bite. Creamy and crispy! We also got a combination of the hutspot. They were all delicious! Although for me the meatball was just a tad bit salty but it is probably just me! Everything else was spot on. I love their dessert at the end. It was a great way to end the night. Came by for dinner the other night and it was a decent experience. The Pantry is a very popular traditional Dutch restaurant. Made a reservation and my table was ready upon arrival. Dining is available both indoors or outdoors. It was towards freezing when I went so the outdoor tables were available for walk-ins. Reservations are a good idea. Started off with the pea soup and it was different. The soup was pretty thick and tasted like peas. There were a couple slices of sausage that were placed over the soup. The soup was served with a slice of rye bread along with a piece of bacon...interesting to say the least. For the main, opted for the hutspot which was mashed potatoes with carrots, 3 scoops, along with a sausage. The mashed potatoes were ok, although I only managed to finish half a scoop. Portions were gigantic. The sausage was ok. The highlight of the meal was the Dutch apple pie. This was served warm. The pie was freshly baked and wasn't too sweet. It was filled with apples and topped with white powdered sugar. This was also served with a side of whipped cream. The interior of the restaurant is cramped and the staff were wonderful. Such a lovely little place! The service was so kind and the local Dutch cuisine was exactly what we were hoping for. We enjoyed everything that we ordered but I personally could not get enough of their split pea soup! read more

Is The Pantry a tourist trap? Quite possibly...I have no idea. Does the answer to that question impact the fact that The Pantry is doing a LOT right? Absolutely not! The Pantry has been serving classic Dutch dishes, such as bitterballen, herring, kroketten, hutspot & poffertjes for 25 years &, while the menu & decor scream traditional Dutch, they are thankfully modern enough to offer vegetarian versions of some of these items. While the food was great, I cannot say enough about the staff! The main woman who served us--I say "main" because they really do work as a team & we were attended to by at least three friendly & capable women--must be the hardest working woman in Amsterdam. She was all over that restaurant, making sure everybody had what they needed, all while lugging a well ladened bustub. read more

We didn't get reservations and they were already all booked up for the day but we called at 430 pm on a Wednesday and we're told to come as soon as possible because it wasn't currently busy , luckily we got a table by the window. The people that came after us that didn't have reservations were turned away . We saw the reserved tables got filled quickly after we sat down at our snug but cozy table to enjoy signature regional dishes . read more

Crazy amazing, loving sweet, feels like home, best ever! We were on vacation and stopped by for a bite. Table for four so we waited a bit however once we sat down we all rated this + Authentic GREAT FOOD! Small location but the ambiance and food make it worth the wait. We, being Americans felt at home because when you make food with love and not just for profit you can never go wrong. read more
This place has great options for Dutch food. The herring is a must try! The ambiance is cute and cozy- very traditional setting. It has great indoor and outdoor seating. It was a cozy getaway from the winter rains. The servers are friendly and very helpful in what to get. Options range from 3 course meals to a la carte. It is a don't miss! read more

We wanted to try some classic Dutch food and the reviews led us here. Def a tourist spot tho You can order a la carte or get their set menus to try more things. Not really sure what we ate but overall, pleasantly surprised by the spread. The herring unexpectedly was a fav but probs bc I'm still going through my tinned fish phase. Tastes like a less pungent anchovy - def better with onions and pickles. Main dishes are a potato heavy so the cabbage added that much needed acidity (like warm pickles?). Loved the poffertjes Had this bouncy chew!! In the cup is vlaflip, a combo of vanilla custard, yogurt, and syrup. Kinda confusing but I still ate it. Overall, it's giving man (at sea) dinner with all the meats and potatoes. Set Menu 2 €28.50 Set Menu 3 €31.50 Set Menu 5 €39.95 더치 가정식(?) 먹어보고싶어서 찾아간 곳. 한인 블로그에서 발견해서 그런지 뭔가 입맛에 꽤 맞았다. 단품으로 주문도 가능한데 다양하게 맛보고 싶으면 세트 메뉴 추천 맛있다고 하기엔 애매하고 그냥 먹을만하다. 양도 많구 전체적으로 감자 위주의 식단이라서 완전 묵직한 식사였음. 5번 구성은 1번 메뉴를 확장한 거라 굳이 herring 안먹고 싶으면 1&2 세트로 주문하기. 요 두가지 구성이 제일 좋았음. read more
Saw a YouTube video that raved about this place so we made a reservation weeks in advance. It is a small authentic Dutch restaurant and amazing. We were so fortunate to get a two top near the front window. Was cozy and perfect. The staff was wonderful. We enjoyed the Dutch wine. It was very good. The veggie Bitterballs were delicious. We loved the food, atmosphere and experience. Can't recommend it enough. If in the area it's a must. read more

I got really lucky to get one of the last tables before the wait started to build up, even on a Wednesday night. Everything on Special Menu 2 was excellent! If you are a fan of goat cheese, those croquettes are a must! Staff were very kind and brought out each course promptly. In quite a touristy area but the food was actually good and seemed authentic, to me at least. read more

First trip to Amsterdam and saw good things about the Pantry on line. It was fun! A very small place, make sure you get reservations. We enjoyed trying the food . Service was very attentive. Go, you will love it ! read more
Recommended by Olga the concierge at our hotel. She said that they serve casual authentic Dutch food. It's small, but if we go without a reservation and stand there, we will get inside. There were tables out front as well. Tables were very close together & we heard many different languages here. The menu was 20 pages thick, overwhelming! Then there were 4 prix fixe specials of the day. I ordered the traditional hut spot with a meatball carrots and onions, while my husband had a sea bass meal. We both enjoyed our meal. My meatball was covered in a salty gravy with mounds of mashed potatoes mixed with carrots & onions. Portions were generous, service on point & helpful and our lunches were tasty. read more

Came on a late afternoon without reservation and they seated me within 15 minutes. However, they're so busy that I had to finish within 45 minutes ahead of the next reservation. Still I'm glad they squeezed me in and I had a chance to try this place. They serve a lot of traditional Dutch dishes. I got the hutspot (or mashed potatoes) served with a smoked sausage and it was so delicious! Would come back again for the same thing or try the other menu items. read more

I was told before not to trust a place that served food with the country's flag on it. There's no surer sign of a tourist trap. But The Pantry was such a nice intro to Dutch cuisine, I don't care if it's a bit touristy. I mean, isn't Amsterdam in general a little touristy? The Pantry serves many traditional Dutch dishes, which you can order a-la-carte, but you can also order as part of set menus. We went with Set Menu #1 which included pea soup, hutspot (a potato/carrot mash) boerenkoolstamppot (a potato/kale mash) and zuurkoolstamppot (a potato/saurkraut mash) with sausage, and vanilla custard as dessert. We also added an order of the famous pickled herring. The pea soup was very savoury and comforting, with pieces of bacon inside. The various mashes were decent and paired nicely with sausage, though not anything I would crave again. However, the dish I fell in love with and would order multiple more times during my visit was pickled herring. Don't let the exoticness scare you away, it kind of tastes like a really decadent piece of sashimi. Somehow the raw onions work super well with fatty fish and now I feel like adding onions to more fish dishes at home. The ambiance of the restaurant is also summed up by the word cozy. There are beautiful Dutch style blue and white porcelains decorating the walls. The servers were super friendly. The restaurant is quite small though but luckily they also allow reservations. There was something extremely comfortable about eating some hot soup in the corner of this tiny restaurant as we watched it pour rain outside. This was a traditional dutch restaurant in Amsterdam that I went to dinner for one night while visiting the city. I recommend making reservations as this place is small and can get busy. I opted for the combination menu #1 that came with Pea-soup with rye bread and smoked bacon, Combination of hutspot, boerenkoolstamppot and zuurkoolstamppot served with a meatball and Vlaflip (vanilla custard with yoghurt and fruit syrup). All of the food tasted so good! Especially the pea soup. Delicious. This meal was very filling as the hutspot are very heavy! Out of the 3 I liked the one with the carrots the best. Awesome dining experience! Arrived on a Monday around 2pm and it was quite bustling; almost all the tables were taken but luckily we didn't have to wait. We were looking for a place with traditional Dutch food and this place did not disappoint! Both meals we tried were delicious and fresh. We paired them with local wine and beer, also very tasty and a great accompaniment. Ambiance was also very cute with traditional decorations and a sweet homey vibe. i think this place is great for those who have never tried authentic dutch cuisine as they offer a large variety of dutch dishes. i ordered the bitterballen which as delicious and reminded me of porto's potato balls. we also got the combo stamppot with sausage. objectively, it wasn't bad but i just don't think I am a fan of dutch cuisine in general! read more
