Such a simple combination, but absolutely perfect. Service at the beer stand is super quick, though keep in mind it's cash only. The atmosphere is unbeatable. Sitting under the shady trees at communal tables, sharing space with locals and travelers, and striking up random conversations with people around you is exactly what makes this place special. It's a great spot to meet new people, relax, and enjoy a cold Bavarian beer. If you're in Munich, this is a must-visit. One of those places I wish I could teleport back to!

We did go to other similar restaurants during our stay in Munich and quickly realized how great this place truly is. The others didn't compare. Big pluses besides what I've already stated, is they gave us tap water, no problem and no cost, which was a problem elsewhere in Germany. Also the bathrooms are at the same level as restaurant. Situated about two blocks from the main square at Marienplatz, the Augustiner am Platzl sits kitty-corner from the famous (and very touristy) Höfbräuhaus München. The Augustiner is a much smaller beer hall, offers a more authentic atmosphere, and feels very much like a place that locals go. Having eaten there every time I've been to Munich, we chose it as the place for a special family meal. The menu offers a wide variety of traditional German dishes including brathaus beef, Nürnberger sausages, schweinsbraten (pork), roast beef with onion, grilled chicken (for the less adventurous) and more. Soups and salads were also on the menu and our party of 13 ordered a pretty impressive cross-section of the restaurant's dishes. The establishment is tied to the Augustiner brewery, which lays claim to being the oldest of all existing Munich breweries, dating back to the early 14th century. As a result, only Augustiner beers are on offer, though there is a good selection, including "hell" beer (light or bright), edelstoff (a light export beer), dark, pilsner and wheat beer. There is also a decent selection of both red and white German wines and of course, soft drinks. But this is Germany! What adult needs a soft drink? The day we visited was also our oldest grandson's 15th birthday so there were many reasons to celebrate. And this occasion was made even more memorable by the others who shared the upstairs dining room with our party of 13. When we sang "Happy Birthday!" many of our fellow diners joined in the singing and the applause that followed. Talk about making us feel like part of the community! This isn't gourmet German bakery food but it's not an awful choice. It's good in a pinch and will satisfy your cravings. Bonus points because of all the vegetarian options, including a pepper topped PizzaSnack that is my go-to favorite. Located in the busy Munich train station so lines can appear long but they move quickly because of the excellence of German efficiency. Have your money ready and you're good to go.
