M&H Gas Station is one of those unexpected gems that makes a mini road trip totally worth it. From live bait to a surprisingly well-stocked deli, this place has a little bit of everything - I came for the broasted chicken. WOW! ... who would have thought gas station fried chicken could rival some of the best restaurant meals? Perfectly brined, incredibly juicy, and fried to a crispy, golden perfection. Every bite delivered. We made a whole afternoon out of it, paired the meal with some beers from a local brewery called Spiral Brewery. Tried to swing by a few vintage shops in town too, but small town hours are real! They were all closed by 5pm. Oh well, just another reason to come back. read more

Took a little road trip to try the chicken at M&H. The gas station was nice, quite big with LOTS of options both at the deli and regular gas station offerings. I had the chicken, potato wedges and a side of fried mushrooms. The mushrooms were a standard frozen fried product and were fine, but the serving was a little small. Chicken was tasty and moist. I didn't think it was anything really groundbreaking, however, and the pieces were a bit on the small side. Happened to be in Hastings and had heard this place has some of the best broasted chicken in the state. I ordered a 12 piece meal that was more than enough for 4 people. It came with 2 sides and some dinner rolls. The sides are huge. I think they are quart sized. I got the Mac n cheese and the coleslaw. They prepared the order very quickly, I don't think I waited even 10 minutes. I brought the chicken home and it was really good! Very crispy on the outside but retaining its moisture under the skin. Chicken is a bit salty but I'm told that's how broasted chicken is. The sides were fine not the star of the show but still good accompaniments. I will definitely stop here again when I'm in Hastings! read more

The convenient store was clean and well organized. Staff were friendly and greeted us when we entered even though they were behind the register-a first for me at a gas station. Stopped in for some of the broasted chicken. The chicken had a slight taste of fish, where it seems they've been fried in the same oil as fish. It wasn't too strong or off putting since I like fried fish anyway but just noting it here. The sides were fine in flavor and a good addition to round out the Sunday night dinner. We got a 10 piece meal for only $29.99+tax so it wasn't a bad deal. It's a gas station pumping out chicken--I don't expect everything to be made from scratch or much at all so it's a win here in my book. I heard about this place for chicken and wanted to get it done with. I found the broasted really tasty and moist. I had a wing in the car. I like the bag it comes in cause no grease gets through. I picked up the generic macaroni and potato salad that are loaded with high fructose corn syrup. There are things added you just can't see much aside from a few peas in the mac salad. I like the individual containers of various salads and think they're cute. I tried a tri colored pasta salad which basically has bottled Italian dressing dumped on it. Easy access pumps with some wider spaces and safer conditions to exit without edging someone's vehicle. Hey, I was scolded by a pump! Since the day pay-at-the-pump arrived we insert the card and quickly remove. That I did, hmm circle starts spinning with message to "insert card again". Tried again and pulled quickly and greeted with a message in amber, "don't remove card until instructed". Yes'M I'll place my homework on the proper corner of your desk. A different twist in card procedure. At least I wasn't delayed with messages about entering a rewards number. A great corner with the usual convenience store with loads of sodas and energy drinks. At least in Mn all the chains so far are reliable and efficient. Travel south of Missouri and the stations look a lot different. read more

The longer I live here ... I came to MN from TX but grew up in NJ for the first 30+ years of my life. I cannot believe that I would ever say, let's go get food that they make at the gas station because it is some of the best in town. BUT I do say that regularly because the broasted chicken is AWESOME!! And finding good hush puppies this far north is sooo rare! There are also the more expected and still delicious offerings of coleslaw and mashed potatoes with gravy. Jojos look like fries of a certain cut but are soggy and underdone (intentionally). Everything is served fresh from behind a To-Go counter right inside the gas station store. This area is always impeccably clean. There is a small counter to look out on the parking lot. Decently clean. Restrooms are ok. Choice of beverages is excellent. read more

Whenever I'm in Hastings I stop here for some hot delicious chicken and JoJo potatoes. It never disappoints.

The main place is a gas station. Tucked inside is a roasted chicken counter service joint. You cannot miss it because the sign in outside has the chicken written in larger size than the business name. Greeted by a pleasant local young man who explained the pricing and recommended a set (when he knew our preferences for dark meat). The electronic lcd screen menu was also very clear but our questions confusing everyone. In a few seconds (literally) our order was ready mostly consumed while we were still standing by the counter. The pieces were perfectly seasoned and broasted crispy on the outside moist and well done on the inside. I found myself humming an old tune by Miquel Brown "Close to Perfection" It was without doubt the best broasted chicken we have had in MN. Our quest to locate MN best has been fulfilled. But the best part was the un-greasy result we had fresh and again after reheating on a toaster oven 8 hours later. Unfortunately it is out of the way for us but will trek the trip again soon. -if you order their amazing potato wedges then insist on getting a fresh batch fried specially for you otherwise you would be tempted to leave a four star review instead of five. read more

So we're driving through town and looking for quick food that might be good, and in the midst of the typical small town franchises, we saw a sign for Broasted Chicken! Ok so it's at a gas station. Well it was that or Perkin's lol, so we decided to try it. We expected to take out, but to our surprise we saw a long high top counter for eat-in. How fun. So we got a 12pc bucket and some sides for a quick dinner on the way through town. The young lady behind was super friendly, and very accommodating to dine-in patrons, as were the young men behind the cashier counter. They have a well stocked condiments counter. They even have mango habañero sauce if that suited your fancy! The chicken was full of flavor, albeit a bit salty. The jo-Jo's were great. Skip the corn, unless you want to do what I did and fix it, as it's just canned corn sitting in hot water unseasoned. All in all, broasted chicken is very hard to come by even in the city, so this was a gem of a find! We'll definitely come back here next time we're in Hastings! Way to go M&H! read more

Spent about 2 weeks in Hastings for work. Limited by options, the front desk clerk tipped me to this place. I was forewarned it is a gas station. I immediately relied on my Yelp app. The gal before my post stated it was worth the "40 minute drive." Therefore, I ventured in and found the food counter next to the gas register. The chicken appeared to have been sitting under the heat lamps for some time. I asked the worker if another batch was coming out soon. He nicely offered to drop some in the fryer for me. I went with the dark meat. You cant mess up dark meat?!?! ...One should not assume. The chicken was soggy and full of oil. It was not appealing and lacked flavor. After 2 bites, my order found its way into the hotel trash can. The mashed potatoes were actually good. My husband went to get some fried chicken last night. When we got home and we were getting it out of the bag, we were both very upset. It was a VERY SMALL chicken. I usually eat the leg and wing, and the wing I had was so small, it was barely a nibble, as was the leg. My husband was very very upset. $13 and barely 2 or 3 bites on the bigger (not so much bigger), pieces and it was gone. I doubt we will go there anymore. Long before McDonalds blew into town, Hastings enjoyed a "bomb and a bag of nails" from the original M&H burger shop. Every bit as good, as far as I was concerned. Today M&H does the gas and convenience thing as well as everybody else, but nobody does chicken yet like M&H! The Kona coffee is good too. I'm happy every time I see my friends, but I don't gush over them. And that's M&H - friendly, not gushy. You want gushy, buy your gas in LA. read more
