Unlike other nearby cooperatives and health food stores, I feel hiSbe's ethical mission is different -- not just to offer foods that are good for people and produced ethically and sustainably, but also to offer them at a fair price! Their atmosphere is also totally different, like the board on which you can write product suggestions that you hope they'd consider carrying, or just little comments about what you loved in the store that day. I especially like how much they emphasize local produce -- I go there first before checking any other supermarkets to see if any of the ingredients I need for the day can be sourced locally. This also means they carry a lot of local brands of packaged goods (Sussex Gold for example) that can't be found in supermarkets. They also have fair trade bananas, and a sign explaining their choice which I found very informative. If you love buying bulk goods like I do, but don't want to support certain other stores in Brighton that have them but are politically contentious, hiSbe should be your go-to! They have bulk pastas and grains (including short grain brown rice), bulk oatmeal and museli base, bulk chocolate buttons, and bulk nuts available. Unfortunately no bulk seasonings and very few bulk legumes. They also have a coffee shop inside which has ethical coffee options and also a vegan chocolate beet cake that calls my name every day but I've managed to resist so far. Anyway, it's easily my favourite supermarket in Brighton and I want them to stick around for a long time, so I hope you'll give them a try!

Before…read morebeing taken over by Waitrose, this used to be a Co-op and it was a fairly depressing place to shop, but now it's a Waitrose it's become much more pleasant. The most enjoyable aspect of this shop is that it is reasonably quite. It's not full of hoards of people like Asda and Tesco. Obviously, the quality of the food is of a high standard although I do find that the fresh produce can go off quite quickly. It's a little more expensive than other supermarkets so I don't exclusively shop here, but bargains can also be found with the Waitrose Essentials range. There is a pharmacy, dry cleaners and two coffee shops on site, and if you register for a My Waitrose card you can get a free tea or coffee every time you shop, plus a free copy of the monthly magazine - who doesn't like a freebie?! Parking is generally easy and I even manage to get a parent and child space on most occasions. There are also plenty of trolleys so you don't need to go searching for one. It's the simple things! Another plus point of this store is that you can order from John Lewis and pick up here which is pretty handy to save on delivery costs.

Spacious, wide aisles and courteous staff (or partners, as they like to be known) make Waitrose an all round pleasurable shopping experience. For me, anyway. Contrary to popular belief, Waitrose isn't snobby or expensive, just has some clever marketing. Sure, they do sell stuff that most people won't want or need (scented ironing water anyone?) But they get the basics right too. Like I said before, if it's good enough for the Queen then it's good enough for me!

In addition, I recently discovered a new organic grocers has opened up making this an even more inspiring spot. Gratitude Grocers has a wonderful display of fruit and veg out the front which immediately draws the eye. Pick up a lovely old fashioned wicker basket and start shopping! Great quality fresh local produce is hard to resist. I brought some leeks and potatoes to make a soup, and some wonderfully large, juicy plums. Inside, the great produce continues. Freshly baked bread from Flint Owl Bakery, locally produced sausages and bacon, dairy produce, local honey, vegan goods and homemade falafel are among some of the delights available. I would definitely recommend the falafel - I ate mine in the car before I even drove off! Downstairs, there is apparently a great selection of organic produce such as shampoo and cleaning products, I didn't make it down this time as I was with my little one in the pram, but will defiantly return to check it out. Organic stores are often ridiculously over priced but I didn't think this was the case here. On top of all this, the proprietor was so friendly and chatty I left feeling like I had made a new friend! Shopping experiences like this are hard to come by so I wish this small business every success. The owner mentioned the possibility of opening a store in my local area, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this happens one day.

The store carries a lot of confectionary, dairy, frozen food and some alcohol as well as some essential toiletries and cleaning items. Opening times are much longer here than with other convenience stores.

It's often busy - unsurprisingly - after trains full of commuters arrive in the evening at the nearby station, to pick up provisions on their way home. Two of the tills are of the modern 'scan and pay' self-service variety, and there is a cash point (ATM) outside. The store has level access from the street, and there are several car parking paces right outside, although they often seem to be taken up by locals parking there full time.
