Called Citizen's Bank and B.O.A. --- all of these banks wanted to actually charge me a monthly fee in order to use my money and extend credit. Either that or they wanted me to jump through hoops like setting up regular deposits and etc. What?! Ain't nobody got time for that. Evans Bank was one of the good guys. No fees with no stupid rules or minimums (except the min of $25 to open the account in the first place). Matthew, the assistant branch manager helped us open the account and personable throughout the process. The account also had some nifty features: if you DO setup a monthly deposit and enroll in paperless checking, you get 1.25% APY and a refund on all ATM fees under $5. Now that's positive reinforcement I can get behind and rave about. Very cool bank that started in WNY and only has a dozen or so branches locally. I called back a few days later because they never reversed the fee and the wait time was 20 min. Banks make a ton of money from us, how about you hire some staff so the customer doesn't have to wait forever.

In addition, the BFCU supports local causes, has a yearly driveway sale for venders and the public, and collects items for the homeless at certain times of the year. They also sell movie tickets at a discounted rate. There are opportunities to serve on the board and join in yearly parties and meetings. They are everything a local bank should be!

Now, if you knew my mom, you'd know her powers of observation are... aspirational at best. She could see a barber pole and tell you it looks like someone she knows. So I filed this information away with a healthy dose of skepticism. Fast forward to modern times, where I now help manage a lot of her banking and have been coming into Summit regularly for about five years. I've met the supposed "look-alike" several times. Spoiler alert: she does not look like me. She's younger, taller, brunette, and shares exactly zero identifiable features with me. (My mom still insists. Recently she even tried to justify it by saying, "Well, she's lost some weight." I stared at her in silence until she realized what she'd just said and started laughing. So... there's that.) All that aside--this place is exceptional. Because of how warm, friendly, and genuinely "down-home" Summit feels, I eventually opened my own account here too, even though it's no longer convenient to our current location. And I will never close it. They know my mom the moment she walks in. When she fumbles for her ID, they let it slide because they truly know her. They ask how she's doing, remember details about her life, and treat her with patience, kindness, and respect. When I was buying a house, they gathered around to look at pictures, oohing and aahhhing in all the right places like proud friends--not just tellers behind a counter. This is one of those rare places where you feel seen and remembered. You matter here. And as a bonus?
