Needed some pastries ASAP without venturing too far away from work, so Google led me to this little bakery in the sketchy part of Chinatown/downtown. It's a cute little space once you get inside. The display case is packed full of a large variety of goods. They have a lot of their pastries frozen "in the back" if you can't eat/serve it within the next day or two. I bought a bunch of eclairs for Christmas dinner. They're pretty large eclairs, colorful and generously filled with cream. I bought a box of tarts for a friend; she said the lemon and key lime tarts were a hit at her dinner table. Price-wise, I find it on the upper end of average. Excellent service. The person serving me was more than happy to answer all my questions about how long each item would last in the fridge. (and, if you're curious, I had an eclair in a container for a few days and it was still fine when I ate it) It was pretty quiet inside. Given the location, I'm not sure how much foot location they get. Free parking out back, but be careful of all the homeless folk milling around. They have a large assortment of macaron to choose from and different types of cakes, tarts and pastries as well. I ordered the Ferrero inspired cake for a birthday, it looked absolute amazing but it was a bit too sweet for my liking. The lemon tart had a meringue topping and tasted ok. They macarons were also a bit lacking as well. Overall, I was a bit disappointed. The store itself is nicely decorated, nice pastel colors and lots of beautiful display cases. Used the app Too Good to Go to try this place. I drive by it sometimes and was curious to try it. When I saw it show up on the app I thought it was the perfect chance to give it a try and pick up a few things while I was there. I paid $7.99 and the value was suppose to be $25. Now I understand that the app deals with day old items. The items in my tiny bag were far older than day old. The 2 macrons were literally broken. The one didn't even have a top to it. The spiral pastry was so dry and old it was brittle. Other than those two items I got a broken cookie and some wrapped chocolates? Anyways. The food was inedible and in no world does the value of the items i got even come close to equaling the total it was suppose to be. When I called to ask if this was normal He said "we put in a value of $15-$17. Not sure why they wouldn't do the $25 like advertised - but if they did I guess it would have just been extra inedible food. He told me I could come back and get new stuff. I'm sitting here like why wouldn't you want to give decent stuff the first time? I shouldn't have to go back to switch it out. You should have enough respect for customers that you don't have them broken, stale, old items, the first time around. It's a beautiful shop. I visited both the downtown YEG and St. Albert location of Macaron & Goodies today. A group of coworkers and myself popped into the downtown location today on our way back to the office. It's a couple blocks north and east of Rogers Place - located on 105th and & 101st street. We all got the feeling that this isn't much of a walk up shopping area and maybe used more so for the catering side of the business. Everything looked absolutely scrumptious inside from the 21 flavors of Macarons to the spiced pear tart! Between the lot of us we ordered about a dozen flavors a Macarons and a couple pastry treats. My favorite macaron by a landslide was the lavender vanilla. The mango was okay and the salted caramel... well, both my coworkers salted caramel Macarons were crumbly and crunchy - not fresh or soft or chewy. And mine had an oopsy - a hair in it. I emailed the store a picture of it and a note when I got back to the office. They responded quickly within the hour inviting me to come back for a replacement (and that's what brought me to the St. Albert location later in the evening... but I digress...) This location offers lunch and French breakfasts but the ambiance and seating didn't really make us want to stay. Again, we felt the vibe was more order to go and catering here (St. Albert is larger and felt more inviting to stay for a cup of tea or coffee). Unfortunately the consensus in my group was that these were okay but not amazing - and also not consistent. One coworker has been to France and lived there for several years so she loooooves her French pastries and she was disappointed in both her macaron and chocolate au pain. So I'm left up in the air about the downtown location. I'll be much more likely to pop into the St. Albert one as a mom daughter treat. * Also they still had candy canes and Xmas decor up in February - odd, but okay. I heard about this bakery but walked right by it as I was going to meet a friend. I'm glad that after our lunch she wanted to bring me here! The bakery was empty when we arrived and no one behind the counter but a woman popped head out from the doorway towards the back. I don't recall her saying anything and we browsed the baked goods as we waited for someone to help us. The young woman who helped us with helpful and gave us her recommendations. She also told us there was parking behind the building. There was also a free sample and it was yummy! I can't recall the exact name but it was like an apple torte. Next time I will buy that. My friend tried the almond croissant and recommended it. There were 3 so I bought one and she bought the other 2. I also bought macarons to share with others but I should have gotten other sweet treats as they were not my favourite. I ate half of the croissant the next morning but I didn't warm it up. It was a heavy instead of light and flaky and later that day I warmed it up and it tasted better and not so heavy. They also have ice cream that looked yummy too! There are two tables with chairs and reading materials. I likely wouldn't sit and eat but I'm often in the area for work so I'll definitely be back to get other sweet treats! read more

This is a surprising little gem to find in a pretty dubious area - most of the businesses on this block are closed down and boarded up, but this little French bakery seems to be doing well and is full of delicious cakes, pastries, and sandwiches. I assume most of their business is done by catering and Skip the Dishes, but they do have seating for 10-15 people. I've been there a couple of times for lunch and their sandwiches are great, as are the desserts I've tried. The service is a little slow, but I'll definitely be back. read more

This place is special. An oasis in the middle of what is not Edmonton's best side. The pastries are wonderful. In fact I would say that they are better than some of Edmonton's more well publicized bakeries. I had the opera slice for $5.95 (expect to pay more elsewhere) and it was incredible. I tasted some other delights and all were good. They also offer sandwiches, coffee and breakfast so we will be back to try those. They have very comfortable seating but it is limited (three or four tables). Note that the free parking area behind the shop isn't for everyone. It's safe but there may be a number of homeless people nearby. If that's a concern there's other parking that can be found nearby. 5 out of 5 stars. read more

I was walking by this place to go to City Centre Mall for lunch. On the outside, it didn't look like it might be open. It's a sketchy area and there's just a general feeling of dust covered, out of business stores. I took a risk and stepped inside. It felt like I had teleported into a totally different place. Inside, the atmosphere was so fresh. The place was clean with a couple large tables able to seat up to four people each. Behind the counter, this friendly lady greeted me with, what I later learned was, a Tunisian accent. On display there was an array of sweets ranging from cookies to eclairs and cinnamon buns. She had even prepared some Orange Crush macarons in honour of the Oilers. I decided to order the chicken sandwich and it was delightfully simple, yet delicious. One of the favourite parts of the sandwich was the warm ciabatta bread. It had red peppers which I usually avoid but they really worked with the sandwich. This place is a hidden gem in downtown. Yes, the location is not very appealing as there are many homeless people on this street, but it's worth a visit! We have been quite happy to discover this little beautiful bakery in Downtown Edmonton. The place is very cozy and feels very cozy and it is very pleasant - very convenient soft chairs, wooden tables, very nice soft-sounding French music... The food is excellent - we ordered a mushroom soup and crepe with chicken and mushrooms; the croissants are indeed genuine French croissants , and espresso tasted great. The atmosphere and service is very friendly. The prices are very moderate. Macarons & Goodies is a sweet little shop located in a not-so-sweet part of town. I have high hopes that the recent revitalization that the arena is bringing to downtown will liven up this location in coming years. I hopped over here after lunch in Chinatown with my husband and good friend to grab dessert. The shop is really pretty, with bright pastel colors, beautiful display cases and comfortable furniture to sit and relax with a coffee or meal. Along with baked goods, there are full menu options available, including soup and sandwiches. Since I had just had lunch I wasn't too interested in the savory options, but it looked like there was a good variety. Between the three of us we got quite a sampling, including macrons, Madeleines, a brownie, a small cake and an eclair. Everything was very pretty, and the care the owners put into preparing good looking desserts is evident. I was quite pleased with my Madeleine and macarons, they had nice texture and sweetness, and were fresh. We all agreed that everything was good and that we would return, but we wouldn't make a special trip downtown just to visit. read more

So we risked life and limb going to skid row block. Theres supposed to be parking in the back but no way are we exiting. We did find some other parking and quickly haunted over to the macrons. We wanted to try everything. We opted to try 10 flavors. Everything tasted light slightly chewy slightly crispy with a lovely creme centre. I was excited to see a French bakery in between downtown and Chinatown. They had a variety of cookies, cakes, croissants, and of course macarons. I got two almond croissants, two almond pain au chocolate and one pistachio diamond and one vanilla orange diamond. I was sorely disappointed once I took a bite of my croissant. It was chewy and overly sweet, not at all flakey or buttery like a croissant should be. The pain au chocolate was a similar disappointment. The pistachio diamond did not have any pistachio taste at all. The vanilla orange was slightly better as it had actual orange rind which gave it a fragrant citric flavor. The prices were similar to duchess, and Id much rather wait in line for a melt in my mouth flaky croissant, than return here. read more

I went to Macarons and Goodies a month ago. I mention this for two reasons. 1) If others are like me, they didn't notice the quirky combination of Macaron (French) plus Goodies (English). Although it is respectable use of our two official languages, it may make M&G hard for the unilingual to find on the Web. Secondly, my review being a month old, the store may now have evolved. I was slightly disappointed after my initial visit to M&G. Perhaps it was that I grew up in Montreal a block from Banville Bakery and that patisserie has been imprinted on my soul as the ideal. Perhaps it was the review M&G received in the Journal. That review stated that there is plenty of parking behind the store. That is only partly true. The parking has reserved signs and not for M&G customers. Furthermore, even if there were ample parking, the back door is locked, necessitating a long walk past the notorious Macdonald Lofts to get to the store. The day I visited, there was a snow ban, obliterating what little parking was available. I am disabled and needed to park in an expensive Impark lot where the machine was frozen and didn't work. Inconvenient and would have added to the expense of patronizing M&G. Yes, it is expensive to shop there. I spent $5.50 + GST for a mille feuille and a pistachio eclair, twice as much as at a grocery store near my home. Both were well done but I can't say that the mille feuille gave me twice as much joy as the ones I buy at Andy's IGA. Plus, Andy has plenty of free parking and Vallyview is definitely a cut above M&G's neighbourhood. I only bought the eclair because I wanted two mille feuilles, one for me and one for my wife. The server said that there were more in the freezer but emerged from the back to announce that the one in the display case was the entire inventory. Have you ever tried to cut a mille feuille in half? I want M&G to succeed because Edmonton has a shortage of quality French patisseries but I suggest that you wait a couple of months more and M&G may have their act together. read more

I had a savory crepe and it was yummy. I had one sweet item and it was just ok. Also, the teapot stream was messy, spilling water all over the table as I tried to pour into my cup. I want this place to do well, but I have to say though, from the look of the goods, it does not appear that they are made from scratch in-house. For a place that isn't that busy, they have too much variety for sale, and this makes me wonder about freshness. My recommendation for them as a new place: cut down on the selection and just make a few high quality in-house items from scratch. People are looking for food with integrity (home-made, from scratch, no preservatives just all natural like real butter etc.), and will go out of their way to buy it. As people come to trust your shop, you'll sell more and be able to expand. But trying to be Duchess right away won't work. Duchess worked hard to establish the integrity of their food. Get rid of the gimmicky extras like chocolates and candies that look like they were picked up from bulk barn. read more

This is the best place to get macarons in central alberta. I'm no expert but their selection and flavors are unbeatable. The customer service is awesome and the price is super reasonable as well. The downtown location is definitely bearable but I could see why some would shy away. Next time you're in the area be sure to stop by and see what you're missing out on. read more

I didn't actually go to the bakery myself. My parents brought home some baked goods from Macarons and Goodies. They said that the people who helped them were super friendly and pretty much let them picked the baked items themselves for my parents. They ALWAYS make an effort to support new business owners or small businesses. So I tried some of their baked goods and wow, I thought they were so tasty!!! I loved them! My sister loved them...they were all gone by the end of the afternoon! Next time I have some sweet cravings, I will definitely go there to try some other baked goodies! read more

I am so in love with this place I am writing reviews everywhere to tell people about it. I started off ordering in to my work for lunch from Skip the Dishes. I then began to go directly to the source. Located in not the greatest area on 101 St. in Edmonton, you immediately forget all about that once you step inside. It is a warm and cozy little patisserie-type place where goodies literally abound. I used to be addicted to their delicious eggs benedict served with salad until today. Today, I had their lunch combo for $17.95 and had the scrambled eggs with turkey and chicken bacon on a croissant. This came as well with a salad, a drink and dessert. I have found a new addiction *drool*. It was divine! I am so in love with this place and think it is the best restaurant in all of Edmonton. See you tomorrow M&G! read more

I love this place...Why one may ask does someone make a special trip to a rather questionable part of town...easy to answer...it's the Antithesis to the Dutchess. One review stated they shouldn't try to be Dutchess. Number one GOOD. I have supported Dutchess since they opened...I spent THOUSANDS yes thousands in Dutchess AND Provisions. They still treat me like a stranger. It's just NEXT...whose next. The staff rarely smile and almost seem like they are doing me a favour serving me. Don't get me wrong Dutchess has earned its stripes...however I am VERY happy they are no longer the only place in town. Having said that M&G is not TRYING to be Dutchess...or...anyone else other than themselves. They offer very good well priced treats. Try the Pear cinnamon pie if you want an authentic French delight. It's a recipe from the French Patisserie Paul, where Fadouah was Executive Chef. She and her husband are both Classically trained but that's not there idea at M&G. They are providing a service that is missing in that area...Good food, Good value, Friendly Service. Great Macarons. Unfortunately they had employed someone that did some serious damage to her. That person almost finished her...I'm grateful she did not. I love nothing more than a Saturday afternoon in a cozy chair...having a Chicken Mushroom crepe followed by some delight. IF you are looking for the Dutchess or ANY other iteration of it...keep on going. I and my Family and friends will continue our enjoyment of the place.
