Fair warning: this is lengthy but thorough! Bottom line, do not stay here unless you can see the room beforehand and know that it's clean. Also, beware of electricity charges--and charges for just about everything else, too.
We stayed at the MacDonald resort from 11/23/19-12/7/19. This was our honeymoon trip, which was generously provided by my parents, who are RCI members (we have stayed all over the US in RCI resorts and they've always been wonderful). They paid extra money just for us to be the ones to stay here instead of them, as the owners of the time share, and they also paid extra fees
The resort itself is in a gorgeous, if out of the way, location. It's dark and perfectly quiet at night, which I loved, and the unit we were in was very spacious--almost too much room for just us two. Who doesn't love having two bathrooms??
When we first checked in for our two-week stay, they sent us up to a room in the Ben Lomond Apartments. We got into the room and found that it had not been cleaned from the last occupants, and we were actually supposed to check in the day before so this was WAY behind. We told the registration staff and they quickly got us into another, identical room.
The new room was, like the previous one, super outdated. It did not look like any of the photos I saw on MacDonald's website. The vinyl floor tiles in the kitchen area were coming apart, the couch had scratches, and there was barely any toilet paper supplied. Remember, we were going to be here for two weeks--you'd think they could provide maybe two more rolls of TP without charging us to get the room cleaned entirely for a steep fee, which is probably the only way we'd have gotten more.
However, the new room was relatively clean--at least mostly, as there were still some used and almost empty shampoo bottles in the shower. About a week in, I was looking out of the bedroom window and accidentally snagged the curtains a weird way, which is when I noticed a thick line of mold in the corner next to the window that the curtain had previously been hiding (see images). It extended for almost the entire length of the wall. This caused instant alarm because 1) I have asthma and could have had serious attacks due to the mold (luckily I had my inhaler with me just in case), and 2) that's just not clean and something you'd expect from a luxury resort. The shower stall also had mold in the creases and on the ceiling above the stall. My husband informed the staff about the mold and he said they were very nonplussed about it. We certainly weren't given any special treatment to make up for it.
Another issue we had was with the electricity being billed separately. I understand this is more common in the UK than in the States, but we were told it would be metered. When we checked out, however, we were handed a bill for $70 pounds, with no metering information for proof, and which in my husband's Canadian meant $140 for electricity. This is steep in general, but more so because we weren't even staying in the unit for 6 days/5 nights total, as we were out on overnight tours twice in the two weeks. The first week, we were gone 5 days and 4 nights, and our bill was higher that week than the second, during which we were there for almost the whole week. Any time we left the unit, we unplugged and turned off the switches for everything except one radiator, per the unit instructions, and somehow ended up paying as if we'd never left the room, using every light and all the appliances. Ask my husband: I actually drove him bonkers constantly shutting off lights behind him and making us stumble around in the dark rather than turn more on.
I would not stay here again, nor would I ever recommend it. The nearby scenery and the town of Aberfoyle, 4 miles away, were really fantastic. Scotland and its people are more than fantastic. But do yourself a favor and stay in an AirBNB--they're all over the place. It'll most likely be clean, look better, have FREE wifi (we weren't charged for ours only due to the dirty room mishap on day one), and cost you less. read more
