Located in an area with lots of dining options. The huge slabs of meat might make you think it's a butcher shop and not a restaurant. Outside there are 3 large tables in a makeshift space on the street. The front room has 3 high tables and the butcher case. The back room had 6 tables in a more elegant space. We started our meal with a charcuterie of meats and burrata cheese. They brought out a fresh cut-to-order a 1.15g cut of rib eye to share for the 5 in our party. We accepted the cut requesting it cooked to medium-rare and added roasted potatoes, tomato salad, ravioli as sides. The tomato salad really complimented the ribeye well. Lastly a glass of Merlot rounded out the meal. The service was attentive. They recommended family style which was perfect and the ribeye came to the table under a dome-lid for a special reveal. We came across this place by looking at Yelp and we were not disappointed at all. First off, the place looks small from the outside, but once you get inside you realize they have seating in the back and downstairs. The meat and the butcher are prominently displayed to the left as you walk in and you are able to see the aged meats set out for the evenings dinner. The butcher is right there to cut your choice and display it for your approval before cooking. Very impressive! The staff at Macellaio RC took amazing care of my family and all of our needs. This place is a chophouse, legit. They have a full counter of beef, you select what you want, tell them how much, and they hand cut it for you right there. Now, this is really more of a "steak for the table" kind of place, they do have smaller cuts for individuals (which was great) but I suspect if you bring a group you will be even more pleased. As you walk by, it might look like it's closed, fear not, there are a couple tables up front and then the main area is further back. Very knowledgeable staff, they can explain the cuts as well as what goes well with each. They even have an edible candle- it melts and you dip your fresh bread in it- terrific. We decided to try Macellaio based on the good reviews . What a disappointment !!!!!! I don't know how he got good reviews . The ambiance is nice , the atmosphere is cool and the waiters are friendly with positive attitude . As for the food , I don't know where to start . We ordered the meat Tbone dry aged , the waiter came with a huge piece of meat at the table . Once grilled , the steak shrunk in size it was small not sure 600 grams and it was so tough and and dry . We had dry aged meat before but this one was really dry , not sure if it was dry aged . My daughter had spaghetti , the portion was so tiny and not enough sauce . We were so disappointed especially when we had to 150 £. We left the restaurant hungry and not satisfied at all . read more

You Might be forgiven for thinking this is a butchers shop not a restaurant. The shop front is indeed a window into a world of dry aged steaks and joints of 30 plus days dry aged. There is also a counter and you can buy meat there to take home. Past the counter and out the back is a restaurant that cooks and serves the meats displayed in the window. Bottom Line is if you are serious about steak or beef then this is the place in London to eat. Probably the best steak house in the Capitol. read more

Amazing--a meat eaters paradise. Had an incredible board and t-bone. The steak is super rare and is best for the person who loves a steak that is almost purple. Comes out sliced with nice coarse salt and the bone to gnaw on at the end. Also had the Tagliere Misto to start. All cuts were great but lardo was new to me, which I really enjoyed as they prepared it with the honey and walnuts. Went with a vegetarian who was able to find a couple pastas that were without meat. Maeciello is a former neighborhood butcher shop turned into one of the hottest Italian Steak houses in London. . Aging meats hang from the shop window facing the street. Steaks are cut by hand at what was formerly the front butcher counter so ask for one of the few front tables of possible. It's small intimate and charming and fun to watch the hip butcher cut steaks and shave prosciutto san Danielle. I'm not a big steak guy, but the few timed a year i do have one I expect it to be delicious. i was not disappointed. My friend and I shared a 1 kg 42 day aged rib eye which was melt in your mouth delicious. Great service and Italian wine selection. read more

I would say that this restaurant is around 3.5 stars but leaning closer to a 3 rather than 4. ~ Atmosphere: Lovely atmosphere and a perfect place to take a date. It has a really sweet, Italian rustic feeling to it and the menus are printed on newspaper! I have to admit that it took me a while to figure out where my menu was! ~ Food: The food was great - a little bit on the pricey end but it makes for a posh evening out. We ordered 700 g of steak to share along with 3 sides - mash, roasted potatoes, and spinach. We also picked up a cured meats platter for my first taste of lardo. All the food was fantastic and I definitely recommend the steak! However, everything was a bit pricey and we ended the meal (no wine) at around £35 a head. Honestly, left not really feeling too satisfied compared to how much we paid. If I'm paying £35 a head I expect to be blown away. ~ Customer Service: Where the review goes from 4 stars to 3. The customer service wasn't great at all. My partner had his knife and fork taken away at the beginning of the meal - they were in boxes and the waitress took out my knife and fork and placed it on the table - took away the box, but then just ended up taking my partner's whole box away so he had 0 cutlery. We ended up asking for cutlery for him, had to ask 3 times before they actually gave it because I don't think the waitress understood what he was saying. She also kept taking away plates when we weren't finished, but without asking. Just ask - "are you finished with this?" Easy! But nope, she would walk right up and take away unfinished plates that still had food on it. Overall the customer service was extremely bizarre. --- For such a pricey restaurant, I expected more. The service was really bad, the food was OK - but definitely not worth the price tag. Overall, I wouldn't be opposed to coming back but next time, I'd probably find somewhere else. read more

This restaurant was a complete and utter disappointment. First off, we order still water and instead we're served sparkling water that had been sitting out for a while. The bottle came pre-opened and it tasted like old Pellegrino that lost its carbonation. Then we ordered the Battuta Albese which was extremely average. My friend ordered the Striploin Burger and the slices of steak were completely raw on the outside, so when he bit into it he was basically grinding his jaw to tear apart the muscle fibers. A more accurate name for the entree is Beef Carpaccio Burger. I ordered the Raviolo al Tocco which was way too firm, but the sauce wasn't too bad. I also ordered the Maccheroni al Ragu which was cold, firm, and flavorless. The man who took away my friend's raw burger didn't even acknowledge that it was raw, he just said "oh it's not to your taste." Apart from this, the waiters and waitresses were very nice and the ambiance was pretty cool, but there is no way I'm coming back here. I think the only way to eat here is with 3-4 other people and order a £80 pound hunk of meat. We were also overcharged and stupidly paid the full-portion price for the Battuta Albese, not realizing they scammed us at first. I didn't even care to fix the issue because I just wanted to get the hell out of there. Overall a disappointing and frustrating experience. read more

There was a complete disregard for specification on the menu in terms of what was supposed to be cooked and what was supposed to be raw. The food took over 25 minutes to be served which was odd seeing as almost everything we ordered was either raw or served cold when it was meant to be hot. The pasta was cold and seemed as though it was a day old tasting stale and tough to chew. The tartare was completely lacking in every aspect, specifically the taste, leaving both of our stomachs upset. The sirloin burger was a complete catastrophe being served as basically a carpaccio burger with low quality meat that made it impossible to take a bite out of as the differing positions of the slices of meat made it so that you could not eat with the grain. The sirloin burger was also bland, only tasting of the sauce and I could not eat more than a bite and had to send it back. There was a very loud group of people situated in the back corner of the dining room which made it impossible to hear myself think alongside the horrible pop music remixes that they continuously played throughout the two hours we suffered there. And to top it all off they tried to charge me for the food I sent back and when we noticed acted cross and then simply overcharged us double for a 9 pound starter so that they could fulfill their greedy desires. We also ordered still water which we had to pay for but then received an opened bottle of random "water" that was actually just sparkling water that had been sitting out till the carbonation subsided. The only somewhat redeemable quality of this restaurant was their wine selection but that only served to drown out the taste of the food. Overall I would rate my experience here a 1/10 and I will never be giving this restaurant my business again. read more

The meat at Maxela is melt-in-your-mouth deeeelicious. Sadly, the service isn't so heavenly! A friend and I visited Maxela a bit earlier than the normal dinner crowd so we were the only diners at the restaurant for at least 20-30 mins..which is why it was a bit frustrating that we had to wave our waiter over to order a bottle of wine. Three different bottles of white wine are on the menu, but they were out of stock on the two reasonably priced options. After ordering, our server never stopped by to check on us after delivering our super tasty Tagliere Misto and we had to flag him down for another basket of bread. Finally, what's up with the music at this place? 80's love ballads? I don't think I've heard Toni Braxton, Michael Bolton or Wind Beneath my Wings in at least 20 years! read more

I was in South Kensington and, after checking some reviews, decided that Macellaio sounded interesting. A coworker and I walked over from our hotel for dinner. When you walk in, the first thing you notice is all the meat in a meat locker, which is pretty impressive if you are a carnivore such as I. Another thing that is a bit unusual is they bring out the raw cut first and give you the option to okay it before they grill it. This is not something I have seen in the US before, so it was a pretty cool experience. It also means the size isn't predefined, so if a piece of meat is either too small or too big, you can request a different one. They offer many cuts of meat, and after poring over the menu for a bit, I decided to go with the Costata del Macellaio, essentially a ribeye steak. I also ordered grilled vegetables and spinach as sides. I like my ribeye medium rare, and it was definitely cooked medium rare. It came out trimmed of the fat and sliced into many long pieces while still being in the shape of the original cut of meat. The steak was good, but it wasn't great, and I was a bit nonplussed by it being pre-sliced for me. There wasn't much seasoning, and the steak overall was a bit bland, which is surprising given that ribeye is typically one of the most flavorful steaks. My steak was a beast, weighing in at nearly 20 ounces (or just over half a kilogram for those who don't use the American measurement system), and yet it overall was a bit of a disappointment. Maybe I have just been spoiled by the super high end grain fed beef we get in the US, but I was not impressed with the steak. The sides were also interesting. The grilled vegetables were marinated and served in a cylindrical lump, which I found to be an odd presentation. They tasted good but again not great, and they definitely weren't exactly what I was expecting. I did really enjoy the spinach, which was sauteed with garlic and chili. It had a nice flavor and was really quite good, though it did border on having too much garlic. I wanted to try some dessert, so I chose the Latte Dolce Fritto, which were like sweet cream filled fritters with sugar on the outside. They had a nice light batter and a very nice creamy inside that was sweet and refreshing. They weren't very heavy and were a nice way to end the meal. The atmosphere was nice inside and definitely felt cozy and warm. The service was exceptional, and our waiter was very helpful and attentive. The quality of the food was good, but the steak was not up to my standards, and as a result I felt like it was a bit pricey. I really wanted to like Macellaio more than I did, but I felt like it was fairly pedestrian. It is definitely worth going to for the atmosphere, and perhaps there are other cuts of meat there I would like better, but a ribeye is one of my litmus tests for a steak house, and it did not pass. read more

We came here for my husband's 30th birthday!! He wanted steak for his bday meal, and our friend recommended this place. When you first walk in, you are greeted with their fresh meat in the front of the restaurant. And while waiting for our table, we watched the guys preparing beef tartare, carpaccio, butchering meat, and such... Drooling begins haha We made reservation for 8:30pm but our table was not ready when we arrived, so they say is at the bar while setting our table. We ordered carpaccio and mozzarella for appetizer, t-bone for 2, a side dish and gnocchi for mains, 2 bottles of wine (for 3 of us) and tiramisu for dessert. Good was amazing!!! Meat was really fresh and the steak was cooked to perfection! The gnocchi was very good too. We had a great meal and the check came up to be about £200 for the 3 of us for very good quality food. Dinner was great but I do have some critical feedback that I'll save for the end. We started with the beef heart which was intimidating but it's comes as thinly sliced beef, like gyro meat really, and is very rich. The cream it comes with added nothing but their homemade bread went well. Next for our main we did a 600 gram (~22oz) ribeye mid rare to medium. It's thick so I'd go a step or half step above your normal temp. Grilled simply and finished with flaky sea salt, it was amazing. We also had the tagliatelle. It was a touch too al dente and the ragu was dry. I'd pass next time. The gnocchi however was decedent and rich and fantastic. We also had the fennel and mandarin salad which was delightful and cut the richness of the other dishes wonderfully. We finished with the pineapple and cheese platter. It's a lot of Parmesan which we took half away, but was delightful to try. Lastly, the service was mediocre at best. In our time in England service starts strong then quickly fades. All well and good but then the hostess began stopping by and advising we were coming up on 2 hours and our table was reserved later. We were ready to continue through our meal at several junctions but the service was slow and inattentive and we had to be chastised for it; all despite no one being at the door waiting either. This is a big opportunity for this place. Otherwise, smashing experience and we would return when back in London. read more

How...how have I not already done a review of Macellaio?! I spend half my life there... First of all, I'd recommend always booking a table - it's often packed to the rafters, and rightly so. The staff are all wonderful people. They're really informative, helpful and a little bit cheeky! They do a mean Negroni, which is great if you're waiting for a table, or even just whilst you're perusing the adorable menus which come in newspaper format. The restaurant has a butchers counter at the front and you can see (and pick) which meat you want for your meal. The steaks are sublime, perfectly cooked and the staff can help you decide which size you need. Also, shout out to the battuta starter, which is an Italian steak tartare. I dream of that dish. I almost forgot - as well as having an excellent wine list, they also offer BYOB (with a corkage fee). Top tip - head to Sampler before you go to Macellaio and pick out a bottle or three. The meal was all about the meat and they did a very good job of preparing our steak. We are visitors to London but did not feel like this was a tourist trap of any sort. Butcher shop meets (and meats!) neighbourhood Italian restaurant in this popular eatery on Old Brompton Road. From the outside it looks like an unassuming butcher shop with large cuts of meat hanging in the window, however the red leather sofa outside gives away that inside is quite a trendy hangout. Small inside space of white and red tile and butcher counter complete with the butcher cutting the meat while tartare dishes being prepared, and all fresh off the chopping block. High wooden tables are cramped and close together making the most of every inch of space. Music is playing and on a Saturday night this place is quite the hip hangout. But probably the best sign that this is a place worth eating at is that Italians of all ages were eating here as well. Things did get off to a rocky start, mainly due to our reservation. We booked our table for 10:15pm as that was all that was left on that Saturday night. We go, on time and we are told our table is still not available as the prior party was finishing up. So we waited, outside on the pavement (with the smokers) as it is way to cramped and crowded inside to wait there. And we waited... and waited... over 1/2 an hour for them to honour our booking and give us our table! To be honest if I hadn't been with friends I would have left. However once seated and food on the table things shifted for the better. The food was delicious and the quality of the meat was outstanding. As for the trimmings I especially enjoyed the Fagioli beans that were like butter, and the livers were scrumptious. We finished off with the house Tiramisu which was their own recipe and light and fluffy. To top it all off the wine choices were exciting, varied, and not your run of the mill. Very enjoyable but crowded and cramped. Prepare yourself for waiting and being pushed around a bit, but once you taste the goods you will find it is worth it all in the end. Do you like steak? Was that a rhetorical question? My wife suggested this place for a steak dinner. I was skeptical that a steak restaurant in south ken would be as good as a place like Goodmans. That thought immediately disappeared when we walked to the restaurant and saw all of the steak hanging in the window. The staff were really attentive and really passionate about their food. Since our reservation was at 7:30pm the restaurant was a bit quiet so had the chance to speak to the man behind the meat counter. He gave an indepth talk about where their meat was sourced from and that they age their meat for 6 weeks. We had the carpaccio meat sharing plate. The steak tartare was great but equally as good was the burrata cheese. The t-bone steak which we got weighed in just under 1kg. The fillet portion of the t-bone was melt in your mouth goodness. #MELTINYOURMOUTH It was delicious. The rock salt on the steak could have been a lot more maybe next time we'll get the extra sauce with the steak. Service was great as they were all happy and friendly. Adding to the drama of dinner theatre, the way they brought out the steak knives and steak itself was something fun to see in a restaurant. Delicious steak at affordable prices. Maxela is a must-visit for every steak lover. Maxela, "The Italian Butchery with Tables", is a little steakhouse not far from South Kensington station in South West London. Since the tube strikes in early 2014, I began walking to work about once a week. And on the way, I often walked past Maxela - it looked like a nice place, but it took me a few months to make it there for dinner. It is a little bit embarrassing, but at first I missed Maxela by one door and went into the neighbouring restaurant. Not a bad place either, but as soon as I noticed it, I decided to get a starter and then make a move. On my second attempt, I walked through the right door. From the outside, Maxela looks a bit like a butcher shop, and initially I thought this is a deli and the restaurant is next door. But do not let the meat on display fool you, behind the door is a lovely little steakhouse, not just a butcher shop. Immediately, I was approached by a very friendly waitress with a beautiful smile. She almost had to send me away because they were quite busy, but I guess after I made a sad face, she gave the restaurant a second look and found me a place. I had to share the table with a Canadian guy and a couple, but that was perfectly fine, and now I think sharing a table matches the overall atmosphere of this tiny meat paradise very well. I skipped the starters and went straight into the main menu. Many dishes sounded delicious and it was difficult to decide, but at the end I went with a sliced Fassone beef steak with caramelised pears and aged balsamic vinegar. I combined the steak with a fruity red Montepulciano and french fries. Not long after I ordered, a waiter brought my food. It looked beautiful. The french fries were salty, dark and crispy, I think skin-on. No question, the star of the evening was the heavenly Fassone beef steak. It was cooked medium-rare and spiced perfectly. The steak was full of flavour and I really liked the combination with caramelised pears, which were a nice contrast to the steak and added a light freshness to the dish. After finishing my steak, I ordered "latte dolce fritto" or "fried sweet milk". To be honest, I had no idea what this meant, but when the waitress recommended it with her winning smile, I could not resist - and I did not regret this decision. The dessert was delicious, yet not very heavy and some of the fritters were even filled with Nutella. Overall, I think Maxela is undoubtedly one of the best steakhouses in London. The place has a great, relaxed, friendly and personal atmosphere. At the counter right next to the entrance you can see how the meat is cut, which just adds to the excitement. Maxela feels like a honest and authentic restaurant, and most importantly, the steak tastes excellent. I cannot recommend Maxela in South Kensington highly enough. read more
