As a family we discuss mental health openly & our daughter recently said she needed "professional help" and that talking things through with us is not enough. I went online to look at options in the Sugar Land area. Luckily Dr. Epperson is not far & our daughter drives so this was convenient. Dr. Epperson has been able to establish trust with our daughter very quickly & our anxious daughter has been blossoming under her care. They are trying different approaches, medication, dosages and i could not be happier with their success. This is my first experience with anxiety in any form so far and I am thankful for Dr. Epperson and the relationship she was able to develop with our daughter. The two of them do conference call appointments if that works best for my daughter's busy schedule & I love hearing her happy voice while she gives Dr. Epperson her weekly updates!

It's not one of those places that just runs you through a system you can tell they actually care about what happens to you after you leave. Toyin and Amir made a huge difference in my experience. They're the kind of people who don't just listen to respond, they actually hear you and meet you where you're at. There were moments I didn't even feel like opening up, but they knew how to create a space where it didn't feel forced or fake. That's rare. What I appreciated most is that nothing felt performative. The conversations were real, the support was real, and the guidance actually stuck with me outside of the program. I walked in not really knowing what to expect, and left with way more clarity and structure than I had before. If you're on the fence about Menninger or the Bridge Program, just know there are people there who genuinely care and want to see you win. Toyin and Amir are a big part of that.

I also find it notable that the clinic relocated to Texas in 2003, the same year major tort reforms made malpractice cases more difficult for patients to win. The way I was admitted many years ago would be considered far below the standards of best practice in more patient oriented states. If you are aggrieved in any way, they tell you to speak to a Patient Advocate who I experienced as not advocating for me, but protecting the institution in my talks with them. I did not get a promised call back or email back. I personally consider the Menninger Clinic a profit driven disgrace to the mental healthcare field.

Usually places of business &business cell phones are answered by identifying the business. Should've been my first warning! He tells me the times he's available and I pick one, but after hanging up I realize he hasn't asked for my name or anything. Showed up for my first appointment made 2 days ago and the door was locked. Knocked, no one was there. Called to see if maybe he just stepped out of the office, but NO ANSWER! I left a message and 15 minutes later PLUS 25 minutes after my appointment time and no return call or text. I purchased the sessions through Groupon for a hundred and something. Needless to say I will be calling them for a refund -_-

The cops showed up courtesy of a friendly soul and took me to the loony bin. When I got out I was referred to MHMRA, now the Harris Center, and saw counselors, attended group sessions, got free meds, and such. They were known for their 3-4 hour wait times to see your doctor but overall they helped me a lot. During the later years of my time there I was only seeing my psychiatrist every three months and my caseworker would visit my home every few months or so. I had been a pretty high-functioning patient for many years and was down to only two meds at that time. But the meds were free so I kept going. And they had miraculously cut the waiting time for appointments down to around 30 minutes. But in early 2021 I went to see my doctor. After about 2 1/2 hours they told me that she couldn't see me that afternoon. To add insult to injury, when I asked when I could reschedule they said in another three months! I needed a refill on my meds but couldn't wait three frickin' months! I was so pissed I just left with a few choice words for the staff. Apparently, this was yet another case of a doctor's time being more valuable than her patient's. I couldn't find another reasonably priced psychiatrist so I went for months without my Zoloft and Wellbutrin. In the past when I went without my meds for weeks I had dizziness, spells of mental "fogginess", paranoia, you name it. But something funny happened this time. I was fine and my thoughts were clear. I checked with an old therapist from years before and she said I might be in remission from my OCD and depression. It's been over a year now and mentally I'm doing fine. And there is another silver lining to all of this. It's because of screw-ups like these that I have decided to use my writing business for investigative reporting and mental health issues. See you on the web.
