Otley is not as posh as Ilkley, and so Otley's biggest butcher is not as posh as Ilkley's - but it's just as good in its own way. The prices are slightly cheaper all round because the quality isn't strictly as "high" but I doubt many people could really taste the difference. They stock a surprisingly wide variety of meat, and like all good butcher's, they aren't afraid to dispense with a few secret recipe tips when they hand you your chosen slabs of meat. One thing that puts this butcher's above many others in my book is its homemade pastries - I get a little pork pie every time I'm in Otley from here, and it's glorious every time.

They stock all the good cuts that you might be looking for and despite being an indie butchers aren't too expensive. It's so frustrating that the huge supermarket chains have grown to the capacity they have today as it really wipes out the need for such caring indie shops like Weegmans. However, by the sheer number of customers, it's good to see that this hasn't been a problem. As well as all the tasty fresh meat produce they serve hot meat sandwiches, yum if you're not vegetarian, and some of the nicest pork pies around. All in all a total gem.

They appear to have as much of an array of bits as any other butchers, with lots of tasty cuts on show from proper Sunday lunch meats to more day to day bacon style choices. One thing that I thought was particularly cool was that you could purchase ready made mixes for stir fry - thai chicken, pork and beef stir fry mixes for about £4 per lb. That's not too bad as a one off now is it? It was a little disappointing to see things such as Colemans sauce packets on sale, I like to get my indie jams, sauces and chutneys from a local butcher, as opposed to some big company ready made that is packed with preservatives. The food itself was fairly good though - I only had chips but they were piping hot and greasy, just the way they should be. The chaps in there are really friendly and the whole place has that down to earth counter service approach with a whole variety of meats to choose from. The shop front entices you in with its cheeky appearance and what I think is a brilliant name for a fish restaurant, and on my visit the takeaway was packed (it was around 5PM so that made sense), however service was quicker than I expected it to be. What struck me about the cod & chips I got was the utter lack of grease, which made a refreshing change as I didn't have to wipe my lips after every bite and I also felt slightly less guilty about eating deep-fried goods. They tasted splendid to be honest, and the prices were so reasonable that I'm thinking of going back and checking out the restaurant. It's won awards, and I can see why.

They've their little sandwich board out the front detailing the latest offers and research on vitamins and extracts so you are always in the know. For those beef cake types they have all the necessary (and I use that word loosely...) products that help you to buff up to your heart's delight sans the 'roids. Homeopathic remedies are also on sale here, as are herbal teas, natural honeys, nuts and all the usual goodness! The door may be a little off-putting as it's hard to see in, but don' be put off as it's pretty friendly inside!

I wanted coffee and I wanted a sandwich so I decided to try my luck at Cranberry. I was greeted immediately by a lovely lady who smiled beautifully and took my order. I decided to go for a ham and cheese hot sandwich and coffee. I also had a can of dandelion and burdock, partly as I was thirsty but mostly because I'd not had it in yonks. I went to sit down on the awkward high stools and the wonderful lady came over and asked me if I'd like to have a table put out next to the leather seats instead! I said that would be great, so long as it wasn't in anyone's way, and she assured me it would be fine. She took my things, placed them down for me and was totally lovely about the whole thing. Fantastic stuff! My sandwich was pretty good, although not exactly gourmet, and my coffee was delicious. I think next time I will try the home made soup, as many customers were complimenting it as they left, but I will almost certainly be back here for a respite session when I'm next in Otley. It is one of the most friendly and welcoming places I've ever been and I couldn't have been more delighted with the service! It's a small shame my sandwich didn't live up to the ladies' service.
