Mackinac Wheels Bike Store - Stop 1

Mackinac Wheels Bike Store

We asked a local which bike rental shop they would recommend, and they recommended Mackinac Wheels…read moreBike Store without hesitation. Not only did he recommend it because it's a great company, but also because it is the only locally owned bike rental shop around. We always prefer to shop local! We were so grateful for this advice because it turned out to be an excellent bike rental experience! First, we loved that the shop is a little off the beaten path so that it is not swarming with tourists. As a result, we got immediate and helpful service from the friendly and helpful workers. The staff were super helpful and answered all of our questions. We were so thrilled about how quick it took us from arriving to leaving on bikes. Quick, easy, and welcoming service! One of our favorite parts was the payment plan. The bike rentals with necessities like helmets are $15 per hour. However, they have flexible pricing by up to 15 minutes. As a result, since we only rode for an hour and a half, we only had to pay $45. What an incredible deal! This flexibility in pricing alone is a reason to prefer Mackinac Wheels over other bike rentals. We loved our bikes. I had the bright turquoise blue bike and my spouse had a navy blue bike. These colors made them easy to find when we stopped at popular pull offs, like the Arch overlook. The bikes were comfortable, catered to our heights/needs, and high quality. We could have ridden them all day! And most importantly, the bikes helped us to have a wonderful experience on Mackinac Island! We did the entire perimeter route of the island, stopping at the Arch, the northern most point of the island, the British Landing, Chimney Rock, Devil's Kitchen, and other photo worthy spots. We were able to do it all in an hour and a half! When we got back, the drop-off was as smooth as the pickup. The staff sent us off with a kind word and advice for the rest of the day. All in all, our experience with Mackinac Wheels was extremely positive. If we are ever back on the island, we will definitely do our rentals through Mackinac Wheels again! Don't get stuck in the tourist traps, head over to Mackinac Wheels today!

The bikes weren't all new but they worked. The price was right and the people very friendly.read more

It's just off of Main Street north of Great Turtle. The owner greeted me right away and got me set up with an Island Comfort Special multi-speed cruiser. They swipe your credit card but do not charge you until you return the bike. My bike was $19/hr, and it's pro-rated after the first hour. They provide a bike lock, bottle of water, and bike map and make sure the bike is the proper fit for you before you take off. They did not offer me a helmet, but it looks like they are available upon request. As the name suggests, they also have mobility scooters which is an excellent way for people to see the island if mobility is a challenge. In all my visits to Mackinac Island, I had never biked the island. What a beautiful way to explore! There is SO much more to this place than the busy Main Street. I thoroughly enjoyed my ride on the Trek bicycle. It was easy to ride, but I did notice it was heavy enough that the kickstand didn't keep it upright very well the times I did stop to soak in the views. At the end, they gave me coupons to some great local businesses, Great Turtle and Sanders. If you visit in the fall, I'm told the bikes are on sale, if you'd like to take one home with you. Will definitely be using this service again!

The worker was friendly but his computer crashed and he was unable to rent bikes because of it. He said it happens at least once a day, which is not great for business when bike shops are pretty plentiful. He asked what bikes we wanted and he set them aside. He asked for us to wait until his computer started up again. We sat out front and waited and within 15 or so minutes we were back in business. We got 7 speed bikes and a card is needed on file before you take your bikes out. Baskets for your bikes are provided. Our bikes were in decent condition. My bike gears were worn out, so you couldn't tell your settings. Not horrible since we were just biking around the island. The coupon helped our total for the price of two bikes that we had taken out all day.

Staff took great care of us, sized my kids well for the right bikes, and were pleasant to chat with through the whole process. By the end of the trip, my five year old didn't want to turn his bike in. "This is the awesome-est bike ever!" were his exact words. Thank you Island House Bikes for helping us have a great day!

We were looking for an adventure with our new-ish kayaks. We fortuitously read a Michigan tourism magazine tucked into the Chicago Tribune; the magazine featured a story about kayaking in Les Cheneaux with Woods & Waters. It sounded great! Though we are comfortable on the water, we thought it would be good to have a guide in an area new to us -- and Tim was a perfect guide for our half-day paddle! We learned so much about this beautiful and interesting area, saw an eagle and its nest, did a quick mid-paddle hike to get an amazing view to go with our rock skipping and gained a few kayaking skill tips that will make us better kayakers. It certainly was a bonus that the water and weather cooperated -- water like glass and just enough sun. Tim - thanks for the advice to do the Narnia hike - that was our afternoon adventure! We ended our day at Les Cheneaux Distillers. The day couldn't have been better. We loved our paddle so much and felt comfortable with our newfound knowledge from Tim that we went back for a quick paddle the next morning. We wish we could have stayed on the water all day! Thank you Sue and Tim. We will see you next time!
