Plastic tree! This is a giant plastic Christmas tree that Macy's puts up in the middle of Union Square, overlooking the department stores that surround the Square. It's decorated with giant bulbs, and twinkling lights with a star atop. It's a nice photo opportunity if you wish. Wanna get a birds eye view of it all? Check out the glass elevators next door that allow for a extra cool view at night. I guess since everything in San Francisco is eco-friendly, it makes sense not to cut down a giant tree every year, but that's what most cities do... When I went, they were starting to work on taking it down, which wasn't so festive. The only gift I found under the tree was one that an urban camping enthusiast left behind... The Christmas tree is looking particularly beautiful this year - yes I was in the area for the ceremony - and I appreciate that it was staggered with the Jack London square event. So the Macy's Christmas tree is up and running. I've got so many memories of hanging around one year with a bunch of friends back in 2006 and it was an awesome day. Everybody was there except the kid brother - still disappointed I guess... and this is 13 years later. I think of these as pseudo events yet I still eat them up!!! I recommend camping at the Cheescake Factory - its comfortable and there is a cool bar and the views are unbeatable. Nurse a few beers and tip the bartender so they can make their rent payment... It ain't Rockefeller Center, but it's our own. I've been to two Christmas Tree lighting ceremony, and I've learned a couple of lessons. The closer you are, the less you see...unless you're in the front row front and center. But I wouldn't recommend that either, particularly if you hate the crowd. Yes, get ready for a huge crowd. I tend to be leery of a large crowd especially during the holidays. I'm always thinking about safety first and I don't want to become a victim of a stupid terrorist act in case they try to pull one off. Also, there's lots of pushing and shoving before they actually light the tree. The best place to be during the lighting ceremony is either booking a reservation at the Cheesecake Factory and watching it live from there, or get at room at the Westin St. Francis Hotel facing Union Square. Unless you're lucky enough to be shopping at Macy's or working at the other surrounding buildings, it's better to have a birds-eye-view rather than being in the thick of things down below. The tree is gorgeous, especially at night when the lights are glowing and shining. You have the background of Macy's to the South of the square and St. Francis Hotel to the West. Pretty Pretty! SITREP My sweet Diana and I were able to hit Union Square two Wednesdays in a row to take in the beautiful tree, all decked out with it's LARGE BALLS and FURRY decorations! It's a gorgeous tree that stays lighted very late (it was still on when we left the Square around midnight each of those nights. OTHER FUN There is also the Ice Skating Rink right there on Union Square, and Diana and I love to go snooping around inside some of the "ritzy" Hotels in the hood. GREAT FUN! LOGISTICS If at all possible, walk to Union Square and avoid the huge parking costs of the garage and/or the parking nightmare of trying to find a spot close by. As it is, Diana and I are "walkers/hikers" and since we accomplishing a lot of different tasks - dinner at Bangkok Gardens, coffee at Coffee Bean, shopping at Macy's and H & M, clubbing at Cat Club - it was just easier for us to park in SOMA. Since my bro and I never ever saw this lighting event... we both decided this year would be the year. We came around 5 and it wasn't as crowded as I expected. BUT boy was I wrong! As soon as we got settled onto our spot... we turned around and boom... it was like the Giants parade all over again! We couldn't believe how many people were out there! It was interesting to say the least... Macy's decided to do the singing before the lighting and that was a mistake. It was freezing... people came to see the tree lit... give it to them! The crowd got rowdy and started yelling "LIGHT THE TREE" and others added "effen TREE" in there as well. There goes the holiday spirit! To the Macy's organizers: keep it simple. Sing one song... Light the tree... then give the people the option to either stay or leave after the event. No need to drag it all out for the people to get rowdy and rude and at the end, the holiday spirit went out the door just like that. In the end... we came and we saw... our first and probably our last time EVER doing that again! PS: if you have a toddler or a baby... NOT WORTH bringing them here. It was pretty cool watching the tree get put together like an onion ring tower at Red Robin. This gigantic tree lights up the entire square and not only rings in the festive holiday season, but acts like a giant bug catcher too, except with humans. It is so damn packed once the tree goes up, that you won't even be able to cross one side of the sidewalk to the other without running into 50 people and 5 strollers. But it is pretty. And makes for great photos. And with the Ice Rink right next to it, it is loud, joyful, and playful. It also becomes the meeting center place for protests, Santacon, marching bands, flash mobs, and whatever else comes rolling through San Francisco in December. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! Boycott Macy's Tree Lighting ceremony this year! The Stationary Engineers Local 39 is on strike! They refuse to pay their Stationary Engineers a decent wage but they can spend all this money on the tree? How can a company this large refuse to pay market rate wages, while charging above market rates for their boutiques and leased shops? Macy's says they can't afford the wages. The engineers are the ones who keep the buildings working and open. (All Nor-Cal Macy's and Reno stores engineers are on strike.) But they CAN afford to throw money away with a tree that encourages people to gather and potentially spread COVID-19. read more

Parking and traffic in the vicinity is expensive and often impossible to navigate. Anyway, always a lovely sight to check out the Macy's Christmas Tree in Union Square (though I swear it's my first time actually doing so). Even though I haven't been able to attend this tree lighting ceremony just yet (as of the 2013 Holiday Season), it's certainly an awesome sight and good for photo opportunities. Yeah... A review of a Christmas Tree on December 28th. It's the same personality trait that led to a walloping from FedEx for shipping gifts at the last minute: Procrastination. (BTW - I'm going to buy FedEx stock before the holidays next year.) I'm a Mid-westerner. This is the time of year for sledding, playing hockey at the park, having to plug your car into a block-heater so it will start in the morning, questioning why your parents didn't realize that California exists, and the one and only part of winter that is pleasant in the Midwest - the holiday season. I'm not supposed to be wearing shorts. There definitely aren't supposed to be palm trees. And, I'm pretty sure this is not the time of year that you hit the Christmas Tree before heading to the beach. ... ... ... Well, this is the West Side. The rules simply don't apply to us. All kidding aside, this is my favorite place to be (that doesn't serve alcohol) to get into the holiday spirit. Union Square is already a great experience - even working downtown every day it is still a place to stop and take in. Add the tree, add the skating rink, add the holiday tourists and it turns into a terrific juxtaposition of Urban California and Christmas Cheer. This is a beautiful tree, too - and it's beautiful both by day and by night. There's holiday magic here. Maybe it doesn't have the fame of Rockefeller Plaza. But, I think you'll find the environment to be pretty darn festive, none-the-less. If you plan on visiting during the holiday season, put it on your list. If you're a local, make a point of going, but go when it's not SantaCon. And my super-secret tip: Check it out from the Starlight Room at the top of the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. Finally i get to see our SF's tall pride, 'Big Xmas Tree' (that's how I fondly call it) at Union Square. That's our golden tree standing Tall & B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L, all glittery & sparkly, located right across the front of Macy's. This year, the beau took me to the Union Square tree lighting for my first time ever! So here are some tips for those who'd like to attend the next annual lighting. - If possible, take public transit! It totally beats saving money and time to find a parking spot. - Come early! It's on Black Friday so you can imagine how crazy Union Square is. - We actually drove and left San Jose around 2pm and still couldn't find street parking. So we parked in one of the parking garages that was a $32 flat at the most (I think it was $3 every 30 minutes?). Serious money jerker but he was so tired of driving around to find a spot with a ridiculous amount of people walking by. - If you want to have dinner during the tree lighting or shortly after it happened, go straight to Cheesecake Factory and put your name down! We put our name down around 3:30pm and was told it was a 3-hour wait. O_O However, at the time it was perfect because I didn't want to eat there until the tree lighting began. NOTE: The pager only works on the floor where Cheesecake resides and the one below it. Just make sure you come 30 minutes before you are to be seated and definitely keep checking in! They may have lost your name on the waitlist like they did mine. - 30 minutes or even more before the tree lighting (this year it was at 6:40pm), ditch the crowds and come to Cheesecake Factory and go outside to their balcony. Snag a spot behind the Macy's sign and stay there! You can't really hear the performances, but I only cared for the actual tree lighting so it was fine with me. We were seated after the tree lighting but since we were a party of two, they seated us right at the edge of the balcony, where I was able to have the gorgeous view of the tree and ice skating rink. By the time we finished dinner, the crowds had disappear and there was absolutely no traffic going home. It was a perfect day! read more

Parking was nearly impossible to find. All garages were marked as full. Lucky us, we've managed to find one around the corner. Fee was $4.00 per half an hour. It was very crowded. Thanks to Meredith O who submitted the event, on Black Friday I stopped by to check out the lighting ceremony for the Christmas tree at Union Square. The place was super crowded due to the nature of the location, tourism, shopping, and the seasonal ice skating rink that occupied a huge chunk of the space. The tree was an 85 footer hailed from Mount Shasta and a gift from Macy's to the City. Prior to the countdown there were a series of music performances and announcements about a fundraiser that benefits the UCSF Children's hospital and children with life threatening illnesses. According to Meredith who wrote, "anyone can sponsor a light bulb to illuminate the tree ($5); and all proceeds go directly to the UCSF Children's Hospital's palliative care program, which supports families whose children have life-threatening illnesses". This is another reason why our nation needs universal health care in the worst way possible in order to sustain any kind of long term support for those in dire need of care. With the entire perimeter blocked off and the crowd spilled over to the other side of the street, the music was ongoing while there were small giveaways randomly tossed into the crowd. I thought the organizers could have the stage raised higher with jumbo screens and more speakers to pump up the crowd. Even with my location, which was close to the newscasters and the tree, I was not able to get a good visual or hear anything clearly. Interestingly, I was standing next to a family with three very naughty little girls and they were suddenly quiet when Santa went on stage to ask who has been behaving this past year. Moments later, Mayor Gavin Newsom led the countdown with his wife as the crowd in the thousands went nuts when countless twinkling lights lit up with red and gold ornaments to adorn the tree. Overall I think there were some improvements that need to be made to provide the crowd a better visual and sound system, but otherwise the event was family friendly and worth checking out. 3 stars for the event + 5 stars for the cause and the tree = 4 stars rating read more

Walking through Union Square very, very early this morning, before the shops opened, I cried a little remembering all the years I've spent marveling at this wondrous giant of a tree. I sipped my coffee and stared up at the globe-sized ornaments and remembered how much bigger it all looked when I was a little girl. I remembered walking around it hand in hand with my first love. And I thought of all the wonderful little children I've brought to enjoy the tree over the years I've volunteered with and worked with the homeless and underpriveleged. I wondered how many of them had been back and how many of them might remember sipping hot cocoa and singing christmas carols around that tree. I am not drunk, friends. It is only 1 p.m., after all. The cold dark place where my heart once was may just have come back to life a little this morning. And all because of that damn tree smack in the middle of Union Square. In a city as beautiful and magical as San Francisco, it is so very lovely to have these monumental memories and opportunities for new memories every year. Much like the Folsom Street Fair, The Exotic Erotic Ball, and The Power Exchange, The Christmas Tree in Union Square is a San Francisco institution I am proud to hold dear to my heart. Seeing the Macy's Christmas Tree in Union Square is an annual tradition for my boyfriend and I. Not only is it a great photo op with the tree itself, you can also see the rest of Union Square festively decorated, visit the ice skating rink and have great views of the decorated Macy's store windows across the street. Weekends tend to get crowded with lots of visitors taking pictures and posing near the tree. It doesn't help that this year, there is a ton of construction near Union Square so the scenery is a bit marred by that. Still, it's a festive tradition and fun to see folks getting in the Christmas spirit. An eighty foot Christmas tree. Huge, tall, how in the world did they get that big tree into the Union Square. Possibly helicopter, long flatbed truck, who knows. Macy's sponsors this event and this would be the 21st annual tree lighting. The festivities included different acts such as the Cal Men's acapella group, Glide's musical chorus group, Shrek and Katherine McPhee of American Idol fame, Barry Zito of the SF Giants and then a short speech by Macy's Managers. Something for everyone. A great way to start the Holiday season. Logistics....fortunately my friends had arrived before me and secured a spot to see because it was standing room only. The surrounded streets were also cordoned off to allow for festivities watchers. The event lasted approximately one hour long with a audience countdown to flip the switch and turn on the lights. A wonderful time for people of all ages and with no rain it was a truly festive event. Get there early, leave the stroller at home and take public transportation. Well.....since Im a native san franciscan and have been going to union square my entire life at all times of the year, I can say that Christmas time is definitely my favorite time on the square. The tree has been better in the past (as had the square itself!) and I miss the City of Paris fabulous department store in what is now Neiman Marcus, but the ice skating and the lights are really a joy in the heavily trafficked area. The two downsides are scarce parking and panhandler/beggers EVERYWHERE. I mean everywhere. Leave your purse in your car as its so not worth it to be constantly hassled and begged ever 5 seconds. Go at least once just to experience it. While you are in town, visit Grace Cathedral and the Fairmont hotel for more Christmas fun! read more

It's a very tall and beautiful Christmas tree, which of course attracts a lot of tourist. With that being said, don't be surprised if you get someone else in your picture. I just wish that I got to see it and take pictures of it at night time with all of it's lights on. read more

Went to the Union Square Christmas Tree lighting, and boy what do you expect..A BIG AS$ CROWD OF PEOPLE GETTING IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT!! It's CUTE, it's ROMANTIC, it's COLD, and it'sFULL OF A LOT OF PEOPLE TRYING TO TAKE PICTURES WITH THE CHRISTMAS TREE! If I were you, I'd go early in the morning like around 2AM and take a picture with the tree! For sure there wont be tons of people in your way! The christmas tree is beautiful though.
