The Mad Potter is so much fun! It has become my weekly "therapy" with my friends from work! We are able to bring in pizza, wine, dessert and paint and laugh!!! There are a LOT of things to paint, from kitschy to practical! The color choices are immense! There are paints that don't require any thinking at all as well as paints for detailed work!! Some pieces are pricey and there is a sitting fee to consider but if you don't finish a piece, you are able to come back as many times as you need to finish it with just the one-time sitting fee for that piece. Had a marvelous time on a Monday night here!! This place is next door to my two older daughter music lessons. Every Monday and Thursday we wait on them and look into the window of Mad Potter. This time my 5 year old finally convinced me to go in and paint while we wait. We had a blast!! I now regret going in because this may become a regular waiting spot!! Someone please help my pocket book!! LOL. So, the young lady working there was so nice and patient with my daughter. My daughter had the time of her life and ordered all of us around. We painted matching baller slippers. As I said she was bossing me that night. The best part is that we painted them on Monday and when we go back this week, one week later, we will pick up our finished product!! We are so excited!!! How it works is so simple too. You pick out anything you want to paint. Then your paints and yes the employee will help you make sure it goes together and then you sit down and paint. My family comes here every year for some Christmas pottery and this year.The employees where rude and aggressive to my family if your family or party is bigger then 7 don't go because there is little to no room to walk around. Very nice place for a date, or a family outing. I visited on a Saturday afternoon when there was not much business. The staff was helpful when I had a question, but I felt like I had to interrupt their chatting together. The selection of ceramics were pretty good, no higher end items that I noticed though. They had several different themes or categories to make my selection from. The prices were very reasonable and the studio fee was as well. The stamps were some what plentiful, the paint was very diverse in selections to choose from, the brushes and bowls were also plentiful, but the stencils were in very limited supply. I am not very artistically gifted so I do rely heavily on the stencils. They were playing some music that I didn't enjoy. One song was about being on drugs and another one was a bit racy I think. I usually enjoy some classical or easy listening music at these potter places. I don't think that this one quasi-downer is going effect my decision to return to MP or not. read more

The Mad Potter is SO fun when you're itching for a crafternoon with your girls, kids, Grandma or significant other. It's indeed very therapeutic and a great way to catch up while doing something fun. The selection of paintable pieces is darn near overwhelming. If you haven't dreamed up or found a design on Pinterest before coming in, you might suffer from choice paralysis! From Christmas chachkes to light switch plates, you're bound to find something fun to paint. They have tables lined with paper and set with brushes and water bowls ready to go when you arrive. If it's your first time the staff will show you the ropes, but basically once you pick your table and your piece(s) all you need is your paint colors. They have paint, glazes, stamps, stencils, tiny glue-ons and hair dryers stationed throughout the studio for quick drying between applications. Unless you paint something tiny or have a super simple design, plan to spend about 2-3 hours there. But hey, LaRosa's is right next door if you get hungry! I came here with a friend and kiddos to make Father's Days gifts. There is a great selection of paintable pieces. Our toddlers were able to make adorable handprint mugs. You can definitely paint nice intricate pieces as well. The staff was very helpful, answered questions, and gave us tips on how to do it with young children. It usually takes a week for the, to glaze and fire the piece, but they had ours done quicker in time for Father's Day. It'd be fun to come back for a girl's night. read more

This place is going to be a problem for me... A few of my girlfriends and I decided to go to Mad Potter on a Saturday afternoon, and I can easily see this becoming an addictive little hobby! Most of us aren't all that artistically-inclined, so the staff were really helpful and encouraging in how to start up the process of painting our pottery and selecting pieces that would be easy to do. The shop has long tables that can be used by groups or shared with multiple individuals. My favorite part??? You can bring in alcohol. Because what's a better idea than painting with a glass of wine, right? There is a room available for party reservations, but we didn't get our plans coordinated in time to reserve it. The selection of paintable ceramics is almost overwhelming, but everyone will find something for either their skill level of the specific item they're wanting to create. I picked a small owl plate, another friend picked a large platter, and several others designed coffee mugs. There are trendy things (like whimsical owls, compost containers, and Disney characters) to very classic pieces (garden gnomes and animal figurines) to gorgeous decor pieces (tall pitchers and wreaths). Prices range from around $7.00 to over $35, depending on the size and detail of the item you want to paint. Studio fees are $8.00 (some Saturdays are half-price), which covers the cost of paints, supplies, and the firing of your item when it's completed. Because the glaze has to dry and then be fired, you can't pick your items up for 7 days after your painting session. And if they happen to break in the kiln, which happens occasionally, they will reimburse you for your original purchase (sadly, this happened to one of our mugs). We spent a few hours at the studio, snacking and drinking while we worked on our pieces. I was really impressed with the variety of paints and glazes that were available, especially for as cheap as the studio fees are. This is such a great activity for anyone, regardless of your skill set. When we were there, there were grandmas with elementary-aged grand kids there, parents with high school aged kids, a few couples on dates, and our rather boisterous group of 30-something wine drinkers. Our pottery came out better than we hoped, and we had a fabulous, inexpensive activity for a girls' afternoon out of the house. I'm already planning my Christmas gifts, so I have an excuse to go back to paint more! read more

I love this place. Painting pottery is therapeutic, fun, and a perfect activity for a whole family, girls/date night, or a place to play hookie from work. There are plenty of paint colors and pieces to paint ranging from dishes to picture frames to silly figurines. Even though Mad Potter is enjoyable, the staff is rarely pleasant to be around. Most of them are very young, probably in high school, and could care less about helping customers. When asking where supplies go in an effort to help clean up, the girl simply pointed in some random direction and refrained from making eye contact with me. I was also there until closing, 9pm, and instead of providing a friendly reminder that the store was closing, another girl simply stated 'you need to leave, we are closing.' Aside from these two employees, the older staff are helpful and friendly and available to answer any questions and offer advice which is especially helpful for newbies. Enjoy, but ask for the owner if you need help; the other employees aren't in it. read more

I went here with 3 friends and we were disappointed by the lack of customer service provided. It was our first time, yet no one bothered to ask, explain how the process worked, show us where to get supplies, or check on us to see how we were doing. The prices are reasonable and the space is nice...but the poor service will prevent me from returning. We must have got the bad crew, because I see others had a different experience. The 2 teenagers working just seemed like they didn't want to be bothered. Unfortunate, because I love painting and crafty outings. read more

As only a portion of the fees were going to be covered by work, I was nervous about handling the checks but they did everything for me and it was extremely easy. They broke a very sentimental piece of art we made with our kids that cam to visit all the way up from North Carolina. We understand that pottery can break but when asked about the refund policy, they just said we could go back in and paint another one. Our children were no longer in Ohio when they called us to give us the bad news. Good job at breaking pottery! read more

Two of my friends and I went last Saturday for some girl talk time and we went to the Mad Potter in Mason. It would've been a fantastic time but within 30 minutes a 7yr old was having her birthday party with 20 of her closest friends. Her mom was screaming at the top of her lungs the whole time to get the kids excited about one thing or another. The Mad Potter crew could've stepped in and asked her to lower her voice so that other patrons could enjoy their time painting and engage in conversation. But nothing was said. All three of us came away with headaches. The Mad Potter has a pretty good selection of pieces to paint and a great selection of paints. The gal that showed us where the paints were didn't give us the full rundown of options. Only after we were done with our painting did we find out we had the option of fine detail lettering through squeeze bottle paints. That would've been helpful info. Good place, the staff just needs a little more fine tuning. read more
