I use Madan this year to complete my US and Canada taxes and have had a generally positive experience with them. My initial call was with Allan who was very reassuring and helpful, making me feel confident in retaining him and his team as my accountants this year. What I got them to do for me: - US taxes (including filing for my Canadian PFICs) - Fixing my last year's Canadian taxes which I forgot to file something along with my return Pros: - Free consultation - I was able to schedule a 15 minute call with Allan and he was able to understand my unique tax situation and even offered me advice and suggestion during the consultation call. - Very responsive - I always get a reply within 1-2 business days with detailed and direct responses to my questions. - Accommodating - Allan, Rahul, and team would always answer any questions I have, even if it was just for myself to understand taxes more. They even hopped on additional calls with me (included in my filing payment) to make sure everything was right. - Price - Compared to other cross-border accountants, they were reasonable with their pricing and didn't seem like they were trying to rip me off - Flexible - Their cost included many nice small forms/cases that other accountants kept charging separately for. Even if it was factored into the overall cost, it felt better than seeing "we will charge you $200 to put in 2 numbers" from other accountants. - Helpful - While I used them for my US taxes, there was a specific form that the US required that I opted to file instead of using Madan. They even offered to look at it anyways and was very helpful to point out a small mistake I made on my end. I then fixed it and provided them that form for them to complete my US return. Cons: - There was 1 mistake that I discovered that I had to have them correct (EV Credit). This was only found after reviewing the draft myself and having to learn a lot of the US tax myself. If I didn't read up on the tax forms or learn it, it very much may have been filed incorrectly. FYI: - I was under the impression that it was Allan (from the initial call) that was going to be handling my taxes, but instead it was his team members that I was communicating with the entire time. Thankfully, my case was assigned to Rahul who handled it with great professionalism and was very responsive to my questions. Allan was still CC'ed into our conversations and I can tell he was overseeing the communications to make sure things were on track. - The original US filing (they had to make an amendment to fix it) not factoring for a Roth Backdoor resulting in ~2kUSD extra taxes paid. It would have been great if this information was pulled from me during discovery. For example, their intake form can explicitly ask for the question. Or if they realize an entire retirement account is drained, to dig a little bit more into it, eventually leading to the discovery of the Backdoor being used. At the end of the day, they fixed it for me and I am very grateful for them to do it for me without additional cost. Its on me for not explicitly disclosing it so I don't consider this as a con, but rather an FYI if you are in the same situation. Overall, I would recommend them if you have a unique situation that tax software can not cover. Their team is friendly and willing to go the extra mile to not only make sure your taxes are filed, but you learn something along the way. I will definitely love for Rahul to handle my taxes again next year. Just be sure to check over their work to make sure nothing is missed. read more

There are several negative reviews here, but I'd point out that if you get a good staff member working for you, Madan accounting is easy to work with. Have you ever had an accountant do your taxes improperly? Well, Allan and his team have taken the cake for shitty service. In the beginning when it was a one-man show, he spent more time with his customers.. nowadays, you have juniors or interns working on your taxes. You won't even get an introduction, one day, you have a random person emailing you about a specific financial question, the next day, it's somebody else. The WORST thing that happened to me was Allan and his incompetent team forgot to file my corporate taxes for TWO YEARS!!! I paid for his service in 2016 and 2017. They completed my return but forgot to e-file. An accountant who forgets to e-file is like a dentist who forgets to work on his patient's teeth. I was charged late penalties by the Canada Revenue Agency over $1,000 for two missed periods. I'm currently on the phone with them while I write this review and I'm informed I need to fill out Form RC4288 - tax payer relief. I am literally writing as an explanation, "my douchebag accountant is incompetent and only cares about his own money and business". I wish I had read these Yelp reviews of Madan prior to using their services, as they are spot on accurate. I used Madan services to file 2017 and 2018 corporate taxes. Both years came with errors costing me penalties from the CRA. Madan would not take responsibility for their inadequate work causing those penalties. The problem is you don't find out about the 2017 errors until CRA notifies you 2 years later in 2019. That penalty cost over $1000. Also, an additional penalty in the $300 range for the 2018 year caused by Madan. The entire reason of hiring Madan to do your taxes is completely lost with all the financial errors. After speaking with Allan, feelings were good about proceeding with the arrangement. After a retainer was paid, the account was the immediately transferred to a junior employee named Rittika. That is where everything went down hill. Poor communication through out the entire process, lack of response from Rittika, and when things were escalated to Allan things seemed to be resolved, but the back and forth was very frustrating. Rittika often miscommunicated details, only to change statements the day after actions were taken. I don't recommend their services. Very unprofessional. read more

I have been working with Allan for just over one year and the experience has been great, I have him doing my corporate and personal taxes. This is why he gets 5 stars from me, 1-extremely knowledgeable 2- very upfront and honest with me 3- Responsive (responds to emails and calls) 4- patient 5- prices are very reasonable (hope it stays that way!) I was a few years behind on my taxes and found Madan Chartered Accountants online. I met briefly with Allan Madan and my files were handled by Bhavin Patel. Bhavin did a fantastic job of getting everything caught up and was very thorough. Very knowledgeable and amazing service. Their price was reasonable too. I would not hesitate to recommend this firm. As you have not been professional enough on 1:1 interactions with me, I'll ask you this publicly. This will probably also help your other clients to know how you respond in difficult situations, when CRA questions your work, and your customer service standards. For my 2015 return worked upon and filed by you, CRA has disputed your calculations. I am ready to pay you for the CRA follow-up work provided you can defend your original work. Questions you have dodged so far and I am waiting responses for? - What is your accountability if your original filing calculations were incorrect and CRA is correct in their calculation? I have so far failed to see any admission of the error or you taking any sort of accountability. - Will you own your error and ensure you close the case with CRA without me having to pay you again for your error? - What is your customer service policy? You told me to go speak with your insurance and you have $2 million insurance. Is this your customer service standard? Just for everyone in public to know, I have tried multiple times but Allan has been extremely evasive and abrasive without taking any accountability for his original work. He has just been asking for more money without any commitment to justify his original work. After repeated requests to talk, he finally called, spoke his points and hung up on me as soon as I tried sharing my points. Earlier review: Gets juniors, probably interns, to work on your taxes. Be Careful with any accountant. Allan seems more convincing with open policies of communication. But don't get trapped. The best thing is to seek advise from multiple accountants instead of getting stuck with one accountant. Always contact Revenue Canada for advise before making a choice. Because it is Revenue Canada that is going to review your T2 corporate returns when audit happens. Allan is only a chartered accountant not a corporate lawyer, he cannot understand complex tax laws. I consulted him in past ( paid consultation ). His views are conflicting some other accountants or other responses in forums. His views on CCA for vehicle use to incorporated businesses is rising suspicions. The only thing I appreciate him is he is open to give tax advises on hourly basis to anyone which many Chartered Accountants do not want. So be careful..he never commits on paper for paid consultations, he never asks for reviewing any of your company details, you ask questions he answers within that time frame. He is very rigid if you ask for little clarification even if that is clarified as the final one for helping. Some one asked him about an error happened his return 10 years ago, he says he will involve few accountants from his office at the hourly rate. Can Revenue Canada allow you to make changes to your T2 returns for more than 3 years?, no then why he is saying that. It is only money sucking business. Be careful... read more

As a new customer at the beginning you get a lot of attention. Behind the scene all the work is handled and processed by trainees and interns on minimum wages who have little and no knowledge and during peak season they hardly have the time to review their findings. If you are ignorant on tax matters and I bet you have signed the waiver the firm seeks, then you are on the hook and the firm has limited liability after a year. There is no doubt that Allan is knowledgeable- but all your work is done by trainees and interns and not Allan himself under little or no supervision. You seek the help of a professional since you trust them and expect value which when diluted by interns you are exposing yourself to trouble inadvertently. So beware and take the plunge only if you get a one on one attention to go over your company or personal tax details with a qualified CA and not with an intern. read more
