I found this amazing Asian market on my last full day in Dublin. Oh how I wish I'd discovered it on…read moreday one. I was told there are plenty around, but this is the one I went to closest to the Temple Bar area. They had any and everything you'd imagine from snacks and seasonings to meals and plenty of cookware. I like to try a variety of international snacks whenever I travel out of the country, this time was no different. It's become a satiable and exciting experience for me over the years. Well, that and I had 14 minutes to kill before the next Luas... Instead of wasting your money on a cheap takeaway, find the recipe of your favourite dish online (i.e. black bean rice) and go to the Emporium to get the ingredients. You can later spend the money that you saved on beer. Even if you're completely useless in the kitchen, you can still shop here. They have a new deli counter where I spotted a tasty roasted duck and on the other side of the shop, there's a fridge full of fizzy Korean drinks. Part of the fun is guessing what items are. It was bustling with folks, which is always a great sign. I got some dates, bananas & blood grapefruits (did I just make a new variety of grapefruit up?) It all come to less then €5... The man in front of me got some spuds and it came to 50c, he was shocked at the cheapness. There is a lovely touch at the front door, a local has print-outs of recipes and the seasonal veg/fruit that go with it. Nicky the owner allows her to display them, it really in keeps with the local feel of the spot.

I really like the place, the prices are very fair and you will get value for your money. I use a lot of fruit and veggies for all my cooking and it is very difficult to get quality. Well! here you will. I was absolutely astonish by the price of the avocados at 0.99 cent each, this is the best price for the quality you will get, I can guarantee that the same avocado costs up to €1.60 to €1.70 which is an awful lot of a difference, and like this example I could give you many more. Nicky (the owner) appeared to talk to me and explain a bit about the shop and the offers he has and he kindly let me take a photo of the shop. This kind of shops you won't find them anymore and they are such a treat for the area and the locals. There you will select fresh fruit and vegetables with the help of nice people behind the counter who will give you a smile and good service, not like a big super market where you will be wondering about and finding out where to weight your items. We (we all do) are responsible for letting go small places like this instead of supporting the small companies which have a lot more to offer than the big monsters who won't even care what they are selling to you or what kind of food you cook and eat. Fresh on Camden St took over the Spar that used to be on the same site. I was wary of this particular changeover, as this particular Spar was renowned for it's chicken fillet rolls, but lo and behold, Fresh give good roll. And their deli is eye-poppingly varied. They have the normal sandwich fillings, as well as the standard hot food stuff (jambons, lasagne, etc). But then they also sell stir frys and pasta, and all sorts fancy parma ham and proscuttio and some plain weird shit like scotch eggs. They also have a nice little coffee counter where you can sit down and drink your tea or coffee from delph rather than the standard paper cup. There groceries are a teeny bit on the pricey side, but then they are a convernience store rather than a supermarket, do what are you gonna do?

The Dublin food coop is a market hall which sells lots of organic food - local and imported. They…read moreare open on Thursdays (afternoons until late) and Saturdays during the day. Thursdays they have a limited selection with their organic/fairtrade/eco products and one supplier of fruits/vegetables, Saturday is the full show. First, this is a real coop with the whole community concept and you are encouraged to join as a member if you come regularly. Until recently they had a guest fee/suggested donation for visiting on Saturdays but this is gone so you are now free to check it out and see if you like it. Memberships gives you a 5% discount which might only be worth it if you shop there a lot, but even if not it might give you a warm and fuzzy feeling inside. While the coop is somewhat like a farmers market, it's kind of different because it has lots of different areas. It's definitely not as posh as the Temple Bar Farmers Market, so if you're looking for something like that - you're wrong here - this is much more down to earth (although Natasha's living foods also has a stand there) First there is the coop-run fairtrade/eco/organic store, which is a bit like a big health food store. Some of the "staple" products (like different beans, sugar, etc.) are packed by the coop itself and seem very competitively priced, others you can find cheaper in other places around town. The selection is great though, there's some things I haven't found somewhere else around town (like these German soy-based meat substitutes).They also do refills for some of the eco washing up/laundry liquids. Then there is the organic fruit/vegetable/eggs sellers - I think there's four or five competing ones there. They mostly have similar produce though and more than I'd like is imported - I couldn't find any Irish apples there, while they seem to have them at the Temple Bar Market. Also although there are all these producers together you might not get as lovely mushrooms or might be missing some not-so-common fruits/vegetables. They do their best, and all the guys are very lovely, but if like me you're looking for something very specific you might still have to hit both F&B and the Temple Bar Market to try to find it. If you hit these two first, you might be lucky here though. Then there's a few other sellers, two guys sell bread, one is German and sells nice German breads, the other I haven't tried. And then there's the milk/cheese stand from Moonshine, one of the main reasons I'm coming here. They have the non-homogenised (but pasteurised) Moonshine Milk, which is my new favourite as it tastes much better than the usual one to me. And it's not expensive for organic milk, 2.35 for 2 litres of the tastiest milk you'll get. Their cheese is also delicious. If you're hungry right there, there's also a cafe and a few sellers of snacks - two Indian foodstands, and a few other sellers of organic soups/pasties/muffins/other snacks. What I tried there was tasty, but nothing to write home about - I wouldn't say it's worth going there just for that. One thing you won't find in this huge markethall is meat - it's fully vegetarian. I must say I didn't really notice though until I read it on their website that this is part of the concept. I'd personally like a closer place to pick up a good selection of organic meat too, but it's only a small downside for me.

No really, that's what they're called, and they seriously are amazing, soft silky eggs with a little fried garlic and some cheese chucked in, on top of a slice of toasted brioche (from the German baker who sells his bread there) topped with fresh tomato and basil. Heavenly. All the ingredients they use in the cafe are from the market and you really can taste the difference. Just remember to tidy up after yourself, it's a co-op after all. ;)

We were running out of time on our hunt to find them when I realized, 'I've got my trusty guidebook!!' And that's how we ended up here. It was 12 Euros for 6 oysters and a glass of wine. Since there were four of us, the lady was nice enough to give us 4 cups of wine (yes, plastic cups - it's a farmer's market, what do you expect!) They even threw in an extra oyster! SO FRESH! SO BIG! (cue that's-what-she-said joke). Compared to NYC oysters, these babies looked like they were on steroids! They also have this dipping sauce (had onions and was really vinegar-y, but good. But if you don't like the sour, you should just take the oyster straight.) Didn't eat anything else from other stands because we just had lunch. However, I believe they had shish kebabs, crepes, and bread. Oh and FYI - Sheridans Cheesemongers was there (saw this place on Anthony Bourdain when he went to Dublin so thought this might be worth mentioning). Definitely check out this farmer's market!

So what can you find in this purty little spot? It's all about local folks! They stock Irish (and European) cheese and meats, handmade breads, fresh fruit and veges, freshly made sandwiches and pastries, olives, various other pickled schtuff and all the rest of those types of delish bits n bobs you won't find in your local supermarkets. The Lilliput Press is across the way as well if you want a little read. I just wish they had more seating in here, but I guess that may take away some of the tiny shop charm of the place. It has a range of regular and artisan products. Cheeses from around the country, artisan breads, olives from Morocco, lots of wines and delicious sandwiches to go. A coffee will set you back the princely sum of €1.50. There are seats built into the shop front so you can relax and enjoy the atmosphere. The girl I was chatting with was a pure doll, she recommended a few local events to me, I really appreciate when people know the community they work in and are welcoming like they are here.

There are several drinks included in the tasting menu along with certain foods, making it extremely good value. This really is a place that everyone should try at least once. Stepping in here feels like an oasis of calm, and you instantly start to feel like worth a million dollars. They treat everyone like a queen! I was delighted to find out they are now also doing afternoon tea. They have deals online all the time for it, and it only costs 35 euro for two people including a glass of prosecco. The afternoon tea was nothing but delicious. Starting from the bottom: 5 different types of sandwiches (the usual fare of salmon/ creamcheese, eggmayo, ham/mustard etc). Layer two had 3 scones on them (two plain, one with raisins) and butter/ cream/jam. My favourite was the top layer, 5 delicious small desserts, one even better than the next. It was a bit awkward to divide the desserts between two people though (and it got messy! Not such classy ladies after all) The waiter checked a few times on us, if we wanted to order any more sandwiches or desserts (nope, we were stuffed !) A lovely experience and will recommend it to anyone.
