We initially chose Weir Custom Contracting after a random search for a local contractor, and at…read morefirst, we were extremely impressed.
Josh was professional, responsive, reasonably priced, and easy to work with. He took the time to listen to our ideas, explain the process, answer questions, and deliver a beautiful deck that we were very happy with. Throughout the larger phases of the project, communication was excellent, the worksite was kept clean, and the workmanship appeared to be of a high standard. We were so pleased that we began discussing additional projects with him.
Unfortunately, our experience changed significantly after we informed Josh that, due to a change in our plans and advice from our real estate agent about over-investing in the home, we would not be moving forward with a couple of those additional projects.
Almost immediately, it felt as though we were no longer a priority. Communication became increasingly difficult, and we repeatedly heard "we'll get to it next week" while outstanding items continued to be pushed off.
We were left with unfinished siding work that had already been paid for, an unfinished front porch step, and a side-door overhang that was never painted to match the fascia as agreed. Josh later sent a text message stating that everything he was responsible for had been completed before he left. This was simply not accurate.
We also discovered that a gap in our front porch, which we had specifically asked to have repaired, had not actually been fixed. Instead, a loose piece of wood had been placed in the gap. We only discovered this weeks later. When we contacted Josh about it, we received no response.
Additionally, as can be seen in the photos, rather than creating a clean, uniform finish along the side of the stairs, scrap pieces of wood were used to fill gaps. The result looks unfinished and unprofessional, and is inconsistent with the quality of workmanship Josh presented himself as delivering when we first hired him.
Finding these issues has caused us to question whether other work may have been completed with the same lack of care. That is particularly disappointing because our initial impression was that Josh took pride in his workmanship and never cut corners.
After weeks of delays, excuses, and unaddressed concerns, we ultimately decided to cut ties. As busy professionals, we simply do not have the time to continually follow up on unfinished, paid-for work.
What makes this experience frustrating is that we know Josh is capable of good work. Our deck turned out beautifully, and that is why this outcome was so disappointing. However, our experience was that once it became clear there would be no additional projects, the communication, follow-through, and attention to detail declined significantly.
Based on our overall experience, we can no longer recommend Weir Custom Contracting.
