Mark offered to let us try out some classes at his school in Willoughby and, from the very first time I went, I felt completely welcome and at home. The other students were happy to practice with me and to provide little bits of advice here and there so that I could learn without it seeming overwhelming. Saturday morning the school runs a women's self defense course, which is free and immensely practical. The beauty of jiu jitsu is that you don't have to be strong - you just have to be smart. This martial art (used by the Samurai and subsequently developed in Brazil by the Gracie brothers - very interesting history) uses leverage and physics so that 100lbs girl in our class was able to beat a 200lbs guy. What I really appreciate about Mark and Ron's school is how welcoming they are. They really care about making a difference in Cleveland through jiu jitsu. They have the free women's self defense course, a fantastic kids program, and they are building a brand new facility so that their regular students will have more space to practice, locker rooms, an area where their kids can play while they take classes, and so much more. If you are interested in trying a martial art, I definitely recommend trying jiu jitsu and, moreover, trying Mark and Ron's school because you can come here knowing that you will be able to learn and practice in a welcoming environment in which everyone is focused on learning *safely* rather than trying to prove that they know more than you. Very glad that I had the opportunity to train here for a few months before I go back to Buffalo and, because of this school, I will definitely be looking for a place to train in Buffalo.

I knew nothing about the facility or what to expect; a friend had posted the clinic information on Facebook and I thought it would be something worth while to try out. Boy am I glad I did! The owner Jason reached out and answered all of my questions in regards to signing up for the class in an extremely timely manner, and offered to provide additional assistance in case I had any problems. I didn't have any problems, it was a smooth process signing up and paying for the class and I received a quick confirmation and a reminder the day before. They are extremely organized and informative when it comes to "newbies". Upon entering the gym I was immediately greeted and was directed on what to do to sign in and prep for the clinic I signed up for. To be acknowledged that fast in a room full of ladies coming in for the class is quite impressive. I immediately felt welcome (considering my own feeling of intimidation because I was in a MMA gym). Jason was there checking people in and providing proper paperwork to fill out for the clinic and the other staff members were present to provide assistance if needed. Everyone was super welcoming and kind and I quickly became comfortable in the setting I was in. As mentioned earlier, I signed up for the Womens Awareness & Self Defense Clinic. End result? I was not disappointed! I cant even begin to describe how well the clinic was presented. A former Seattle Police Department patrolman/detective, and current owner of Hope Athletic Training Institute, partook to discuss the concept of situational awareness. He provided a ton on information and shared real-life examples. His portion of the clinic really opened my eyes to knowing the importance of always being aware and decisive if ever needed. The second part of the clinic was live hand to hand self defense instruction taught by the owner of Krav Maga Cleveland. Of course he also stressed the importance of situational awareness first and if ever needed, he taught through example, ways in which to respond if a physical attack occurs. Jason (owner of GriffonRawl) also participated in the clinic and chimed in key points as they were being discussed. He evaluated the hand to hand defense as it was being practiced and focused on proper technique and stressing quality over quantity. He shared "key points" that would be handy to know if ever in a physical situation and stressed the importance of making yourself aware by watching some self defense videos on youtube etc. Extremely helpful and knowledgeable and went above and beyond what I ever expected. In conclusion, if I had to rate GriffonRawl on a 0-5 star scale, I'd say 10! I truly enjoyed myself that night and was wowed by the level of professionalism from the owner and staff and cleanliness and set up of the gym. Jason, you have great things going on a GriffonRawl. Bravo! Looking forward to the next one!!!

I have been coming here for quite some time and have never been disappointed. There is a multitude of classes you can sign up for and try and see what you like. I HIGHLY recommend THIS PLACE. You will feel better physically, mentally, and emotionally guaranteed. The owner Jason and his wife welcome anyone and everyone with open arms. The coaches as well are top tier and the best of the best in whatever field they are coaching. As well as all the people training here will not make fun of you, not judge, but they WILL HELP YOU no matter your skill set. Everyone here is like a family and everyone loves everyone. There is also special event Jason and the team do and I also HIGHLY RECOMMEND going to these for not just the team building aspect but the family building aspect. You will make life long friends here guaranteed.!!!!! Put on your shoes and make the drive over today and give it a try for yourself and tell them Jeffrey sent you.!!!!!

My child is relating to general daily instruction in a whole new way at home, his confidence with other children on the playground has improved at school, and he has an increased body awareness and confidence. We just experienced our first belt testing ceremony, and it was so sweetly presented that it made Grandpa cry with happy pride in the audience. Their passion is infectious, the facility is clean and well kept, and the students are having fun while learning. We absolutely love Chardon ATA and look forward to seeing our daughter (and eventually our son,) continue to grow through this program.
