Walking through the mostly abandoned Richmond Mall on the way to the driver's license office feels…read morelike stepping into a time capsule that never quite got sealed. The air is faintly cool and carries that unmistakable, slightly dusty mall scent--a blend of tile cleaner, food court grease, and decades of hair spray and nail polish remover (worth noting, two of the remaining stores are a nail salon and what I believe was a former Regis Salon... the staple mall salon of the 90's where Gen X and Millennials were traumatized with the experience of horrible high school dance hair do's that remained plastered to your head for days due to all the hair spray). The wide tiled corridors stretch out, eerily quiet and nostalgically peach colored, but your mind almost fills them with echoes: teenagers in acid-wash jeans, jangly bracelets, and oversized sweaters clustering at Aladdin's Castle; you almost crave the thrum of a fountain and the squeak of white sneakers on polished tile remains. (Today I coincidentally wore white Bobs sneakers, an unintended homage to 25 years ago when I would have been in Keds!) The faded pastel walls and neon trim still reflect the 1980s--mint greens, peachy pinks, and geometric accents that wouldn't feel out of place in the opening credits of Saved by the Bell. You half expect Zack Morris to lean against a payphone or Kelly Kapowski to walk past clutching a brightly colored oversized shopping bag. Every shuttered storefront seems to hold a memory of when the mall was the center of social life--Friday night hangouts, first dates, prom dress shopping, families crowding in line for Orange Julius. Ironically, the current stores and businesses are primarily bridal or formal wear or what appears to be a fairly popular community church. I do have to comment on the crazy collision and juxtaposition of two quintessentially American social constructs - the hip non-denominational church and the former temple of commercial consumerism. A quick search describes the church as a friendly and service-based community and I will admit that I find a strange sense of positive harmony in their use of this space. Despite the eerily abandoned and run down exterior, the interior of the mall was immaculately clean and while the Drivers Bureau could have had better signage and directions (you have to squander some faith when entering the mall at the direction of your GPS), I applaud our government for their use of this space. A short walk into the heart of the former mall finds a well-staffed office and a digital check in system that was highly efficient and ran promptly on time. The whole experience was more than a little surreal: a bureaucratic errand tucked inside the skeleton of America's mall culture, where the décor and the emptiness are both creepy and nostalgic. My main complaint for this visit was the depressing gray cubicles and unfortunately excessive fluorescent lighting inside the offices. While good drivers license photos are seldom a reality, this venue yielded my least flattering photo of all time - my picture (which the clerk was kind enough to call 'flattering'), was a depressing, washed out mug shot that created bags under my eyes and hinted at a scandalous profession and past that I shudder to imagine. (I am now considering investing in a quick trip to a spa for laser treatments and Botox to remove any hint that I actually appear to others as I do in this photo!) My photo withstanding, I have to commend the staff as they were all friendly, helpful, and kind. The gentleman that helped me truly was a nice man and I could tell he was respected by his colleagues. For anyone needing a quick appointment in the great Commonwealth of Kentucky - Richmond is your venue. It was the only location in Kentucky with an appointment in reasonable time frame and the drive in from Lexington saved a four month wait. The whole trip turned into an incredible adventure and it took me longer to write this review than it did to renew my license.

I would like to wrap up my experience as serving on my grand jury experience here. Just today, I…read moreactually had overslept and I had to quickly put in my appeal, after calling back to the court. The admin, Cindy, had told me to email back and the judge was to decide my options. Thankfully, he released me from ever having to serve this year and I am so appreciative of that ( I was actually waiting to call back and see how the response would come- in a form of a summons O_o, a bench warrant :O?). Nope, just an email (see these are the things they do not tell you- you kind of fear it.) Honestly, I have to say that this was such a great experience and I have to thank all those prosecutors, who I interacted with and willingly to allow me into their cases. I feel that I am just a mere citizen of this city, I do not have any degrees in law and yet I had such a big responsibility for the last three days, or so I felt (April 2nd, 3rd and 9th) ! I would also like to thank the judge (forget his last name), the admin, and all who were involved in this experience. Who would have thought a release? I would have been fine with a "do not do it again." I have to say he was a pretty cool judge, he never really cared when we never stood up on the "all rise" as he entered (then again, there was no bailiff neither, so no one actually said it). I still did, it's so old school, like the Twilight Zone, that it would be a crime not to O_o (actually, I read somewhere that one COULD BE in Contempt of Court, if not doing so- not sure how that applies today) Thanks again Fayette County Circuit!

What can you say about a court building? It's a well kept place and appears to be pretty safe as…read morewell. They have some neat fountains outside that sometimes the kids play in during warmer weather. There are also some undesirables hanging out around outside that can make a person feel uneasy but parking can usually be found in the garage across from or on the side street with a short walk. Just don't stop to chat with these folks. Check the hours for the entity you are going to see before you go or call ahead to make sure they will be open.

We have planned and attended a number of events at the courthouse including the Latino Festival, the pride festival, and the women's march. Parking is not free on the weekends any more. (Bummer) And the water fountains are not treated so "swim" at your own risk. I hope that if you ever have to visit here that it is only for good things. Festivals and celebrations. (Maybe jury duty...it is your civic duty!) Stay away from anything that will require you to be arraigned in this courthouse.

Why review our courthouse? Because if you're researching the place, I think that you should know…read morethat there's no specific parking. There is street parking (be sure to bring coins) and there is at least one nearby pay to park lot. But that's the only limited parking that I know about. It's actually two buildings, one is district and the other is circuit court. Over ten years ago, they both replaced the old courthouse building that now serves as a museum. The courtyard, I guess you'd call it, is the home to many festivals and even the starting point to Susan G Komen walk each year. The fountain that's in the courtyard isn't always turned on, but when it is, especially at sundown, it's gorgeous. Sometimes you'll see kids playing in it, which I think is disgusting, but to each his own.

Save yourself the trouble and avoid this place at all costs. They don't care about any of the cases brought before them and will do nothing. Traci denies restraining orders to women who need them. It was all over the news a few years ago. A woman died because of it. Shame on Traci Brislin, what a disgrace to the bench. How does she even feel after that? I bet it makes no difference to her. Good luck dealing with Denotra. She will talk over you and not listen to anything you say. She barely knows or understands the law as it is; just another Ketanji Brown Jackson. I once saw an attorney roll his eyes at her, when his back was turned away, after she finished giving some outlandish reason why she could not accept a sworn affidavit. God help us all.

It was also the 106th of Kentucky's 120 counties to be formed. The building faces south and is a two story red colored brick and concrete structure. The south front has a central entrance on the first story with a projecting balcony on the second story with clock above at the roof line. On the east and west sides, the building projects at the center. The windows are vertical. The roof line is flat. It looks a bit Art Deco to me with the clock on the front and the "1950" lettering. It's cute and appropriately sized for such a small county. On a Sunday morning, it was completely locked and secured but still worth checking out. The historic Oldham County Courthouse has stood as the centerpiece of LaGrange for nearly 200…read moreyears. As the 2nd oldest courthouse in Kentucky, it has served the community in many ways! The people of Oldham County fought hard to preserve this historic piece of history. Recently, the State of Kentucky approved $29 Million dollars to be used to renovate. Work has started on this project and projected to be completed in 2024. From WEHR Construction:The Oldham County Courthouse is a very complex and unique project. This project will consist of preserving, remodeling, and adding to the 6,355 square foot original courthouse. The 900-ton historic structure was originally constructed in 1828, making it the second oldest courthouse in the state of Kentucky. With experience, knowledge, and coordination, Edwards Moving & Rigging will be relocating the historic building to accommodate the 47,620 square foot addition. Considering the time and patience needed to successfully execute a project of this nature, the new Oldham County Judicial Center will be completed in August of 2024.
