This place is delicious! The guy who cooks the empanadas takes your order as well and I believe he is the owner. He's very nice and suggested what we should order. I'm Cuban and we use chimichurri sauce just on meat, more specifically churrasco, so I was skeptical about eating it on an empanada. I was pleasantly surprised at how well they paired together. After seeing my fellow Yelper's gush about this place, I was dying to try it out. A rainy day (and being in the neighborhood) I finally decided to take the plunge and swung by to pick up a package of frozen empanadas to take home and bake. First things first, the owner was wonderful and very helpful considering how indecisive I was. He made some great recommendations, and even offered a few tips for how to cook the empanadas at home to perfection (brush egg over them before baking for the perfect golden brown color, guys). I tried the BBQ Pork, Chicken, and Beef empanadas and thought they were all wonderful. I think my favorite was the BBQ Pork, but I'll definitely be making a return trip to check out the rest of the menu and grab some of their sauces. I think keeping a bag or two (or three...) in the fridge for busy week nights is going to be a new habit for me. Worth the stop! read more

I saw the very many positive reviews on Yelp! and added it onto some errands I had to run down in Coralville. I bought a frozen dozen, four each of pork, beef and zucchini, and headed for home. As noted by the owner, the to-go menu had the identifying marks of each empanada to determine which was which. Preheated the oven to 465, put 5 of them in, and after 20 minutes they were ready to be consumed. They were all very nice, definitely liked the pork the best. Even though they were frozen, you could tell that they had not been prepared very long ago, I would even guess they were made fresh in the last day or two. I would say that 2 or 3 is a good serving size as long as you have a nice side. I went to NewPI and picked up a couple of salads. They worked well alongside the empanadas. They do have a small table where you can sit and chow down, but the design is really intended to be a grab-n-go meal. I swing by Maestro Empanadas every so often to restock the empanada supply I keep in our home freezer... because since Maestro Empanadas popped up shop, "empanada supply" is now a real thing in our household! My favorite is the Quinoa Empanada and my husband loves the Breakfast Empanada so I always have a couple bags of those flavors and I mix in a couple others from the menu on occasion. North Argentinian Empanadas in Coralville...Yes Please! In this little shop next to a vacuum store, some magic is going on. On the night of the first big snow storm of 2015, I was driving by and noted that this place was open despite the half inch of ice covered in 6 inches of snow. Naturally, it was time to visit! A humble shop on the inside, run by a dude from Northern Argentina. The empanadas he's serving up are BOSS! He's got 8 or so options with flavors for any palate. From a "breakfast" one with eggs and sausage, to a zucchini or Quinoa. More standards, like chicken, beef, cheese and bbq pork are available as well and were delightful! Everything runs about $2 per empanada or slightly discounted for higher numbers. A dozen or so was $22. We got 6 and it ran about $11 - a steal for these delicious meat pockets of Zeus! We also partook is some delicious Argentinian desserts! Shortbread cookies, sandwiching dulce de leche and rolled in coconut - seer brilliance. Truth be told I love Maestro Empanada and was happy to see their 3rd place award from this year's Top Chef Iowa City displayed in their shop. Frankly, they're #1 in my book. It's hard to pass by ME without stopping in when in Coralville. Then there's their foodtruck at the Farmer's Market. I've had all their empanadas and everyone of the flavors are standout. if I had to choose, breakfast, chicken, humita are my go-tos. I think the pupusa is a highly overrated vehicle for seasoned meat, cheese, or, occasionally, vegetables. With my entire heart, I believe that the empanada is a superior meat pocket. That is why I was so excited to read about Maestro Empanadas. I went at the soonest opportunity, and my expectations were exceeded! My mom and I got two empanadas each. We both planned on getting combos with a side salad, but were disappointed to learn that they were out of lettuce for the day. Our empanadas took about 5 minutes to bake. We drove to a picnic area at a nearby park and proceeded to engage in an Argentinean feast. I got a beef empanada and a goat empanada. Both were really, really good. The goat was a standout. My mom got a beef empanada and a cheese empanada and she loved hers as well.The empanadas aren't very big; one was about half the size of my palm. I wish my mom and I had ordered one more each upon learning that they were out of salad for the day, as two empanadas didn't quite fill us up and we were hungry again soon after eating. We also ordered 50 cent cups of chimichurri and Maestro sauce, and I absolutely loved the chimichurri. Maestro Empanadas is a great place to stop if you're looking for something outside the box. It isn't every day you have the opportunity to eat an empanada and it definitely isn't every day that you get to visit a shop that does them so well. read more

I love empanadas, so after dropping off a friend at the Megabus station in Coralville this week, I decided to swing by Maestro's and get some frozen emps to bake and enjoy at home. These flaky pockets of heaven did not disappoint!! I tried the cheese and zucchini varieties and they were delicious. I baked them on a small cookie sheet in my toaster oven at 465 for about 15 minutes and they turned out perfectly. 3 of these delightful emps + a light side dish = perfect meal! Full disclosure... I have to pick up my aforementioned friend from the Megabus next week... and I'm definitely going to this place again to get some more emps! I can't wait to try their other flavors. i would say this place is like "a hole in a wall" place. the place is tiny and can only sit 2 people. but I do think that the design is cute and thoughtful. the menu was clearly written on the wall. I got one of the combo where you get 2 empanadas with a salad or soup and a dessert. each flavor of the empanada was folded differently. they tasted good but I do hope that they are a little bit bigger in size. I got the beef and the chicken empanada. the filling was juicy and flavorful. First visit to this newer establishment. My husband and I visited during lunch. Not busy at all. The lady at the counter was very helpful. We tried one of each of the empanadas that were available at the time: beef, chicken, bbq pork , cheese, and humita. They were all tasty, but our favorites were the bbq pork and the cheese empanada. Empanadas are small so you will mostly likely need 3 or 4 to fill up. We shared the Maestro 2 combo($11) which included 6 empanadas and one sauce and we were both pretty satisfied, but not stuffed. We got both the chimichurri sauce and the habanero salsa(for and extra .50 cents). Neither were very spicy, but added a nice flavor to the empanadas. I will definitely be visiting again for a nice quick lunch. So happy to see a wonderful small restaurant like this open up in Coralville. It doesn't look like a lot from the outside - it's very small and just has a counter for service, no tables, but it's extremely clean and staff were very helpful and patient. We had the chicken and the beef empanadas. The beef were quite good, and the chicken were to die for - very flaky and cooked perfectly, and the filling was so flavorful. Drove by last week when I was hungry and decided to leave with a dozen empanadas to cook later. I got 4 different flavors, BBQ pork, beef, chicken, and breakfast ones. We got 3 of each. Food is great! The staff are friendly but they are very busy. Sometimes you have to wait for the empanadas to be baked as they run out quickly. It takes about 15 minutes but it's worth the wait. You can call ahead for pickup or take them home and cook them yourself. Either way, great food! read more
