maffeo sutton park playground in nanaimo is hands down the coolest playground i've ever been to. honestly, where was this when i was a kid?
the park was empty at around 1:30 pm on a cold, lightly rainy day on a friday. i found myself swinging, spinning, gliding, and see sawing like my to do list didn't exist.
the recycled soft cushion underfoot makes everything comfy and forgiving, and the scenery is next level, tall trees all around, with the ocean and mountains casually showing off in the background.
even the pathways are part of the fun. the smooth, wide paved paths wind right through the playground, making it easy for wheels, strollers, and curious wanderers to explore. along the way there's a line of bright, curved musical chimes you can tap as you pass, plus drum style instruments set at just the right height so everyone can make a little joyful noise. benches nearby make it easy to pause and enjoy the impromptu concert.
the merry go round (aka spinning thing of happiness) is flush with the ground, has seats, and is easy to step on and off, no awkward climbing required or calculation to jump off. the zip line area has mulch underneath for a soft landing, and if there's no lineup, you can sit comfortably and glide back and forth pretending it's your personal ride.
you can really see and feel how much thought, planning, and care went into this place. it's wheelchair friendly, an inclusive playground with beautiful nods to indigenous art, welcoming, and ridiculously fun all at once.
highly recommend for kids of all ages, including adults who still know how to play. read more
