This flagship location of Magasin du Nord is 5 floors of glorious shopping. It's pretty much a one-stop shop for any of your needs. There's even a gourmet market in the basement below it with a bakery, pizza, fresh fruits & vegetables, and many specialty chocolates and candies. This part of the store connects to the underground Kongens Nytorv metro station. That's quite convenient for commuters on their way home from work. It's also great for tourists like us who want to buy last minute things like Lakrids of Bülow. There's a shop for that here as well. It's also where you'll find a coffee shop. We would eventually find out that there are many different cafés located on various floors of this department store. We found an express version of Hallernes Smørrebrød. I've written a separate review for this location, but for some reason it just doesn't show up in my Yelp activity. I just wish I had known about the other restaurant location on the top floor that boasts beautiful views of the square. We visited twice and somehow missed it. If anything, it would be nice to see a full directory of each floor listed on their website or near the entrance of the ground floor. The building is on the site of what was once the Hotel du Nord. Hans Christian Andersen was a resident of the hotel from 1838 to 1847. It's not the same building, but they supposedly recreated his room. It can be accessed on the 3rd floor. It's a second part of the store that I regret not seeing. Hence, the 4 star review for not having a clear map to everything without having to go floor by floor. It was a great find when walking through Kongens Nytorv Square. It's difficult to miss the beautiful French architecture of this building. My mother and her mother and millions of Danish mothers have shopped here for eons. But I was just some dude who knew he couldn't go to Søllerød Kro in Skechers! Tourist unforced error. In Jersey, you tell a shoe sales person. You can't spend more than $280, they upsell you to $350. But in Denmark, my Angel-faced empathy salesperson found shoes on sale for $100 and they were worth more. I would have kissed her on the nose I was so happy but I bet there are laws against that ! This is a decent mall located above the Kongens Nytorv metro station. It feels super fancy, at least to this dumb American who isn't used to department stores in older, gorgeous buildings. And there are goods available for all budget levels! You want a fancy designer sundress for $500+? They have that. You want to grab a cheap bathing suit on your way to the airport for vacation? They have that. Clothing, accessories, home goods. Oh my. The sales associates are friendly and helpful. AND there is a tourist discount with a non-Danish ID. I think this has to do with the VAT in the country, but no matter what or why, it is kind of a cool thing and something that was offered immediately when they heard us speaking English and not something we had to ask after or know about ahead of time. read more

Huge department store that reminded me of Galleries Lafayette in Paris. The place goes on and on and on. I loved that I didn't see too many American brands in the ladies section and liked that their prices included Euros and pounds, which we are more familiar with. Looked like a good spread on prices, and the building itself is at least worth a visit- so beautiful and opulent in the outside, and right across from equally beautiful Royal Danish Theatre. read more

A nice large department store in the classic style, marred only by unreasonably high prices. It's an unavoidable location, because of the subway and bus lines that go right past it. There is a flea market in the plaza across the street on weekends, go check that out and save your money :-) read more

"The Department Store" in Copenhagen, Magasin is part of the must do errand list of the city. Why? You can't help but come here, it's connected to the subway system, the Kongens Nytorv stop. It's tempting to get here because as you get out of the subway car and before braving the weather outside, you can run in to the bottom floor of Magasin and get a quick coffee, a hot chocolate, a nice pastry/bread from Meyer's Baggeri, or a steak for lunch, or even healthy vegan/veggie options. The food boutiques at Magasin please a range of dining appetites. Then you ascend to the other floors and similarly laid out as many department stores, the look is familiar except the products here are a better quality than what you are used to en Amerique. There is another high end department store closeby and it's worth visiting. That department store is for yet again another level of shopping. Back to food, you come here because "Everything is here". Gravlax to bread to Danish chocolate and licorice, no need to go anywhere else if you're in a rush to get good things to eat to serve family and friends at home or bring better quality munchies to your hotel at much cheaper price. Mad & Vin, a comprehensive food store is here with products from caviar to exotic saffron to Danish box dinners. Visits: a few Tip: Let me stress there's good Danish chocs here and other licorice sweets, yummy! And the best bread I've ever had at Meyer's Baggeri is at the deli. Go partake like a local and be happy you've read this. Ended up here on sale day one weekend and the prices were really good. Forget the men's shoes here, lots of shoes made in China. Servicewise you do have to ask for and flag someone, it is not customary to get 'doted' on in CPH; if you need help you ask for it. read more

Magasin, meaning "market" is really a big market. On different floors, they offer different things, such as clothing on the top floors and a food market on the bottom floor. We went for the food, but ended up perusing through other things and floors too. It's a bit pricey but it is Copenhagen and we left there spending a lot of money on organic teas, delicious chocolates, organic coffee, scarves and things for us to just carry back with us on the plane. You can spend hours here so make sure you have a plan before coming here, we wanted to get a bottle of wine and some snacks for a picnic but ended up getting everything and anything we saw that we liked. read more

So it's a mall. Yes there is a lot of of low brow shopping to be done but the Magasin also has a lot of high quality eats too. Chocolate and grocery vendors. Juice bar. Recently, a Meyers Bakery and Deli opened up here, upgrading the reason to go significantly. Claus Meyer is the man behind the New Nordic Cuisine, Noma, Restaurant Radio and owns farms producing fabulous Danish ingredients. So if anything go here for that! read more

To be honest, I always try to steer clear of Magasin. Crowded, full of stuff that you don't need but might want. Your wallet might go empty just by standing there and looking at stuff. That said, my strategy of steering clear of this place doesn't always work out so well. Again, and again I'm tempted to go to this place, but mostly to the basement level where they have this posh supermarket Mad & Vin that I'm a huge fan of (but I bet my wallet isn't). Tons of chocolate sellers as well there, so it's the perfect place if you're looking for chocolate gifts to give away (or if you change your mind later - to eat by yourself). Clothing selection is ok, but this is more of a mid-upper range of clothing. Lots of brands, but not the very posh ones, for that you need to head to Illum. They have basic "brands" as in Tommy Hilfiger, Karen Millen, Polo Ralph Lauren, BOSS and the likes. Another temptation is the housing decoration that is occupying the upper floor. I would go bankrupt if someone lets me wander too much there. So, I can't never go to Magasin on my own, I need a friend to drag me away from this floor. There are so many eye candies on this floor, be it kitchen appliances, kitchen utensils, dining room accessories or just housing decorations. If you bring me there, make sure I get out in time before I spend my entire bank account here. HELP! read more

I was lucky enough to visit this mega department store during Christmas time, while everything was so nicely decorated for the holidays. The store had about 6-7 floors of clothing, merchandise, and food and restaurants located on the bottom floor and very top floor. Obviously, being in Denmark, everything is already expensive as it is, but the store is probably a little bit more expensive than everything else! But, it's still definitely worth a visit to check it out! read more

Since this location is right in the middle of downtown and across from Nyhavn, it's packed with tourists and locals. The store itself is pretty big (5 floors) but it's still so crowded all the time. The layout is also a little too crammed for me - it seems like they're trying to fit too many sections in and you can't tell where some end and others begin. If you only want to go to one store and you need a variety of things (clothes, house stuff, etc) this is a good place to go since they do have it all. I particularly like their home section since it has so many Danish brands and there are usually some decent sales. There is a 10% discount for foreign shoppers here. I go here when I know what I'm looking for already, but I don't like going here to browse because it's pretty overwhelming. read more

Hit up your sugar daddy or cash in those dividend checks because you are going to go for a ride here. Your budget you ask?....the bigger the better, so you can have some fun putting lovely things in your shopping basket.....and there's lots of opportunity to do so here. I was there at a good time for their end of season sales, and they are good indeed. I found a 70% off rock star feather jacket which was the highlight of my trip, and some true Danish items for my friends and for my special friend, me. There a good selection of "made in Denmark" items but you still have to watch out for those China products (they snuck those in somehow) if this matters to you. There is a goodly selection of imported merchandise including American stuff. They love our fashion and they love our music. To keep you in the shopping mood they have a fantastic playlist. The colleagues (as they call each other) are all beautiful; as is everyone else in CPH.....oh, especially them mens. They do licorice, marzipan and chocolate superiorly well in Denmark and much is sold here; provide another separate budget for them as well, if you know what I mean. All this good stuff come at a good price. GOOD TIP: show them your ID and you receive 10% off. ALSO....have them give you the tax refund form. You take the form and your receipts to the airport and get your taxes that paid, refunded. It's really worth it especially if you are a serious "shopping spree" shopper since you won the lottery. The office for the refunds is right behind the 7-11 next to Norwegian Airlines. There are probably more offices in and around the airport...ASK. DO THIS before you check. There was no one in line after I marched on over there to get my money back...yes mam. I guess not too many people know this; well now you do. It adds up cause the taxes are up there. Be sure to save all (also from any store) your receipts for you purchases, NOT including museum tickets or traveling fares and restaurent ( I wish) bills. Magasin will consolidate your purchase receipts, tabulate them, so all you have to do is hand them over. PLEASE NOTE: you will have to give the original paperwork. Take photos of them on your phone and make sure your boss will accept photocopies on your expense report. For all your tax refund coinage returned (and my advice), I will gladly accept your lunch invitation and we can talk all about Denmak. I am fun: you will enjoy my company. Imposing from the outside, once inside it is nothing out of the ordinary. It would be comparable to a mid-level department store in the USA, such as a Macy's. The downstairs is much like a mid-town NYC grocery store with nothing special or of note (for something special, try the London department stores). There was a sale going on, so we did grab some Danish cookie tins for gifts to take back home. If in the busy area, stop in for a look see but don't go out of your way. read more
