In the other rooms, there were so many artifacts. Rooms within rooms and beyond, you can lose hours reading about everything on display.

This is a museum in South Wales which tells all about the colliery history in the area. In the same…read moremanner as The Big Pit, Rhondda Heritage Park strives to tell the story of local toil, plight and humanity through a delightful series of galleries and interactive exhibitions. Unlike The Big Pit, however, you cannot go down into the mines here, as they have long since been closed off. They do have a very convincing reenactment space though, and for those easily beguiled or young at heart, you might just believe you really are far underground. At the end of the tour there is a Simulation ride, where you are flung along cave tunnels in the back of a coal cart. This is, from what I remember of childhood visits, probably the highlight. The guide many years ago said that everyone begged to run the ride again, but they would never do it. Not even for the Queen, he said. (At 9, this shocked me.) Rhondda Heritage Park is a good place for a family afternoon out; particularly amusing if you're visiting with someone afraid of the dark.

I even have some dreams about the place as walk back along the small, grey rocks that lay on the flat and hard ground that seems to be near something like a train station or something. Then I just fade out of it, quickly... I remember feeling terrified at the thought of going underground and following the footsteps of what a minor would have used to have taken. We had a story and health instructions given to us before we entered the mine and the dark, cold and a narrow lift with one small light bulb lighting it up. We had to wear hard helmets with small, light bulbs blaring out from the top of you helmets. You can at first go and see The Visitor Centre, which has; an Art Gallery, a café on level one, a gift shop and a period village that has been re-constructed called Village Street. Entry to this heritage park is mostly free; if it is a special event day there then you have to pay to enter the place. I recommend this place to all, especially to children and their parents.

We were driving from Cardiff to London, and made a detour here (because it was on my list of places…read moreto visit). There is a very nice collection of artefacts from the time the legion was here. The building a rather small, but since there was barely a handful of visitors (rain might have played a part in that), there was no fear of bumping into other people. This museum is a treasure trove of Roman history, and the visit doesn't take long at all, maybe an hour.

Cosmeston Medieval Village is a fantastic place to visit with family and friends. The reconstructed village is in situated in Cosmeston Park, near their visitor centre and cafe, so you really can make the trip a whole day if you want to (I recommend wholeheartedly), but it can also only be a few hours. The tour takes you around a village, complete with barns, bakeries and roaming chickens. The guides are fun and informative, and there's a multitude of people all wearing bright Medieval garb. There is also, of course, a chance to dress up, if so required. This day is great fun and informative; a wonderful way to get kids and adults alike involved with history.

You wander around the 14th century Welsh village visiting different medieval houses and buildings, and encountering costumed people along the way, going about their daily routines - whether it's cooking, farming, or making crafts. In this way, you kind of step back in time and enter medieval village life. There are also a range of animals such as chickens, ducks and pigs that would have been kept in villages during that period. There are lots of special events taking place at the village throughout the year, too - from medieval fairs where you can buy crafts, play games, see falconry displays and have a go at archery, to Halloween at Cosmeston when you can experience the dark side of medieval life.

After the Norman conquest of England in the 11th century, William de Mohun built a castle on the site. The castle survived a siege during the early years of The Anarchy, which was a was a civil war in England and Normandy between 1135 and 1153. The castle was later bought by the Luttrell family. After Alexander Luttrell died in 1944, the family was unable to afford the death duties on his estate. The castle and surrounding lands were sold off to a property firm, but the family continued to live in the castle as tenants. The Luttrells bought back the castle in 1954, but in 1976 Colonel Walter Luttrell gave Dunster Castle and most of its contents to the National Trust, which operates it as a tourist attraction. The castle is beautifully furnished and when you walk to the top you will get a beautiful view of the countryside. Well worth your time to stop by and explore!
