If you're a visitor to Cardiff and you're intent on seeing the sights - The Wales Millennium Centre is a must - its is in the top 5. It's the closest Cardiff will get to the Syndey Opera House. It's exterior design has attracted a lot of attention not all of it favourable - I think its awesome. Try and get to see a show here as the warm wooden feel of Donald Gordon theatre houses all kinds of shows from musicals to, opera to stand up comedy. Having said that - its not the only reason to visit - there are several pleasant coffee shops / bars and the thing I love most - free performances in the coffee quarter area Glanfa (Waterside). You will often see (for example) a male voice choir performing here, which is quite a nice accompaniment to a warm frothy latte.

So this is the place for the arts in Wales, the big shiny Armadillo looking that looks a different colour every time you see it. Like all things built for the Millennium, this place wasn't cheap to build! It still has its sceptics, but I think its about time the land of song has a worthy home for all its talented performers. I also really like the fact you can snap up tickets to lots of performances from a tenner, making it accessible to everyone. If you want Opera, musicals, ballet or dance this is the place to be. I've also been here for gigs and comedy shows. What's pretty much guaranteed is that you'll a good seat wherever you sit; I even sat in a restricted view seat that really didn't seem very restricted to me. I would recommend getting a lift if you are up high unless your uber fit, and bringing your drinks and snacks with you if you are on a budget. It's also worth checking out during the day when there are often performances going on inside the lobby with everything from kids choir's to street dancing.

The Millennium Centre is a GORGEOUS venue in the heart of the bay. The outside often divides opinions and as my fellow yelper has already mentioned it's been called 'the armadillo' on more than one occasion but if you can get past the exterior and take a peek inside you'll be pleased with what you find. There's lots of wood, glass and spotlights so the whole place has a feeling of being bright, clean and open without feeling like it's sterile. I've been here a couple of times, once for the 'Britain's got talent' auditions and again for the photomarathon and It's certainly got versatility. As with venues like this though it's difficult to review the place without reviewing what you did or saw here but speaking purely on aesthetics and comfort it's a massive thumbs up from me.

I attended this venue recently to catch the 10th anniversary show for the Welsh Music Foundation. This was a free event but even then there were plenty of helpful staff around. It's really good to see a large local venue helping out without having to charge people for the privilege. Anyways, the Millenium Centre is something of a local landmark in Cardiff Bay now, and although resembling an armadillo (!) from certain angles, is nevertheless an impressive, eye-catching building playing host to musicals, stand-up comedians and the like. It's got plenty of scope for events of various sizes and has two theatres and various function rooms. There's also a huge foyer, with ample room for a full stage, which plays host to various shows, such as the one I attended. It's spacious inside, with a fully stocked bar in the corner. Be warned as it is quite pricey - £3.50 for a pint of San Miguel and £5.10 for a double JD and coke. The tickets vary greatly in price for varying events too. I've seen tickets for some comedians going for around the £40 mark, and other, equally well known comics selling their tickets for £20 so it does have the potential to overcharge, but not always. All in all I think this is a great, under-utilised venue around Cardiff (it's apparently constantly struggling to remain open) and is absolutely booming with free exhibitions, dance shows and the like, supporting the vibrant local arts community.

One of the top sites to visit is the unique looking Wales Millennium Centre. This top theatre is one of the most visited sites down Cardiff Bay and why shouldn't it be? It may look like its falling but don't worry that is part of the design and good luck translating those words on the front. I'm Welsh and I haven't a clue and I feel ashamed. I remember looking at the Wales Millennium Centre from the distance thinking it looked like a giant tortoise shell never really knowing what it was. Then I finally managed to visit and take in a few shows. The auditorium is a very modern looking area with any seat giving you a great view of the stage. It plays host to some of the best west end shows there are. It sold out of tickets within an hour for the performance of Les Miserables. It has had other great shows including Mary Poppins, Hairspray and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The next big show will be Mamma Mia. So I expect a lot of ladies warming up their vocal chords with the glorious sounds of Abba. Not only does it play shows but also because it's so popular it does have tours of the entire centre and giving its visitors plenty of information that they never knew. I would thoroughly recommend going to see a show at this wonderful venue. I would also recommend you try and get a good look at the artwork and photography that surrounds you, there are some inspirational pieces of art to be seen.

The line up is pretty varied, from ragtime bands and blues bands to acoustic trios and Latin jazz - featuring some incredibly talented musicians - and not all of them 'old blokes' as one reviewer says (I've seen plenty of groups including people in their 20s upwards, so it's a real mix). There's even a small dance floor where some people get up to shake their booty during some of the livelier gigs. Beyond the bar and slightly separated from it is the small restaurant area where you can still hear the band without it being as loud - so you can still enjoy a bit of conversation over supper. The staff here are very friendly and there can, on popular nights, be a great air of community spirit in the air. The church was originally built as a place of Lutheran worship, and was consecrated in 1868. It was built to serve the large number of Norwegian sailors coming into Cardiff's port at the time. The Norwegian Seamens' Mission was located here, and provided, as well as a place of worship, a place to find support and community for sailors away from home. In time, it also became the centre of a permanent expatriate Norwegian community. Perhaps its most famous member was Roald Dahl was baptised here, and worshipped with his family as a child. Sadly, the church's fortunes reflected those of the port as trade decreased in the post-war period, and it was closed and deconsecrated in 1974. The church was rescued and restored when the former port area was redeveloped in the 1980s. A preservation trust was established, and the church was dismantled and relocated in 1987 (the original site is now occupied by the Wales Millenium Centre). It was re-erected on the current site in 1992 and now hosts art exhibitions, concerts, acts as a venue for weddings, and there is a small cafe. The cafe serves a limited selection of snacks, sandwiches, toasted sandwiches and a range of cakes - coffee and cake seems to be its forte. We went for lunch there before a walk around the Bay - there are lovely views from the window tables across the Bay. We found the menu a bit limited: the toasted paninis come with cheese, or cheese and chutney, or cheese and ham, or... well, you get the picture. None comes with salad or vegetables (not even cheese and tomato). So we opted for the 3 choices above, accompanied by an olive, houmous and toasted bread platter, and a bowl of skin-on fries. It was good value, but let down by having standard sliced white bread with the platter (great olives, but sourdough would have been so much nicer!), and the toasties could have benefited from some side salad. A white bread toastie with just cheese feels a bit underwhelming in 2022. Service was similarly a bit underwhelming: pleasant and efficient enough - but only once we had gone to the counter and asked for a menu so we could make a selection. (No menus on the tables or menu boards.) You get the feeling they would be better concentrating on cakes and patisserie, with coffee: if they going to serve savoury food, a bit more attention to the menu would make a big difference. So, 5/5 for the historic building and location, 3/5 for the cafe (or stick to coffee and cake).

It still hosts the annual Welsh Proms aswell. My own experiences have all gone pretty smooth, with very little queuing and helpful, professional staff. I suppose it's good that there's nothing of note I can really say here, as the things that would tend to stick in your mind about something as general as a concert hall would in all likelihood have been bad experiences anyway. It's a top venue though and it's important to Cardiff as a city to have somewhere encouraging the arts and being constantly active in doing so.

I think that's because it was, when built, quite a modern design, and that design was not universal enough to quite stand the test of time. That being said, the selection of music, comedy, ballet and theatre in this venue is great. The theatre itself is vast, but seems much more intimate because of their carefully tiered seating. Seats encompass the stage, and there is a massive organ on display. Unfortunately, I've always found this venue to a little dampening to sound. Or the speakers aren't loud enough, or something.
