We ended up bringing half of it home. 250 pesos And, it's not just a pretty shell - it really is, I'm fairly certain, the best tortilla española I've ever had. It's packed with not quite set egg (optionally, you can ask for it well cooked through - they ask your preference when you order), perfectly cooked potatoes, peas, green onions, and cantimpalo sausage. We'd have both been happy just splitting that for lunch and calling it a day. Our waiter had very nicely let us know that all the portions are huge and that even just ordering the tortilla and one main course was likely more than we could finish. He was right - as I said, we took half the tortilla home, and this shellfish rice, unlike so many of them here that are all rice and a few scattered bits of shellfish, was jam packed with calamari, scallops, mussels, and shrimp. We ate a little over half of it as is, and then picked out all the rest of the shellfish. I guess we could have left it as is and brought half of it home too! 380 pesos. Overall, a really enjoyable place for lunch if you're out in Colegiales, and worth the trip if you're not. Very happily recommended.

Its architecture is actually very interesting, because these casa de comidas no lomger exist in Spain, so this like the Carmenère of the restaurant type. Its architecture and design is both super nice and dusty. The cafe part being the most refined of the establishment. The food is tasty and homey. Don't expect to be surprised. Not surprising is actually the goal here. The service is respectful and professional. A good experience everyone should have at one point.

Our third wasn't having either of these oddities, and opted for a plate of quite good smoked salmon with capers (280 pesos). Not so traditional, but tasty nonetheless. I was all set to order the place's famed rabo de toro, braised oxtail, which the waiter pimped for enthusiastically as the best dish on the menu, until I spotted that they had a special of the day of venison ravioli. He opined that they, too, were excellent, and in fact so good that the waiters and cooks were back in the kitchen sneaking extras whenever people ordered them. And, he was right - huge, plump ravioli filled with well spiced venison, in a creamy venison and mushroom reduction sauce. (270 pesos) Our salmon eater decided to stay with salmon, and went with nearly as good as the above, salmon filled squid-ink ravioli with fresh prawns, in a cream sauce. (390 pesos) And, our third, decided on the lechon, suckling pig, which was falling apart tender, and absolutely delicious. It could have used something to go with it - but this is old school, you have to order your side dishes separately. (320 pesos) It's not cheap, though not ridiculous - still, maybe a touch more than I'd expect in an old school bodegón, even with today's prices. Add in a cubierto charge (35 pesos each), a single shared bottle of water, a bottle of wine, and three coffees, and we racked up a 2285 peso tab, plus tip (we rounded to 850 pesos apiece), or about $66, $22 each, for 3 people. They do take credit and debit cards, a nice plus for this type of place, where many of them don't. And I do want to go back and try the oxtail!

The…read morestaff was super accommodating and helpful (we were tourists with a sub-par understanding of Spanish ) and they helped us navigate the menu and actually took the time to explain what things were that we were unfamiliar with. The seafood wontons were delicious, and my husband had the catch of the day with tacu tacu (a Peruvian dish that is rice, beans and spices) that was fantastic! I had the seafood spaghetti and it was delicious with a silky sauce that coated the noodles perfectly . The ceviche (Asian style) was the standout of the meal though-made with the catch of the day- it had sesame oil, chilis, and crushed peanuts on it , in a fresh citrus dressing. We loved our meal here! The piece sours are good too! Reservations are a must!

Everything else I eat was very disappointing. The causa.... Why call it a causa.... A causa it is not... And flavor wise was very lacking... Moving on to the pasta and breaded fish . The pasta was horrible. It was the first time in my life I couldn't finish pasta. On my book (as an Italian) it is sacrilegious to throw it away but that's what Happen and the fish was very bland and didn't tasted fresh at all. A shame I won't be coming back.
