Absolutely stunning outdoor cafe seating! Delicious Peruvian cuisine in a beautiful location. The staff was super accommodating and helpful (we were tourists with a sub-par understanding of Spanish ) and they helped us navigate the menu and actually took the time to explain what things were that we were unfamiliar with. The seafood wontons were delicious, and my husband had the catch of the day with tacu tacu (a Peruvian dish that is rice, beans and spices) that was fantastic! I had the seafood spaghetti and it was delicious with a silky sauce that coated the noodles perfectly . The ceviche (Asian style) was the standout of the meal though-made with the catch of the day- it had sesame oil, chilis, and crushed peanuts on it , in a fresh citrus dressing. We loved our meal here! The piece sours are good too! Reservations are a must! read more

Meh.... The place is beautiful and the staff is super attentive. And that kind of service is not usual in Argentina. The tiradito was delicious . Those are all the good things. Everything else I eat was very disappointing. The causa.... Why call it a causa.... A causa it is not... And flavor wise was very lacking... Moving on to the pasta and breaded fish . The pasta was horrible. It was the first time in my life I couldn't finish pasta. On my book (as an Italian) it is sacrilegious to throw it away but that's what Happen and the fish was very bland and didn't tasted fresh at all. A shame I won't be coming back. read more

You are started off w homemade Chips and two dips: rocoto and ocopa. Both excellent and the chips too. Ceviche Classico - is good. I rated it 3.75/5. Perhaps the le he at the bottom as too salty and it needed more heat and definitely garlic. The portion was good. The fish quality itself was excellent. Shenzi tiradito - I think that's what it was called. This was a solid 10/5. I would get three plates and call it a day. The sauce is slightly spicy, w tiny bits of garlic and onion and it has a good tang w the perfect amount of salt. The fish here looks like the same of the ceviche however, it is from a certain part of the fish because it melted like butter. This also had small slices of scallops which were excellent. As per usual, I tipped the plate and scooped all that delicious juice. Mint ginger lemonade - meh. I know, that one is on me...who gets mint ginger lemonade? Well, I have had it in a few places already and there was a spot that made it perfectly. To the point that it inspired me to make some when I get home and also...I proclaimed this year to be the year of mint. I'm going to use mint on everything. ANticucho corazón - skip. Little half potatoes are dry...and the anticucho itself was overcooked and the marinade of the anticucho was weak. Here's the thing, if I can make it better than I can be disappointed. It's just la our intensive to make at home. Causa de pollo is roughly 8" x 3" x 2.5"H. It's really good. As you know cause should have a layer of mashed and dressed potato and ofcourse this does. Your only complain may be that this causa is too soft and there are no texture contrasts. That's on you, so be warned, I thought it was great. Who doesn't love a dish presented w mini hard boiled quail eggs? So cute. Nigiri Nikkei ...three pieces of little mountain rice topped w a butterflied shrimp. This is another dish I would pig out on. It was excellent. We were two people and it was recommended, we ordered plenty. Which was true and it also meant I didn't have a second stomach to try an entree. So I don't know what I missed there. In conclusssion....their Nikkei and raw fish/ seafood game is STRONG here. So opt on those....a few of those....because it's excellent in flavors and quality read more

We came to Argentina in January for a wedding but were more excited for all the different kind of food we would be eating. We went online and found this restaurant as one of the best and it definitely was! We had a reservation for 7 people and we got seated right away outside in a perfect spot. The service was incredible and the food was 10x better. Everything we ordered was delicious from the different types of ceviche to the shrimps and octopus. If you like Peruvian food or seafood fusion then you must try Le Mar and cal in advance for a reservation. Outside seating is amazing so I suggest asking to be seated outside. Delicious food! We were 7 people and ordered many dishes to share, highly recommended. My favorites were the ceviches (especially the Nikkei), and the black rice. The tiraditos were also great. The only thing we didn't like was a big plate with fried seafood, it was kinda meh and nothing you couldn't get elsewhere, not worth it. Service was good except we asked 1000 times for the heater at the bar to be turned on and were ignored, and because it was chilly out, I got a fever the next day. Our table was next to the bar and they said people at the bar could complain about overheating. We were a big table so it was complicated to move. read more

This was the first restaurant we tried in Buenos Aires. It was completely empty when we arrived but it was packed when we left. If you don't plan on eating dinner early then I suggest getting a reservation. We had the mixed ceviche, a squid ink rice dish, and a fish dinner. Flavor wise everything was outstanding and so was the service. The ceviche was my favorite dish because I like strong vinegar bases. So if that isn't your thing do not get it. The rice dish was great but I wish it came in a smaller size. The waitress said it was for two people, but you could feed a family of 4 with it. Also the rice was slightly undercooked. I would definitely come back but on a super empty stomach because the portions are not small! read more

Dinner was excellent. Would definitely go back. We had the ceviche Classico, some ceviche-like platter with fresh fish and fried calamari, this amazing rice dish full of seafood with an omelette on top, and some sushi. The platter and the rice were definitely my favorites. Service was good. They were very patient with a complicated group check splitting situation. Also they made some vegetable ceviche-like thing for my vegan friend which was cool of them. I had to translate for my friends but they did have an English menu. Also the atmosphere was upscale and contemporary. The heaters outside did burn our faces off a little bit, but other than that the evening was flawless. read more

A cool and trendy restaurant. Had a ceviche with leche de tigre for starter, a lot of flavour and big pieces of fish. Had a selection of grilled seafood for main.. Was ok, but quite boring. Could be that the flavours in the starter outpowered the main.. But still not as I had hoped for. They saved a 4* rating with a delicious dessert made of a fried pancake( or something similar) with fresh fruits, dulce de leche and a scoop of banana ice cream. Their prices are quite high to be in BA, but their lunch menu during weekdays has more value for money and some lovely dishes they don't serve for dinner or in the weekends. I don't eat a lot of fish in Buenos Aires but this is a new favorite. I have only been once and tried the ceviche tasting, all very good but the classic is my favorite. The fish is very fresh but the pieces a little big for my taste. The flavor is spot on in all three ceviches but the asian is a little sweet. We also try the tiraditos, raw shrimp in a very tasty dressing. For desert we share a love of northerners, beautiful and excellent tasting chocolate mousse with crocante toppings. The area inside is nice but outside is also good as long as it's not to cold and you sit close to a heater. The staff very friendly and helpful, we get a table outside so we can finish the meal with a cigar and coffee without trouble. Update: after eating at la mar 10 plus times and tried more of the dishes it's still one of my favorite fish restaurants but it is not perfect. The best ceviche is the classic but it is missing the toasted corn and the pieces of fish are a tad big. The gran jalea is a nice plate to share if you like fried seafood. The langostines with corn salsa are fresh and delicate but a bit bland for my taste. Service is usually very good, not michelin service but friendly and pretty fast. read more

Bad service. They seemed to be very understaffed, food took about 3 hours to get there. Literally, 3 hours. Forgot many items, drinks, chips for the ceviche. Just not very indicative of Gaston's other restaurants, specially the ones in Peru. Bathrooms in pretty bad condition. Oh and no one answers the phone. The worst part was the wait, and just knowing that if we were going to order something else, you were looking at a 45 minute wait ... AT LEAST! Hope they step it up, or that I just went on a bad day but I felt compelled to tell all the people who would be expecting a Peru experience, that it wasn't even close. read more

We stumbled across this place tonight and were drawn in by the outdoor seating, heat lamps and lively vibe. The meal was delicious and the cleanest, healthiest meal we have had in Buenos Aires. We figured this restaurant was popular and might not get in but we took our chances on a Thursday night. Our host was gracious and advised that even though they were booked and had no tables they would allow us to dine at the bar. That was good enough for me so they sat us down. The wait staff was attentive and we had front row seats to the kitchen staff. I ordered the degustación de cebiche which is sort of a sampler of the different cebiches they offer. My wife ordered a lomo saltado simply because she is not a fan of seafood but everything else sounded so good that she could not decide thus she decided on a classic. I've been to many Peruvian restaurants all over including Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Tokyo, and of course Peru itself (Lima, Cuzco, and Iquitos). Bar none the best ceviche I had was in Lima with a well deserved 2nd place being Tokyo. Right off the bat the bar was set high based on this. Let's just say that Lima will always have the best cebiche but this place wowed me beyond belief. The cebiche was so fresh and the leche de tigre was divine. I could just drink this by the cupful all day long. This is especially impressive considering Buenos Aires isn't exactly known for fresh seafood. I'm also pleased that the experiments with seafood and cebiche that this restaurant is doing with its menu is not betraying what cebiche is about but rather complimenting it. For example there are dishes on the menu that simply expand on the connection to Japanese and Asian cuisines that already exists in Peruvian food and they do it in a very pleasing way. The classic lomo saltado is a little bit saucier and different from other Peruvian restaurants but this certainly works. The flavor is never betrayed and each individual component gets its chance to shine. It's a busy place so I recommend reservations a few days before. The staff is friendly and efficient. If you come to Buenos Aires and need your cebiche fix, you can't go wrong and you will absolutely not regret it. read more

Lunch at La Mar which was recommended by my host Eugenia. As the name suggests it specializes in seafood, more specifically ceviches (eight different varieties) and Nikkei (a sort of South American/Japanese fusion cuisine). It's a very elegant space with zebra striped floor tiles, blue banquettes along the wall beneath high arched windows, and industrial style metal piping suspended from the ceiling. I was really trying for an alcohol free day today, but found something on the beer menu called Quilmes Stout which at 70 pesos was actually cheaper than a soft drink. The place was almost full when I arrived around 1.30 so I was lucky to get a seat at the bar. A nice gentleman offered to translate the menu for me then suggested he put together a few dishes for me including a ceviche, a tiraditos (like a ceviche but made with slices of sashimi instead of diced fish) and shrimp cooked in butter and garlic. If I was still hungry after that we could just keep going. The guy also suggested I try the national drink, Pisco. I'm in your hands buddy Quilmes Stout is made in Argentina (the locals call stout Cerveza Negra - black beer) and it is possibly the best I've ever had; very creamy and without the tartness that you find in varieties like Guinness. A little metal bucket of potato crisps arrived with my drink accompanied by two small wooden bowls of dipping dipping sauce. These were the color of Dijon and Hot English mustards respectively, and quite spicy - the "Dijon" noticeably more so. My first course arrived - ceviche Miraflores - made with fish, prawns, octopus and red onion in a sauce of tiger milk. Very spicy, very fresh. Just gorgeous. Second course was the Tiraditos Doble - lenguado con dos creams: de rocoto y de tres ajies. The sashimi slices were laid around the plate like the petals of a huge flower with the sauce between and underneath them. Another winner. The fish was light but flavoursome, the sauces like two types of spicy mayo. I'd finished my Quilmes so ordered a cocktail called a Chilcano made with Pisco, lemon, ginger ale and angostura bitters. The waitress warned me in broken English that this was strong. Yep. I was quite full by now and was secretly hoping that they'd forgotten about the prawns. As it turned out I'm glad they didn't. Juicy and generous in a light buttery garlic sauce, the four prawns were served with the head and on a bed of some type of baked potato-like vegetable (like, maybe potato?). The bill cane to a total of just over a 1,000 pesos - around $90AUD. Considering I paid 1,300 pesos for yesterday's floating feast fiasco I consider it a bargain. La Mar is a great restaurant with lovely ambience, fast and friendly service (most of the staff didn't speak English but tried politely to explain to me what it was I was actually eating instead of just dropping it on the table which I would have done) and wonderful food. This is a pretty restaurant, and the food is great, though service can be slow. Be sure to study your bill carefully, however. On our last trip, we discovered we'd been billed 600 pesos for a whisky sour, which we hadn't ordered (we had a bottle of wine). When we brought it to their attention, they removed it. But I spoke with an Argentine friend who said this restaurant does this a lot, especially with unsuspecting foreigners. A series of events, not scoring high on the positive. I cannot complain about the food, per se. I have not been to Peru yet. The oyster dish was explained as 4 very large oysters with chopped onion, peppers, etc. Was delicious. However there was only 1 large oyster, the other 3 were so small I almost missed them all together. The langoustine dish was also very nice with the marinade and pepper varieties. So how did this turn sour. Apparently the first dish leaked or spilled with out my knowing. After I rested my arms on the placemat, my sleeves became soaking wet. At that point I had to leave without ordering my anticipated 3rd item. I asked for the check, right away I noticed I was charged 80 pesos for 2 cover charges, though dining alone. while beautiful from the street, this restaurant was a big disappointment. we sat outside, but against the wall where it was quite hot. the side of the table against the building featured very uncomfortable seating. five of us were crammed into two small tables that had been put together, so the three of us against the wall were straddling table legs. it took forever for our water to arrive (and our wine didn't arrive till after the dinners did). the calamari on the mixed seafood plate we began with was chewy. two of us had trucha/trout, which should be tender and subtle, but was overcooked and overly and unpleasantly spiced. my daughter had the milanesa, which was made without salt, and therefore, flavor. the only dish worth eating was a ceviche. we had to ask twice for everything else we needed (an extra plate, more water, ice), which was aggravating at such a "nice" restaurant. the desserts, by contrast, were very good, but one would expect that a pricy seafood restaurant would tirelessly focus on getting that right above all else. don't waste your money unless all you care about is being seen in a trendy place. read more
