While traveling for business, I always try to find an affordable yoga studio for a few classes. The drop in rate at Maha was $9 and that was by far the best price in the area. A mat rental was $2. I took the general yoga hour class. The instructor was a substitute, so I didn't get her name, but she was lovely! Her music complemented the flow. The city views and sounds from inside the studio were also lovely. Maha is inside a multi-level building and there's no marking for it at street level. I walked back and forth a few times trying to find the studio. I actually stumbled into the correct building planning to ask for better directions. read more

I have always had a high regard for studios as clean and well kept as Maha, and one that equally keeps itself clean and professional in terms of transparency about memberships, pricing, etc. However, I will NEVER return to this studio after being basically body shamed by one of the instructors. To put a long story short, this person pointed out to me that my body type was making other people at the studio say negative things to her in passing...and the way this was said made me feel singled out, like it was "my fault" that this was happening. If I had been the instructor, and if I had any ounce of common sense, I would have never even brought this up in a teacher/client conversation. But this was so disrespectful and unprofessional of the instructor that I could not continue to support them by attending classes. Especially in a yoga studio setting...why would you EVER shame someone for their physical appearance? Practitioners, all I can say is...beware. read more

Maha Yoga is like home for me. Their alignment based approach saved me after a back injury and allowed me to continue my beloved practice of yoga. It is a place where everyone is welcome and included in a respectful and warm environment. The instructors are knowledgeable, give great alignment tips and adjustments suggestions during class and really tailor most classes for all levels and abilities. I had moved away last year and when I came back to Philly the first thing I did was retake my membership. I had missed Maha greatly during my absence! read more

I joined Maha Yoga during the pandemic as a way to ensure that I would get in some regular movement and it was one of the better choices I've made in my life! My body is so beat up from grappling, which is my primary hobby, and I credit consistent yoga to helping me stay injury-free. I am particularly fond of Suzanne's classes, which are on the gentle side and friendly to all levels. She mixes in a lot of dynamic movement rather than static poses, and her classes are always different. You can tell she puts a lot of thought into working off a theme and building up to a more advanced pose. read more

I wanted to hate Maha, because I thought I could only love one yoga studio, and I thought I'd found my studio soul-mate a few blocks away (I'm sorry, [Studio] don't hate me). But then I had an (m)aha moment, and realized you can love more than one yoga studio. Turns out, I'm the Big Love-r of the Philly yoga scene. Today was the last day of my livingsocial unlimited month at Maha, and I went almost every day for a month. I was pretty sad today, as I did some downward dogs led by my favorite instructor (Teagan) to the musical stylings of various 80's bands (her music of the week picks are...awesome--90's boy bands was my fave). Great space (it's nice when the instructors tell you to face the gorgeous church instead of face the back wall). Amazing instructors (Favorites include: Andrea, Jake, Jean-Jacques). Owners are awesome too, super nice. The yogahour classes (only $7) are a workout. Don't underestimate their ability to pack arm balances and inversions, and all that other good stuff in a short period. The hour and a half classes are great too, slower, but more in depth instruction, more one on one time with the instructor to really perfect that crazy thing you've been wanting to try. Don't be intimidated by the advanced class, (you can do it!) and don't lift your nose at the basics class (you'll still get a good workout!). A lot of the instructors start with a word or thought of the day which is great, super unpretentious, just thought-provoking, and maybe a few oms. Bonus points for all the events they have: Whoever came up with "Brewmaha" (yoga +beer tasting), I commend you. Teagan also has a cooking and yoga event coming up cus ya know, she's a Paris-trained chef (normal). Some caveats: their schedule is a bit limited: mostly a 10, 12, 5, 6:15 schedule, with a few others. Also, their longer classes are more anusara based, not flow/vinyasa, so you may not get super power yoga sweaty, but you will build strength. Will be back and highly highly recommend! read more

Maha used to be one of the best yoga studios in the city, but after the pandemic, things have changed a bit and you won't get the old vinyasa flow you used to love so much. She's changed the sign, even, to indicate that what they are teaching is more specific to chronic back pain, etc. She had to move her studio from a beautiful, large open space with a second smaller space, to sitting above improv theater groups and next door to sham balah meditation--a group that's been on the third floor or so of the Adrienne Theatre forever. In a way, the pandemic might have forced studio owners to adjust and if you fell in love with 75- to 90-minute vinyasa flow with ALL of the standard poses, or the power hour of yesteryear, you won't be satisfied. Though there are a few very likable instructors. Philadelphia has sort of become a mockery, shall I say. Or, it seems the powers that be are mocking yoga and the golden era of a beautiful practice has long since passed. lokah samustah sukhino bahvantu, may all beings be happy and free and may I contribute to the happiness of all beings. 5 years later, and I still love this place for all the same reasons and a few more. I love their community classes at 4:30 M-Th. ($5 and up!) Jess, who teaches on Thursdays is amazing! The workshops are great. They offer weekend workshops but have a weeknight series too! They do some great tennis ball work (awesome myofascial release workshops with Teagan.) They hurt so good. They have yoga hour classes for $9 everyday. read more

What better way to close out the year 2015 but with a challenging yet relaxing yoga class here in the heart of Philly. On the last day of the year 2015, I decided to take a morning 10AM yoga class here with Joan. Since I was only visiting Philly, I opted for a drop-in class ($16). I did not know that if I checked in on Yelp, I could've saved $1 on the class, but it's no big deal. I'll just save the coupon for the next time I stop on through here. Joan was a great instructor. She was very friendly and made me feel at home immediately. She also took the time to ask if I had a regular practice and in what style. I did mention to her that I do enjoy a vigorous Vinyasa class. Joan was very informative and explained to me that she likes to focus on proper alignment in her class and I was pretty excited to hear that. After practising yoga now for about a decade, my practise has become more about proper alignment, but with that said, I still enjoy a good sweat too. Joan did not go easy on us and she definitely made us all work, but I really appreciated her instruction and also hands-on adjustments when needed. She held the poses for longer, but I really appreciated the hip openers, psoas stretches, and excellent instruction. There is something to be said about finding a yoga studio that works with your personality. And that can also change as you evolve in your practise. Keep your mind open, and allow the teachers to help you find your inner peace, but also help guide you to the proper alignment so you avoid injury down the road. Most yoga teachers correct you not to embarrass you but mainly to help you develop a more advanced practice. I highly recommend Joan if you're a beginner, but also if your more advanced. She is able to adjust her teaching for all levels in the class. This was a great way to end the year. I can't think of anything better than a yoga class to round out the year. So, being new to Philly (or any state) since I move quite often, is really hard. Nothing has been able to compare to my dear old Ptown yoga pad. This is pretty darn close though. I'm not big on going up 6 flights to a yoga studio, but the entry way is nice and stacked below are my pilates studio and my fav eyebrow waxer! This studio really has a great serenity about it, as many yoga studios should have. There are two rooms. I saw the small one, City Mouse, and it looks small, but wasn't a packed house. I practiced in the larger studio, Studio Elephant, and it was really clean, new/ nice wood, just really well maintained. The views are pretty great as well, not that i'm looking out during my practice. Gazing.... The teachers do have an Anusara background, and I need a mixture of all types of yoga. Taken one class w/ Zhenja, and she was really skillful about alignment, arm balances, inversions included. My biggest pet peave is a class that takes you at a slow steady pace, but doesn't seem challenging. Zhenja hit the spot for BOTH beginners and more advance practioners - and it is a fine balance. I do really have those days where I need a Power Vinyasa or Astanga class, and others where I need to rebalance my alignment in Anusara (because this hurts or that hurts....or I don't feel like washing sweat out of my hair). The best part about Zhenja's class is it really felt medicinal, body was warm throughout the class, was provided adjustments as needed. I really do like that they have 1 hour sessions, 1 hour 15 min. (which are hard to come by these days) and just a few 1.5 hours sprinkled in. After work, i'm excused and the last thing I want to do is stumble out of a studio at 8pm of City Center to get home, so there are a plentiful of options for you. My next tries: Justicia and the intermediate weekend class The filters: - A filtered water fountain (again a must) - changing rooms - restrooms - well decorated - clean - no showers - $7 yoga hour classes - $20 for 3 class intro offer - plenty of props - friendly receptionist - they charge a dollar more if you pay with CC (interesting concept yet sort of deceiving.) - yoga hour- don't expect anything fancy, no inversions. Minimal arm balances. read more

My friend and I decided to spend the summer doing something different every Friday night. A concert, a yoga class at a new studio, a concert, whatever as long as it is different from the Friday before. We decided on Maha Yoga because they offer a class later on Friday and as we both work, it was right for our schedules. What a beautiful space. From the second you get off the elevators the vibrations in here are awesome. Soothing, peaceful, calm and nurturing. It's pretty in every direction. Heck - even the bathroom is nice. The young man who greeted us was so friendly and sweet, I just felt the work week melt away and disappear as Friday night ushered in the weekend. The girl who taught the class was a sub, not the instructor we were planning on and she was brand new out of teacher training. She will need a few more classes under her belt to find her voice and her true self as a teacher, but she had the basics and it is truly up to the yogi to take what they need from each pose. I don't live in the area so I can't say I will be coming back regularly. But I would pop in for a class if I had a free night and was planning on hanging in the city. Love the vibes. read more

Very disappointing experience. I have been going there for years and loved Teagan and "yoga hour." The owner told me that Teagan was like family and that she was keeping the "yoga hours" so I paid for a full year. Two weeks later the owner got rid of all "yoga hour" classes and Teagan is no longer teaching there (not by choice I am told). The owner flat out lied to me and knew there was no way I would have paid almost a thousand dollars upfront for the year if she told me the truth which she knew when she took my money. This studio used to be my go-to when I was in town. Yogahour with Jake was $8 which was a friggin' bargain. Then they bumped it up to $9 which was still undercharging us IMO. Funny enough, I always thought they should raise the prices...and then they did. 144%. Now the yogahour is gone and the regular drop-in is $22!!! Even the ten-class pass is 30-40% more expensive than comparable locations. I really like it here but I can't justify the costs and my schedule isn't conducive to a monthly membership (which could potentially bring it down to $15/class); I think I may have to pass for now. Hopefully the feedback will get them to reduce prices so I can come back! read more

Maha yoga is the first yoga studio I have ever taking classes at and I am so happy they offer amazing beginner classes. I was a little intimidated attending yoga for the first time but everyone was so nice including the instructor Julie. The class can be moderately challenging if you don't have great upper body strength or flexibility but overtime those things are sure to improve. Though I have only been to 3 of the beginner classes, I have already seen a lot of progress in my strength and balance. If you are looking for yoga classes that aren't l just a workout but incorporate mind and body alignment as a priority, than Maha is a great studio to choose. read more

Great yoga studio! I love the feel of the space, it's very open and welcoming. I've taken several classes with Alan, restoratives and basics, and the basics class is a great one for me, since I'm familiar and comfortable with yoga, but not as experienced. Maha also has cards available that you can place by your mat which let's the instructor know if your ok with them physically touching you to help you through a pose. I'm very anxious and dislike strangers touching me, and I hadn't even realized that was something I felt uncomfortable with regarding going to classes elsewhere. It's a very low pressure option, as I don't have to explain myself to anyone if I don't want to. read more

Maha is a great addition to Philly's yoga scene. A bright, beautiful space, with a cool view of the First Baptist Church to boot. I may be biased, but Teagan is one of my favorite teachers. I used to take her classes at Philly Power Yoga, and her classes are always fun, light-hearted, and challenging. I haven't practiced with any of the other teachers at Maha, but have heard nothing but good things about Justicia and Shawn. Even though the studio isn't heated, you really get a heck of a work out and will end up sweaty and feeling great. Class prices are comparable to other studios in the area. My SIL recommended Maha a while ago, but I'd already found my yoga home at Yoga Garden & it's a little far to walk on a work day in the winter, so I never got around to going there until today. Beautiful space. Well organized, cubbies for shoes right when you walk in, safe supervised cubbies for purses in the lobby so everyone's cell phones are outside of the room far, far away (all yoga studios everywhere need to take a lesson here!)...even the bathroom was beautiful. Wow, all that & I haven't even gotten to the practice space yet! Also beautiful. Windows, lots of light, views, it was a beautiful afternoon so some windows were open & there was a nice breeze. Bliss. I've only practiced with one teacher here (Jake), so my 5-stars is really based mostly on the space itself, but if all of the teachers are of Jake's level of quality (and if the other reviews are to be believed, which, of course they are...who can I trust if I can't trust Yelpers?), then you are going to be in good hands in any class you take. I had to work hard in Jake's class, but it was still fun and light-hearted. Highly recommend. I don't expect to be at Maha often: like I said, Yoga Garden is my yoga home, but I will definitely be here again. read more

Went for a couples yoga class during Valentine's Day weekend, $50 for early bird. Class was a little more than two hours long. First hour was yoga where we did basic couple poses. I was surprised on how many couple poses we did and everything was a beginner level so everyone could easily do all the poses. Second hour, we learned and gave our significant other Thai massages. Instructor John Jacque was very helpful throughout the whole workshop, made the class very enjoyable even for non yogis. Overall, learned so much and the class definitely made you more connected to your significant other, which was perfect for a Valentine's Day activity. The only reason why I gave 4 stars instead of 5 was because the space was not large enough for the amount of people. The Valentine's workshop must be really popular because there were probably more than 20 couples in the room. The room is a decent size but there was just too many people and I felt like the couples were too close to one another. I liked that the room was well lit and the studio was pretty nice. The whole place feels really cozy and open. read more

Here's my gist: Where the heck is it? (space notes) It's really nice space in an amazing location (17th and Sansom -- you get to it on Sansom, btw). They just added a second practice room, so a nice amount of space It can get hot, but I've heard some people like that It can get crowded, probably contributing to the hotness. Probably a testament to their popularity! What are they up to? (style notes) The studio seems to have a general vinyasa style, and a very positive teaching style (dig it). There's not many modifications offered, so just do your own thing if you have an injury that you're knowledgable about, or tell the teacher beforehand if you're a beginner or have some issues you're not sure how to modify for. Other notes: $2 for mat rental (that's the standard Rittenhouse rate, I guess), otherwise the prices are pretty great, plenty of storage space for your jawn before class, and there's a nice amount of natural light coming in. I'd recommend it as a yoga studio for someone in the area who likes the style, and for sure it's definitely worth a try. I might not recommend it for beginners or people with injuries, but if it's the difference between going to class and not, GO! read more

This is by far the best yoga studio I've ever been to. At first I didn't like it because *some* classes aren't as fast paced as others. But all of the teachers here really focus on posture and doing better with your practice. I've improved so much since going to Maha. Each teacher has his or her own strengths, and experimenting with when you go is how you'll find the best fit for you. I like Chea for her partner work and overall stellar classes. Teagan or Allison are who you want to see if you need a killer workout. Jean-Jacques will help you feel comfortable with acroyoga even if you're new to it - and his classes really focus on positivity. I love that Maha incorporates some philosophy into each session. That really helps you set an intention for your practice that day. I also think they do social media well - if you're not following them on Instagram, you should since they do some contests for free classes or gear. I really owe a lot to Maha. I moved so I am no longer to attend, but I doubt I'll find a studio I love as much. They really helped me fall in love with yoga and improve so much over the last year. Let me preface this by saying Maha was my first real yoga experience, but it set the bar high to say the least. The studio is on the 6th floor of 1700 Sansom St, and the elevator opens right into a relaxing and comfortable environment. I've already taken classes with Liz, Justicia and Jean Jacques and they've all taught me something different, not to mention solid playlists - not entirely too zen. As a student the most attractive thing about Maha is the pricing. Open classes cost $7 on a drop in rate and they even have community classes where it's up to you to donate (they recommend $5-$10). I'll have to try a few other studios before I change to 5 stars, but right now Maha does the trick nicely! read more

Coming to Maha makes my stress dissipate, and not just from the amazing workout I get during class. There's something serene about this studio, which is probably why I love it. I purchased an unlimited monthly deal back in August, which makes yoga super affordable for me. In November, they added another studio, which makes for many more class options. While all of the instructors are great, I always try and make it to Justicia's Saturday open class. She is a phenomenal teacher and is patient, especially with people like me, who just started practicing a few years ago, after many, many years of running (and literally NO stretching!) I can see small improvements in my practice, which I deem as major victories. I look forward to coming to yoga, whereas I used to see it as a chore; I have Maha to thank for that :) read more

If one end of the yoga spectrum is rain sticks and hippie shit with lots of meditation and the other end is basic barre classes/Pilates/intense power shit, Maha leans towards hippie. I like Maha because it's low key and has diverse teachers and students. I went to community yoga with Valentina and basics with Chae. Both classes helped me feel physically stronger and psychologically pepped up. It's vinyasa-alignment hybrid with some fun twists. They inconsistently charge to rent mats. It would get five stars if it offered more restorative/yin, and if it had earlier morning classes. read more

Highly Recommended! This a great studio!! Everyone is friendly and super helpful. The space is beautiful. The main studio is very spacious compared to other studios and has a nice view. I always find the temperature to be perfect. The teachers are fantastic. They are always thorough when they direct classes so you never feel lost. They are very helpful with adjustments and helping to push you to try new positions without feeling intimidated. The Yogahour classes are my favorites. Only $7 for a great workout. I did a drop in class for a friend's birthday (she goes all the time) and found it to be a lot of fun! Teagan was a great instructor and I was able to follow along for the most part even though I have only taken a few yoga classes before. The room definitely filled up quickly and there were A LOT of us in there. I was dripping sweat--next time I will most definitely bring a towel. it was definitely a fun time and nice to hear other people grunting and laughing along at some difficult moves. they are working on a new room, so I'll be interested in if that means more classes, smaller classes, or both! they prefer cash and you get a discount if you sign up for class packages and pay cash. read more

I love this "kula". I practiced at a few other studios - primarily with one instructor for a year, and then another for five years. After six years of following two instructors across town, the instructors' schedule no longer worked for me. After a brief hiatus, I decided to give Maha a try. I love it. I took my first yogahour class with Teagan last night and I'm totally HOOKED. For only $7 ($8 with a credit card) I got one heck of a workout and an amazing experience. Teagan is truly great at what she does- she explains what you should be feeling with each pose and she's incredibly accurate with it. The class is set to upbeat music but still retains a peaceful quality. You know it's a good workout when you're sore in muscles you didn't know existed. The studio itself is very centrally located and has an incredibly tranquil quality once you arrive. There are cubbies and changing rooms, and Annie (at the front desk) said they even have a reasonable yoga mat storage agreement if you don't want to schlep it back and forth. You can also rent mats for $2. read more

Went to my first yoga class this weekend. Just finished pt at Rothman for lower back issues, suggested yoga. Shopped around a bit, newbie offer from Maha was great, 8 classes for $35. Hard to beat even if I went once or twice and wasn't into it. Had Julie as the instructor. She was great with me since I've never done this before and have the back issues. Also thought I might be amongst all women but it was 4 guys and 4 gals in the class so nice mix. I'm a fan and will be going back. read more

Have had many wonderful yoga experiences over the years. Some brought me to literal tears (i'm a wee bit dramatic) and others challenged me physically and mentally. From Beginner to more advanced I've always really, really been grateful for the grace and humbleness that comes from the teachers, and the thorough instructions. I have always felt very welcome to the community there as I am not always able to attend classes. Recently, given what has been going on in the world, they have switched over to online classes to do at home in accordance with social distancing. The Zoom app and the instructions on how to get to the online class were clear as day and the class itself was really invigorating. I would suggest doing a gift card so that you can experience the joy of Maha and support them now for whenever we get the studio and staff's presence back, physically, but also so you can enjoy the beautiful practice and teachings at home. I attended Teagan's yoga hour class last night. First of all, it's a bargain at $7 for drop in, and second of all - what a great workout! The hour flew by. The yoga hour classes are at a faster pace, but Teagan really focuses on alignment and will talk you through adjustments that are commonly needed in each pose. She also offers modifications to make poses easier or more challenging, depending on your skill level. A great all levels class that I will definitely attend again! read more

I have been to a few classes at Maha and all of the teachers have been wonderful. The quality of teaching there IMO has been very consistent to Alignment Yoga. Our regular class is with Amanda on Sunday mornings. We even travel in from the burbs for this one. Amanda is an absolutely outstanding teacher. This is a basics class but she adjusts it based on the participants. Her teaching is clear and cues are very helpful. She develops a connection with each student and created such a strong following that the class had to be moved to the big studio. I highly recommend Amanda to all. read more

I love the teachers at Maha! Every one of them is a little different, but I love that I can go to all of them and still get what I need. I have learned so much more than I ever expected, not only about yoga but also about my body in the time that I have been going to their classes. It is nice that you can just show up and they are always willing to make room for you. No need to sign up days before to secure a spot. They have changing rooms and all the required props available if you need them. They have very thorough classes that go for 75 minutes (my favorite!) but also shorter ones for those that want to get some practice in but can't spare that much time. This is my happy place in Philadelphia. The studio is airy and bright. Everyone that works here is very nice and excited about improving your practice. I love the classes as they aren't the typical vinyasa flow classes but instead each class (except the yogahour class from what i understand) works towards a peak pose, leading to a different experience every time you go which I enjoy.
